15 Actors Who Were Way Too Old to Play High Schoolers

1-15

Entertainment - October 14th 2026, 22:00 GMT+2
Shay Mitchell in Pretty Little Liars

15. Shay Mitchell as Emily Fields in Pretty Little Liars (2010) – Character age: 16 | Actor age: 23

Rosewood’s teenagers had immaculate hair, complicated love lives, and apparently no time for homework between murder investigations. Shay Mitchell was 23 when Pretty Little Liars premiered, playing 16-year-old swimmer Emily Fields. The seven-year gap was less distracting than the town’s spectacular lack of responsible adults. Still, Emily’s fear of coming out gave Mitchell something recognizably adolescent to work with beneath all that polished styling: being terrified that honesty might change how your family sees you. | © Warner Bros. Television

Winona Ryder in Girl Interrupted

14. Winona Ryder as Susanna Kaysen in Girl, Interrupted (1999) – Character age: 18 | Actor age: 28

At 27 during filming, Winona Ryder returned to the uncertainty of 18 as Susanna Kaysen, a young woman entering psychiatric care after finishing school. Girl, Interrupted gets little mileage from the usual tricks for making adults look teenage; Susanna’s vulnerability comes through in how readily she lets Lisa dominate their friendship. Ryder’s watchful, hesitant performance suggests someone trying on other people’s explanations for her life because she hasn’t yet found one she trusts herself. | © Columbia Pictures

Florence Pugh in Little Women

13. Florence Pugh as Amy March in Little Women (2019) – Character age: 12–20 | Actor age: 23

Watching Florence Pugh sulk in a classroom requires a brief negotiation with your own eyes. She was 22 during filming, portraying Amy March from childhood into young adulthood without a younger actress taking over. The pigtails aren’t especially persuasive; the petty sibling warfare absolutely is. Amy burning Jo’s manuscript feels like a child’s furious attempt to make herself matter, which makes her later understanding of marriage, money, and limited opportunities considerably more interesting than a simple makeover. | © Columbia Pictures

Cory Monteith in Glee

12. Cory Monteith as Finn Hudson in Glee (2009) – Character age: 16 | Actor age: 27

Finn Hudson could handle a football field more comfortably than a dance routine, and Cory Monteith made that distinction count. He was 27 when Glee premiered, considerably older than the sophomore whose reputation supposedly depended on staying out of show choir. His slightly lumbering presence became an advantage whenever Finn tried to keep up with more assured performers. You believed the embarrassment of a popular kid discovering that being admired in one room meant absolutely nothing in another. | © 20th Century Fox Television

Darren Barnet in Never Have I Ever

11. Darren Barnet as Paxton Hall-Yoshida in Never Have I Ever (2020) – Character age: 16 | Actor age: 29

Darren Barnet turned 29 on the very day Never Have I Ever premiered. His birthday present? A worldwide audience meeting him as teenage heartthrob Paxton Hall-Yoshida. That unusually finished appearance suits the way Devi initially sees Paxton: less an accessible classmate than a walking fantasy. The more rewarding material arrives when his academic insecurities interrupt the admiration, giving Barnet the chance to play a boy who has been praised for everything except using his brain. | © Universal Television

Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider Man

10. Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) – Character age: 17 | Actor age: 28

Superpowers are easy enough to accept. Andrew Garfield still needing permission to leave class takes slightly more effort. The actor was 27 during filming, playing a high-school Peter Parker whose skateboard and headphones announced his teenage credentials before he opened his mouth. Garfield proved more convincing in the unfinished conversations with Gwen Stacy: all false starts, restless movements, and attempted coolness. Saving New York looked manageable next to the apparently impossible business of asking someone out. | © Columbia Pictures

Jason Earles Hannah Montana

9. Jason Earles as Jackson Stewart in Hannah Montana (2006) – Character age: 16 | Actor age: 28

The Stewart household’s funniest casting secret belonged to Miley’s brother. Jason Earles was 28 when Hannah Montana debuted, despite playing 16-year-old Jackson opposite a genuinely teenage Miley Cyrus. His youthful face helped, but so did his willingness to surrender every scrap of adult dignity for a gag. Between sibling arguments and humiliating shifts at Rico’s, Jackson behaved like someone whose entire future could be derailed by an inconvenient chore. Maturity never stood much of a chance. | © Disney Channel

Leonardo Di Caprio in Catch Me If You Can

8. Leonardo DiCaprio as Frank Abagnale Jr. in Catch Me If You Can (2002) – Character age: 16–18 | Actor age: 28

A grown actor playing a teenager pretending to be a grown man: Catch Me If You Can asks Leonardo DiCaprio to juggle several layers of deception. He was 27 during filming, yet Frank’s early bluff as a substitute teacher establishes the trick beautifully. His authority depends on everyone accepting the costume. DiCaprio lets that confidence evaporate around Frank’s fractured family, reminding us that the impressive uniforms belong to a runaway who still wants his parents back together. | © DreamWorks Pictures

Shirley Henderson in Harry Potter

7. Shirley Henderson as Moaning Myrtle in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) — Character age: 14 | Actor age: 36

Death froze Moaning Myrtle at 14; casting gave her the services of a 36-year-old Shirley Henderson. That enormous gap becomes oddly easy to forget once Myrtle starts turning a Hogwarts bathroom into her personal grievance department. Henderson makes every slight sound freshly devastating, even when the girl has had decades to brood over it. The translucent effects provide the ghost, but the wounded vanity supplies the schoolgirl who still desperately wants somebody to notice her. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Chase Stokes in Outer Banks

6. Chase Stokes as John B in Outer Banks (2020) – Character age: 16–17 | Actor age: 27

Child protective services pursuing John B is slightly surreal when he looks capable of conducting the appointment himself. Chase Stokes was 27 when Outer Banks premiered, lending its teenage treasure hunter the appearance of someone several summers beyond graduation. Fortunately, John B’s confidence rarely comes with sound judgment. Stokes commits to that gap between certainty and competence, making each reckless decision feel urgent enough that you almost forget this boy should have considerably more adult supervision. | © Netflix

Stockard Channing Grease 1

5. Stockard Channing as Betty Rizzo in Grease (1978) – Character age: 17 | Actor age: 33

Rizzo looks as though she has already heard every line the boys at Rydell High could possibly try. Stockard Channing being 33 during filming certainly helps explain the impression. Her performance gives Grease a welcome streak of impatience with its own romantic fantasies, particularly when Sandy becomes the target of her bedroom mockery. Then “There Are Worse Things I Could Do” exposes how much the judgment hurts. The toughest student in school suddenly has nobody to hide behind. | © Paramount Pictures

Joe Keery in Stranger Things

4. Joe Keery as Steve Harrington in Stranger Things (2016) – Character age: 17 | Actor age: 24

Before the babysitting duties and monster battles, Steve Harrington was a boy far too invested in what his friends thought. Joe Keery was 24 when Stranger Things premiered, playing a high-schooler whose carefully maintained status could unravel over Nancy Wheeler. The impressive hair makes Steve look fully assembled; his jealous behavior suggests otherwise. Keery leaves room beneath the smugness for embarrassment and regret, making Steve’s eventual usefulness more satisfying than another handsome bully getting his comeuppance. | © Netflix

Stacey Dash in Clueless

3. Stacey Dash as Dionne Davenport in Clueless (1995) – Character age: 16 | Actor age: 28

Dionne’s hat deserves its own screen credit, but Stacey Dash does more than model the wardrobe. At 28 when Clueless opened, she gave Cher’s teenage best friend a wonderfully assured delivery that made every complaint sound like an official ruling. The freeway sequence demolishes that composure in seconds. Watching her panic behind the wheel is a useful reminder that expensive clothes and relationship experience don’t necessarily prepare a Beverly Hills schoolgirl to merge into traffic. | © Paramount Pictures

Zendaya in Euphoria

2. Zendaya as Rue Bennett in Euphoria (2019) – Character age: 17 | Actor age: 22

Rue Bennett’s oversized clothes and exhausted expression offer little of the glossy teenage wish fulfillment found elsewhere on television. Zendaya was 22 when Euphoria premiered, playing a 17-year-old returning from rehab with no neat recovery story ready to go. Her dry narration can suggest total command of the situation, only for a scene with her mother or Jules to reveal the opposite. That distance between sounding self-aware and actually managing your life keeps Rue painfully believable. | © HBO

Rachel Mc Adams in Mean Girls

1. Rachel McAdams as Regina George in Mean Girls (2004) – Character age: 16–17 | Actor age: 25

Only seven years separate Rachel McAdams from Amy Poehler, the actress playing her mother in Mean Girls. McAdams was 25 when the film opened, yet Regina George’s power depends on seeming more sophisticated than the teenagers around her. Watch how casually she compliments someone before dismissing them behind their back. McAdams makes cruelty look practiced rather than impulsive, which explains why an entire cafeteria follows Regina’s rules even when those rules are transparently ridiculous. | © Paramount Pictures

A backpack and a varsity jacket can do a lot of heavy lifting in Hollywood, but they can’t always sell “sixteen.” Teen movies and TV shows have spent decades casting adult actors as high school students, then asking us to ignore the suspiciously mature faces at homeroom. These 15 actors brought plenty to their teenage roles, though looking young enough to need a permission slip wasn’t always part of the package.
