Excel Esports came up when it counted and delivered a shocking loss to G2 Esports, preventing the 2020 spring champions with catching up to the top teams.

With several rivals slipping up,it seemed like a great time for G2 Esports to close in on the top teams. The spring champions came off a dominant win against Misfits Gaming on Friday. They faced Excel Esports, a team that had quietly racked up several wins in its last few matches - though many against what analysts saw as weaker teams.

The early game was mostly even, with no kills until substitute AD carry Kristoffer "P1noy" Pedersen’s Senna got First Blood on the enemy Nautilus in what ended as a 2:1 for G2. Mid laner Rasmus "Caps" Winther had a good start as well, taking two kills in the opening 15 minutes of the game. However, Excel had a side lane advantage that gave them the first two turrets and a rare early gold lead against G2. The champions gradually secured a kill lead and 20 minutes in added a third drake to their tally.

It all went downhill fast 24 minutes in as Excel first killed Caps and then went for the Baron. In an extended fight, XL took five kills for two and secured the objective. A minute later, G2 moved in to secure the infernal drake they needed for the soul.

In maybe the biggest swerve of the day, Patrik "Patrik" Jírů’s Aphelios stole the key buff. The crucial fight came 34 minutes in as G2 looked to have gotten a pick on Patrik, but he survived long enough for his team to clean up and push for the win.

It was an impressive game for the Excel carries, especially for Patrik who more than once made G2’s lives miserable. While the spring champions were playing with a substitute, this loss was not something that can be blamed on P1noy alone.
