With the latest season just picking up, now is a good time to look back. Which have been the best seasons of Fortnite: Battle Royale?

Fortnite is now in its 12th season. And while we love to obsess over the newest spy-themed cosmetics or the latest development to the map, it’s good to remember where the game has come from. Here is our perfectly subjective ranking of the top 5 seasons that Fortnite has had.

5. Fortnite Season 4

Close encounters, indeed. (Image credit: Epic Games)

The start of Season 4 saw a lot of changes on the map, from Dusty Depot becoming Dusty Divot after a close encounter of the meteor kind to an evil villain base near Snobby Shores. The game also got several important bits of content.

While some like the jetpacks or the drum gun were loudly (and somewhat justifiably) disliked, shopping carts and bouncers brought a lot of fun to anyone jumping from the Battle Bus. It might not have been the best of times, but it was certainly good times.

4. Fortnite Season 1

Way back, a long time ago, when Fortnite was just starting to find its feet, things were quite different. Many of the things we now take for granted were nowhere to be seen. However, there was the excitement of something new and different.

Just the building we now take for granted filled many players with glee… as well as shooting someone who built a stairway to heaven and watching them take a long fall.

3. Fortnite Season 5

This was a season with a lot of experimentation with the game, and while Epic Games did not always deliver hits, enough of them were good to count as a pretty fun time in our books. The developments on the map made it one of the most memorable ever, with more and more valid landing spots for players who wanted some variety.

Gadgets like the Rift-to-go or the Shockwave grenade made for a lot of mobility and fast-paced action, and the introduction of limited-time modes made even jaded cynics feel the rush of something fresh. Meanwhile, the pro scene heated up, with Epic starting the Summer Skirmish circuit with $8 million in rewards distributed over two months of events.

We could have done without the guided missile and a few others, but on the whole, it was a pretty good time.

2. Fortnite Season 2

This was the time that Fortnite was already starting to get steam and when the game we now know was truly born. We saw the introduction to the now-ubiquitous battle pass that enabled players to earn more rewards the more they played.

Furthermore, Season 2 marked the entrance of several highly-visible players in the game who upped the level for everyone watching their videos and wanting to become the next big thing.

Even the map had its fair share of updates, like the introduction of Snobby Shores and Tilted Towers. Season 2 was a classic.

1. Fortnite Season 3

Okay, call us old-fashioned – we did choose the first five seasons as best, after all. However, we will not be persuaded that Season 3 was anything less than peak Fortnite.

The game saw massive growth, with the rise of superstars like Ali “Myth” Kabbani or Tyler “Ninja” Blevins. We Fortnite game develop and strategies reached full potential. We saw Ninja play with Drake and make Fortnite a mainstream hit. We even saw players get freaked out about the rumors of an incoming apocalypse … and the “birth” of major end-of-seasons events when the meteor crashed into Dusty Depot.

Honorable mentions

That is not to mean there weren’t plenty of fun changes later, of course. Season 8 brought us a pretty sweet new biome and a ton of piratical goodness – as well as a volcano, which is never a bad thing for dramatic one-on-ones.

Season 6 saw a much-changed map and a great storyline (especially if you liked Fortnitemares). Even the last season gave the game a nice refresh with a lot of changes improving the map, balancing the loot and introducing new mechanics. Yet in the end, the first five seasons were classic.
