7 Things You Never Knew About Freddie Mercury

1-7

The hidden side of Freddie Mercury.

7. His Parents were scared of his fashion sense

Freddie Mercury’s bold fashion choices didn’t always sit well with his family. As a student at Ealing Art College, he loved showing up in wild outfits with black-painted nails. His parents were horrified, begging him to sneak in through the back door so the neighbors wouldn’t see. Freddie, of course, only leaned further into his style. | © Mercury Songs

6. He loved to sing in his birthday suit

Freddie Mercury had his own unusual way of looking after his voice. Struggling with throat nodules, he said, warming up worked best when he did it without clothes. Clothes, he joked, somehow ruined the effect. Doctors advised rest or even surgery, but Freddie kept singing his way. | © Freddie Mercury Solo

5. He once rescued a famous tennis star

Freddie Mercury loved New York nightlife and wasn’t easily scared off. At a rough Brooklyn club, a massive brawl suddenly erupted right at his table. While chairs flew and chaos broke out, tennis legend Billie Jean King froze in fear. Freddie just laughed, pulled her onto the dancefloor, and turned the fight into an excuse to dance. | © 20th Century Studios

4. Small planes scared him

For all his confidence on stage, Freddie Mercury wasn’t so fearless in the air. He hated flying in small planes and once admitted to being terrified during a flight in South America. He gripped the armrests so hard his knuckles turned white, but when the plane landed, he walked out smiling like nothing happened. Fans and photographers never guessed a thing. | © Freddie Mercury Solo

3. He went without sleep for long periods

Freddie Mercury somehow powered through life on just a few hours of rest. He once said two or three hours a night was often enough, catching quick naps on planes to recharge. Long stretches without proper sleep didn’t slow him down – he thrived on always being busy and on the move. For him, even twenty minutes in the air could be a full reset. | © Freddie Mercury Solo

2. He designed the Queen logo himself

Freddie Mercury’s art degree came in handy when Queen needed a logo. After the band’s lineup was complete in 1971, he sketched the now-famous crest himself. The design pulled in zodiac symbols for each member: lions for John and Roger, a crab for Brian, and fairies for Freddie. Funny enough, he admitted he didn’t even believe in astrology. | © Sony Music

Mercury boxer

1. He was an amazing boxer

Freddie Mercury wasn’t just a music legend – he could throw a punch too. Back in school in India, he admitted he was hopeless at cricket and long-distance running, but boxing was a different story. He loved sprinting, played hockey, and said he was “brilliant in the boxing ring.” Sports like football never grabbed him, but Wimbledon and a good game of table tennis? That was his thing. | © Sony Music
