15 Best Female Movie Villains of All Time

1-15

Nazarii Verbitskiy Nazarii Verbitskiy
Entertainment - October 1st 2026, 23:30 GMT+2
Cassandra Nova

15. Cassandra Nova — Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

Cassandra Nova doesn't need a giant army when she can casually put her fingers through someone's skull and rummage around inside their mind. Emma Corrin plays Charles Xavier's terrifying twin with an almost friendly calm, which makes her rule over the Void feel even nastier. She is absurdly powerful, cheerfully sadistic, and eventually decides that destroying entire timelines sounds like a reasonable afternoon project. | © Marvel Studios

Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad

14. Harley Quinn — Suicide Squad (2016)

Strictly speaking, Harley Quinn spends Suicide Squad on the protagonist side of the story, albeit as a convicted supervillain carrying a baseball bat and making extremely questionable life choices. Margot Robbie nevertheless walked away with the movie, mixing comic-book lunacy with flashes of genuine damage beneath the neon chaos. The film around her may be messy, but Robbie's Harley was instantly recognizable enough to become one of DC's defining screen characters. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Hela

13. Hela — Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Catching Mjolnir would have been enough of an entrance; Hela crushes it with one hand just to eliminate any remaining ambiguity. Cate Blanchett clearly enjoys every second of playing Odin's exiled firstborn, giving the Goddess of Death enough swagger to make conquest look fashionable. Better still, Hela exposes the blood-soaked history underneath Asgard's shiny mythology, even if her preferred solution is considerably more murder than historical reckoning. | © Marvel Studios

Cropped Aileen Wuornos

12. Aileen Wuornos — Monster (2003)

Calling Aileen Wuornos a traditional movie villain is complicated, since Monster is a biographical drama told largely from her perspective and Wuornos was a real person. What cannot be disputed is Charlize Theron's extraordinary transformation into the convicted serial killer, stripping away movie-star glamour without turning the role into impersonation. Patty Jenkins' film shows the abuse, poverty and desperation surrounding Wuornos while refusing to pretend that those circumstances erase the murders she committed. | © Newmarket Films

Cropped Mystique

11. Mystique — X-Men (2000)

Rebecca Romijn's Mystique barely needs dialogue to make everyone uncomfortable. As Magneto's shapeshifting operative, she can infiltrate almost anywhere, impersonate almost anyone, and turn basic human trust into a terrible security policy. The elaborate blue makeup made her visually unforgettable, but Romijn's controlled physical performance did just as much work. Mystique moves like someone who already knows exactly how the fight ends — she's simply waiting for everyone else to catch up. | © 20th Century Fox

Bellatrix Lestrange

10. Bellatrix Lestrange — Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)

Voldemort has plans; Bellatrix Lestrange has hobbies, and unfortunately most of them involve other people's suffering. Helena Bonham Carter enters the franchise with wild-eyed enthusiasm, turning Voldemort's fanatically loyal Death Eater into someone who seems personally delighted whenever a situation becomes more horrible. Her killing of Sirius Black gives that unpredictability real consequences. Bellatrix doesn't merely serve evil — she appears to be having the best night of her life doing it. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Regina George

9. Regina George — Mean Girls (2004)

No superpowers, no murder weapon, just an aggressively curated social hierarchy and the ability to ruin your week before lunch. Rachel McAdams makes Regina George hilarious because her cruelty rarely requires effort; North Shore High simply operates according to rules she invented. Even compliments can sound vaguely threatening coming from her. Regina became the blueprint for the modern teen-movie queen bee because underneath the comedy sits a painfully recognizable form of everyday bullying. | © Paramount Pictures

Cropped Dolores Umbridge

8. Dolores Umbridge — Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)

Pink cardigans, decorative plates of kittens and a torture pen: Dolores Umbridge really commits to mixed messaging. Imelda Staunton makes the Ministry bureaucrat unbearable without turning her into a cartoon, smiling sweetly while dismantling Hogwarts through decrees, surveillance and increasingly sadistic punishments. Voldemort announces that he's evil; Umbridge insists everything is being done according to procedure. Anyone who has survived a petty authority figure understands why that somehow feels worse. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Cropped Miranda Priestly

7. Miranda Priestly — The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Miranda Priestly could destroy someone before breakfast and never interrupt her coffee. Meryl Streep wisely avoids playing the Runway editor as a screaming tyrant; the lowered voice, microscopic expressions and devastating silences are much scarier. Miranda is also maddeningly good at her job, which keeps her from becoming a simple workplace monster. One lecture about a cerulean sweater is enough to remind Andy — and the audience — exactly how much influence she commands. | © 20th Century Fox

Cruelle de Vil 1996

6. Cruella De Vil — 101 Dalmatians (1996)

Wanting a fur coat is one thing. Planning to have dozens of puppies killed specifically to make it is the moment even the fashion industry should probably call security. Glenn Close attacks Cruella De Vil with glorious excess, combining enormous costumes, explosive tantrums and the posture of someone offended by the existence of ordinary people. The live-action remake understands that subtlety would be wasted here. Cruella should enter every room as though she owns both the building and its occupants. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Cropped Alex Forrest

5. Alex Forrest — Fatal Attraction (1987)

Glenn Close takes what begins as an affair and gradually turns it into a domestic siege. Alex Forrest refuses to disappear after Dan Gallagher returns to his family, escalating from desperate phone calls to stalking, violence and one extremely unfortunate rabbit. The role easily could have collapsed into a lurid caricature, but Close gives Alex enough anguish and intelligence to make the deterioration uncomfortable rather than merely sensational. That complexity is exactly why the performance still provokes debate. | © Paramount Pictures

The Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz

4. The Wicked Witch of the West — The Wizard of Oz (1939)

A pointed hat, green skin, flying monkeys and a spectacular cackle: half of pop culture's visual vocabulary for witches can be traced back to Margaret Hamilton. Her Wicked Witch stalks Dorothy across Oz with such unapologetic theatrical malice that she remains intimidating even surrounded by songs, Technicolor scenery and talking scarecrows. Plenty of later villains became darker or more psychologically sophisticated, but Hamilton helped establish what a screen villain could look, sound and move like. | © Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Cropped maleficent 2014

3. Maleficent — Maleficent (2014)

This placement comes with an asterisk the size of Maleficent's horns. Angelina Jolie certainly looks every inch the classic Disney villain, and the curse she places on baby Aurora remains spectacularly cruel, but this retelling ultimately makes Maleficent its wounded protagonist rather than its true antagonist. Jolie still brings magnificent menace whenever required, especially when that razor-thin smile appears. As a villain performance, though, the animated incarnation is considerably less morally complicated. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Cropped Amy Dunne

2. Amy Dunne — Gone Girl (2014)

Amy Dunne doesn't simply frame her husband for murder; she effectively produces, directs and markets the entire scandal. Rosamund Pike's frightening precision makes every new revelation feel like another layer being peeled away from a performance Amy has been giving for years. Even her famous "Cool Girl" monologue functions like a manifesto for the resentment underneath the immaculate surface. David Fincher gave us a marriage thriller; Amy treats it like the world's most elaborate revenge campaign. | © 20th Century Fox

Cropped Annie Wilkes

1. Annie Wilkes — Misery (1990)

Annie Wilkes rescues her favorite novelist from a car wreck, nurses him back to health and then demonstrates why meeting your biggest fan is not always a career milestone. Kathy Bates can switch from maternal warmth to terrifying fury in seconds, making Annie impossible to predict inside that isolated house. The infamous sledgehammer scene delivers the physical horror, but her everyday conversations are somehow worse. Bates won the Academy Award for Best Actress, and it remains astonishingly easy to see why. | © Columbia Pictures

1-15

A great villain can steal a movie, and these women did it without asking permission. From icy masterminds to full-blown agents of chaos, they made audiences fear them, hate them, and occasionally root for them anyway. These are the female movie villains whose performances, personalities, and sheer menace earned them a permanent place in film history.
