5 Classic Games Still Awesome In 2021

5 Must play gaming classics

Half life

5. Half-Life

This classic game was released in 1998 by Valve Corporation, yes, the makers of Steam. If you didn't know, Valve actually made games before they got into the distribution business. The game is obviously available on Steam and might sit among the unplayed games in your Steam library, but you should actually play this one.

Half-Life is a story-driven FPS that was very novel for its time and perhaps among the first games to successfully weave FPS action into a story. Keep in mind that the graphics do look a little dated and may not have that Nintendo charm like other games on this list.

However, the story is really compelling as you feel the urgency, shooting your way through extra-dimensional monsters in a science facility that sciended a little too hard. (Image credit: Valve Corporation).

4. Super Mario RPG

This classic game was released by Nintendo in 1996 but more importantly – developed by Squaresoft, now known as Square Enix, the makers of the Final Fantasy games. This collaboration in the 90s perhaps explains why this is such a good game – it has all the charm of Nintendo and the great RPG mechanics and gameplay Square Enix is known for.

Super Mario RPG is best known for its attack timing mechanic that allows you to do extra damage or effects if you press the button at the correct time. While still an RPG, it is rather light on the more hardcore RPG mechanics as it goes for a more simplified level-up system and easy equipment choices. Overall, Super Mario RPG is a beginner-friendly and enjoyable classic. (Image credit: Nintendo)

3. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

This classic game was released by Nintendo in 1995 but can easily be played via the SNES app which is free to all Nintendo Online members. The soundtrack alone is amazing and probably better than 80% of soundtracks found in games today.

Now, you may think this untrue, but trust us, the Donkey Kong Country 2 OST is fire. The game itself is also a great platformer with lots of interesting 2D jumping puzzles and surprisingly hard bosses. (Image credit: Nintendo)

2. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

This "almost" classic game was released in 2002 and is easily available on Steam. Rockstar North took us back in time with this game, all the way to the vaporwave 80s! It is set in the fictional Vice City but is heavily based on Miami city in the 1980s.

Why not give it a try instead of waiting idly around for GTA 6’s release? It is a Grand Theft Auto game through and through and contains all the depravity and gang motifs one would expect out of a Rockstar game. (Image credit: Rockstar Games)

1. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

This classic game was released in 1991 by Nintendo and has withstood the test of time due to its great colorful cartoon-like graphics. If you are eagerly awaiting Breath of the Wild 2 or are already bored with Hyrule Warriors, then this game is probably the GOAT.

So if you haven't played it, you now have a new item to add to your bucket list. The easiest way to play this is to sign up for Nintendo Online and then you have access to a bunch of free SNES games. The app is easily downloaded in the Nintendo Store and a great way to play this classic on a big screen in all its pixelated glory. (Image credit: Nintendo)
