A Trailer for the Mortal Kombat Movie that is set so release this year was dropped yesterday. It features most of the fan favorites, and everything we like about the videogame series. IGN also released a 13-minute long deep-dive with director Simon McQuoid.
Video game adaptations — love them or hate them, but it’s something that will keep happening to our most beloved franchises. With Tekken (the movie) we already got an adaptation of a fighting game and, well how do I put this… It was hella bad. Now it’s Mortal Kombat’s turn. Not sure if I really need to add that, but if you are too young or can't stand violence you shouldn't watch the trailer. Really, don't... With that out of the way let’s take a look at the new trailer:

The story will follow a new character named Cole Young who is some sort of MMA fighter that for some reason gets invited to a tournament where a four-armed giant, storm mages and frost ninjas take part. Fan-favorite Sub-Zero gets quite a bit of screen time and we wanna be honest: When he created a wall of ice just to slam Scorpion through it, we knew this could be a GREAT style over substance movie.
For fans of the series, there is so much to love about this trailer. Sure, the CGI doesn’t look as clean as in, let’s say Alita: Battle Angel, but especially when you watch the director's breakdown of the trailer, you know there is so much love and respect put into this movie. The director sounds like a true fan of the series.
It shows absurd violence, blood, more violence, cool characters, even more violence, and fatalities. By the way, don’t worry: director Simon McQuoid assured, that they tried to push the fatalities to the absolute limit. We already heard some iconic voice lines, like Scorpions “get over here”, the classic “finish them” or Kano himself announcing “Kano wins”.
Of course, the movie will be rated R, anything else just wouldn’t make sense… Its official release date is April 16th, 2021. It will come to theaters, but also be exclusively streamed on HBO Max.
We really look forward to this movie because it looks like it could actually turn out cool. We know there have been a lot of terrible video game adaptation that scarred our little gamer hearts, but hope dies last.
