Twitch Adds a Transgender Tag

Twitch transgender tag

Twitch is the biggest streaming platform and now it's also the most inclusive. Today Twitch officially added numerous tags to the platform, including "transgender", "black", "disabled" and "bisexual".

The purple platform has been making some serious changes in the past month. Twitch is already working on a rework of the subscriptions depending on your location and the hot tub meta got changed. Now hundreds of new tags are available on the platform including "transgender", "black", "disabled" and "bisexual". The news came last week in an official Twitch blog post.

Next week, streamers will be able to select from over 350 new tags related to gender, sexual orientation, race, nationality, ability, mental health, and more. The list of tags include transgender, Black, disabled, veteran, and Vtuber, among many others. We will also remove references to “ally” from the LGBTQIA+ tag, and are instead creating a standalone ally tag. These additions won’t change how tagging works and are completely optional. They simply give creators more choices.

With the latest additions, streamers can now use a plethora of new tags to their streams. Twitch also warned users that anyone trying to use the new tags for malicious purposes should be expecting a swift punishment.

Our hope is that these new tags help every community, but especially those that are underrepresented, grow and thrive. As with any means of discovery, there are bad actors who may use the ability to find streams for malicious purposes. Users that utilize these tags as a means to harass those displaying the tags will be subject to enforcement of our Hateful Conduct and Harassment Policy.

In the past few years we've seen a lot of social pressure on some of the biggest companies to be more transgender-inclusive with their products. Sites like LinkedIn and Instagram now also allow users to add specific pronouns to their profiles. In the meantime, things are getting heated in the United States as numerous states are signing bills that ban transgender people from participating in sports or getting medical aid.
