Apex Legends Mobile has failed to generate the kind of revenue EA were hoping for, and it will therefore be closed down later this year.
Did you ever try Apex Legends Mobile? It was a great demonstration of how good mobile gaming could be. And, if you used a controller, it really didn't feel that far away from the experience the console and PC version of Apex offers.
It certainly launched with great success, and was topping the charts in both the App Store and the Google Play Store. But, much like Smaug from The Hobbit, EA's greed can never be sated, no matter how much gold and how many trinkets they hoard.
Apex Legends Mobile Closing Down In May
As officially confirmed by the devs, Apex Legends Mobile will be shutting down on May 1, 2023, at 4pm PT (7pm ET / 12am GMT). And before you ask, they won't be issuing any refunds for purchases made in-game: "We will not be providing refunds for real money purchases, per the terms of the EA User Agreement." Even for EA that feels pretty scummy.
So, why did it close down? Well, you can probably guess. Per mobilegamer.biz:
Monthly earnings hit $7m in May and June 2022, but have since declined to around half that. October, November and December revenue came to $3.6m, $2.9m and $3.5m respectively. January is tracking to reach just over $1.4m, a steep decline and an all-time low.
Earnings have been down every week since the start of the year. The last four weeks’ revenue has been $485k, $389k, $299k and $161k last week.
It's as simple as that. They might be making hundreds of thousands a week, but those are rookie-numbers to the creators of FUT.
How about some positive news for you Apex fans to end on? The console and PC version of Apex is still going strong, with Season 16 launching very soon (and if you want every advantage going into the new season, you can pick up a pro-controller here).
