Rachel Weisz can turn a raised eyebrow into an entire subplot, which makes Melina Vostokoff’s limited material feel especially stingy. An Oscar winner equally at home in *The Favourite*, *The Lobster* and *The Constant Gardener*, she is introduced as Natasha’s morally compromised surrogate mother and one of the Red Room’s leading scientists. That should be a banquet. Instead, *Black Widow* mostly asks her to explain mind control, trade dry remarks with David Harbour and switch allegiance quickly enough to join the rescue. | © Marvel Studios

Cropped Djimon Hounsou Guardians of the Galaxy — 2. Djimon Hounsou – Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) / Captain Marvel (2019)

Two Oscar nominations, one volcanic screen presence and, somehow, two MCU movies spent standing several feet behind Lee Pace or Jude Law. *Guardians of the Galaxy* uses Djimon Hounsou as Korath, a grim henchman whose most memorable contribution is failing to recognize Star-Lord before Drax kills him. *Captain Marvel* sends him backward in the timeline only to supply more muscle and suspicious looks. Mads Mikkelsen Doctor Strange 2016 1 — 3. Mads Mikkelsen – Doctor Strange (2016)

Casting Mads Mikkelsen as a sorcerer who believes death itself is the enemy should have produced an MCU villain worth arguing about. *Doctor Strange* instead gives Kaecilius metallic eye makeup, a handful of grim speeches and the thankless job of introducing Dormammu before the real climax begins. The Cannes-winning star of *The Hunt* and television’s Hannibal Lecter can make moral corruption feel seductively reasonable, yet the screenplay barely explores the conviction behind his rebellion. Cropped Peter Dinklage Avengers Infinity War — 4. Peter Dinklage – Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Eitri enters *Avengers: Infinity War* carrying an extinction-sized tragedy: Thanos slaughtered his people, forced him to forge the Infinity Gauntlet and sealed his hands in metal. Peter Dinklage gives those few minutes real anguish, because four Emmys’ worth of authority does not simply switch off in front of a green screen. Then he builds Stormbreaker, watches Thor leave and disappears from the MCU. Cropped Walton Goggins Ant Man and the Wasp — 5. Walton Goggins – Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

Walton Goggins has built a career out of making dangerous men impossible to ignore. Boyd Crowder in *Justified* could hijack a scene with a smile; the Ghoul in *Fallout* can turn cruelty into charisma. Sonny Burch, meanwhile, is a black-market middleman whose defining trait is wanting Hank Pym’s lab. *Ant-Man and the Wasp* keeps sending Goggins into restaurants, cars and interrogation rooms, waiting for sparks from material designed only to keep the chase moving. Cropped Angela Bassett Black Panther — 6. Angela Bassett – Black Panther (2018)

Queen Ramonda should dominate every room in Wakanda; Angela Bassett certainly does, even when *Black Panther* leaves her at the edge of the frame. The actress who once became Tina Turner with frightening conviction spends much of her first MCU outing reacting to T’Challa’s coronation, disappearance and return while other characters drive the politics. Bassett turns ceremonial dialogue into royal decree through posture alone. Marvel eventually realized what it had—*Wakanda Forever* expanded Ramonda and earned Bassett the MCU’s first acting Oscar nomination—but the original film barely uncaps that power. | © Marvel Studios

Annette Bening plays both Dr. Wendy Lawson and the face Carol Danvers assigns to the Supreme Intelligence, a dual role that sounds far richer than it becomes. A five-time Oscar nominee with razor-edged performances in *American Beauty* and *The Grifters* behind her, Bening gets fragments: a mentor seen through corrupted memories, an AI delivering chilly exposition and a brief dance to Nirvana. *Captain Marvel* benefits every time she appears, yet it never lets either character develop beyond what Carol needs explained at that moment. Cropped Benicio del Toro Guardians of the Galaxy — 8. Benicio del Toro – Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Benicio del Toro understood the assignment so aggressively that the Collector seems to have wandered in from a more interesting movie. Draped in white hair, fur and an accent nobody could map, he makes Taneleer Tivan feel ancient, decadent and possibly radioactive. *Guardians of the Galaxy* gives the Oscar winner one memorable showcase—an explanation of the Infinity Stones—then blows up his museum and moves on. Cropped Michael Douglas Ant Man — 9. Michael Douglas – Ant-Man (2015)

*Ant-Man* gets genuine mileage from Michael Douglas: Hank Pym’s bitterness, guilt and wounded relationship with Hope keep the comedy attached to something human. Even so, asking the star of *Wall Street* and *Falling Down* to spend most of the movie explaining particles to Paul Rudd feels like hiring a master chef to supervise a microwave. Douglas sells every grim warning about shrinking between molecules, while the screenplay keeps Hank safely in mentor mode. Cropped Glenn Close Guardians of the Galaxy — 10. Glenn Close – Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Glenn Close did not need a cape; one look as Nova Prime could have grounded an entire Xandarian political thriller. Instead, *Guardians of the Galaxy* stations one of cinema’s most decorated performers behind a command desk, where she receives bad news, orders an evacuation and looks sternly at tactical displays. Irani Rael matters to the planet, but barely to the story. Cropped Robert Redford Captain America The Winter Soldier — 11. Robert Redford – Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

*Captain America: The Winter Soldier* uses Robert Redford better than most names on this list, which almost makes his casting feel extravagant rather than wasteful. As Alexander Pierce, the star of *Three Days of the Condor* brings decades of political-thriller credibility to HYDRA’s smiling bureaucracy. He never plays Pierce like a comic-book villain; the horror is that this polished statesman regards mass murder as sensible administration. Redford is excellent, but Marvel essentially borrowed an architect of paranoid American cinema to authenticate one exceptionally classy conspiracy and a brief later cameo. | © Marvel Studios

Cropped Laurence Fishburne Ant man and the Wasp — 12. Laurence Fishburne – Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

Laurence Fishburne arrives as Bill Foster with enough history to open a second movie: former S.H.I.E.L.D. scientist, onetime colleague of Hank Pym and veteran of Project Goliath. *Ant-Man and the Wasp* reduces all of that to academic sparring, a 21-foot anecdote and his role as Ava Starr’s protective surrogate father. Fishburne gives the exposition warmth and weariness, but Morpheus should not feel like visiting faculty in somebody else’s adventure. The film keeps teasing old resentments between Foster and Pym, then settles for another argument beside laboratory equipment. | © Marvel Studios

Christian bale thor msn — 13. Christian Bale – Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

Christian Bale arrives in *Thor: Love and Thunder* looking ready to drag the MCU into a nightmare. His Gorr is gaunt, grieving and furious at gods who treat worshippers as disposable, a part perfectly tuned to the actor’s appetite for transformation. Unfortunately, the God Butcher kills only one god on screen before spending much of the movie chasing children through a comedy full of jealous weapons and screaming goats. Bale supplies a tragic villain; the film keeps changing the station. Even scenes he filmed with Peter Dinklage and Jeff Goldblum were removed from the final cut. | © Marvel Studios

Cropped Tilda Swinton Doctor Strange — 14. Tilda Swinton – Doctor Strange (2016)

Tilda Swinton is such natural casting for cosmic strangeness that *Doctor Strange* nearly disguises how awkwardly it uses her. The Oscar winner gives the Ancient One wit, menace and an unexpectedly moving final scene, then exits before the mythology can deepen around her. More damagingly, her performance became inseparable from Marvel’s decision to replace a traditionally Tibetan character with a white actress—a choice Kevin Feige later acknowledged was a mistake. Kenneth Branagh needed *Thor* to sound half like Shakespeare and half like a Saturday-morning cartoon, so he hired Anthony Hopkins to make the combination legal. As Odin, Hopkins can banish a son, silence a hall and turn “you are unworthy” into an Old Testament verdict. The role is larger than a cameo, yet it mostly asks a two-time Best Actor winner to sit in armor and pronounce lore.
