Fortnite will switch to Unreal Engine 5 with the release of Chapter 3.
The claim comes from Hypex, our best Fortnite leaker and data miner. In a message shared on Twitter, he claimed that Fortnite will switch to the new Unreal Engine 5 at some point during Chapter 3, as the previously planned switch to Season 8 has been delayed. This brings completely new possibilities for Fortnite and our favorite Battle Royale game could look completely different in the future.
What is Unreal Engine 5?
The Unreal Engine is a game engine developed by Epic Games that was first introduced in 1998 in the first-person shooter game Unreal. Originally developed for PC first-person shooters, it has since been used in a wide variety of 3D games and has also been adopted by other industries, most notably the film and television industries.
How will the Unreal Engine 5 Change Fortnite?
Among other things, Unreal Engine 5 will bring improved graphics and better resource optimization. There will also be new physics changes! Epic Games claims the new engine offers "a generational leap in fidelity" that unlocks new levels of realism. While we can't expect Fortnite to have realistic graphics, it will certainly use the new engine to its advantage.
Also, with the new engine, it will be much easier to create larger worlds, so we can expect the creative mode to get even bigger. Creators will most likely get new modding tools that are compatible with the new engine. We could even see bigger and better live events.
What Could Unreal Engine 5 Look Like in Fortnite?
In fact, the Naruto trailer was already developed with Unreal Engine 5. However, we only got a brief glimpse of what's possible with the engine here.
This video of Unreal Engine itself building a Fortnite world on YouTube. We see how quickly the world can be reshaped, how the water acts with movements, and how the times of the day or even the clouds can be adjusted.
Chapter 3 will be released in December. We're excited to see how Fortnite will develop and what visual optimizations we'll see in just a few weeks.
