Actresses Who Endured Real Harm While Filming

1-15

Jennifer Lawrence Dont Look Up 2021

1. Jennifer Lawrence – Don’t Look Up (2021)

Playing an astronomer warning everyone about imminent destruction should mostly involve shouting at people who refuse to listen. Jennifer Lawrence also had to contend with a special-effects explosion that sent debris toward her face during filming in Massachusetts. Reports described an injury near her eye, and work stopped for the day. Fortunately, it wasn’t serious—but flying glass is a fairly alarming addition to a comedy’s working conditions. | © Netflix

Old Guard

2. Charlize Theron – The Old Guard (2020)

Five weeks of filming remained when Charlize Theron injured her thumb on The Old Guard. She continued through a lengthy fight sequence and horseback work despite severely limited use of her hand, later describing damage that required surgery. A pinched nerve in her elbow compounded the problem, and three operations followed production. Watching Andy shrug off wounds is considerably less carefree once you know how much repair work her supposedly indestructible performer needed. | © Netflix

Emily Blunt Edge of Tomorrow 2014

3. Emily Blunt – Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Emily Blunt’s personal stunt policy now favors fighting over heights, and Edge of Tomorrow helps explain why. While performing an aerial maneuver that involved landing on her shoulder and stabbing an alien, she landed incorrectly and, in her description, popped two ribs out. The enormous battle armor certainly wasn’t leisurewear, either. Rita’s effortless authority makes the action look controlled; Blunt’s account reveals how quickly that control could disappear. | © Warner Bros.

Blake Lively The Rhythm Section

4. Blake Lively – The Rhythm Section (2020)

The brace in The Rhythm Section wasn’t simply another accessory in Blake Lively’s battered-assassin wardrobe. She seriously injured her hand during a fight with Jude Law, underwent two operations, and spent months recovering while production was interrupted. The filmmakers incorporated a hand injury into the story to accommodate the aftermath. That scrappy, unpolished combat was central to the character, but achieving it came with consequences no amount of convincing makeup could reproduce. | © Eon Productions

Halle Berry The Call 2013

5. Halle Berry – The Call (2013)

A thriller about a 911 operator ended up requiring an actual emergency call when Halle Berry injured herself filming The Call. During a fight sequence, she fell and reportedly struck her head on concrete, prompting a hospital visit. Her representative described the injury as minor and confirmed her release in good health. Director Brad Anderson later recalled the uncomfortable coincidence: his production had briefly needed the very service its heroine spends the movie providing. | © TriStar Pictures

Charlize theron aeon flux

6. Charlize Theron – Æon Flux (2005)

Nine days into Æon Flux, Charlize Theron attempted a back handspring and landed on her neck on a concrete bridge. She suffered a herniated disc, and production stopped while she recovered. Theron has spoken about how close the injury was to her spinal cord and the possibility of paralysis. Her subsequent action career makes it easy to overlook this early setback, but superhero flexibility clearly offered no protection against a badly misjudged landing. | © Paramount Pictures

Cropped Uma Thurman Kill Bill Vol 2 2004

7. Uma Thurman – Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)

After all those swords and elaborate fights, a driving shot caused Uma Thurman’s devastating Kill Bill injury. She said she had expressed concerns about the car before driving along a sandy road in Mexico, where she crashed into a palm tree. The accident left her with a concussion and injuries she later described as permanent damage to her neck and knees. The footage is distressing precisely because nothing about it resembles a choreographed movie crash. | © Miramax

Cropped Nicole Kidman Moulin Rouge 2001

8. Nicole Kidman – Moulin Rouge! (2001)

Satine’s costumes sell a fantasy of effortless glamour; Nicole Kidman’s ribs had a rather different experience. Making Moulin Rouge! involved a broken rib that, she recalled, broke again when she was put back into a corset too soon. She also tore cartilage in her knee, an injury that later disrupted her work on Panic Room. The singing and dancing deserved applause already, without the additional knowledge that getting dressed could undo her recovery. | © 20th Century Fox

Cropped Kate Winslet Titanic 1997

9. Kate Winslet – Titanic (1997)

Kate Winslet’s account of making Titanic includes a chipped elbow bone, bruised arms, and a knee gashed after slipping on deck. Then came the underwater scare: her coat caught on a gate during a flooded sequence, leaving her struggling to free herself before running out of breath. Rose’s determination is one of the film’s great pleasures. Knowing how physically punishing the shoot became gives those desperate escapes an uncomfortable extra layer. | © Paramount Pictures

Michelle Yeoh Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

10. Michelle Yeoh – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

Michelle Yeoh initially hoped she had merely sprained her knee while filming an early fight in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. An MRI delivered worse news: a torn ligament requiring surgery and intensive rehabilitation. Ang Lee reassured her that her health came first and rearranged the schedule, leaving another major fight until late in production. Her exquisite control onscreen becomes even more impressive when you realize how much of that shoot depended on rebuilding it. | © Sony Pictures Classics

Cropped Tippi Hedren Roar 1981

11. Tippi Hedren – Roar (1981)

With so many lions roaming through Roar, an elephant might seem like a comparatively reassuring scene partner. That assumption did Tippi Hedren no favors: an encounter with the animal left her with fractures and needing hospital treatment. She was also among those injured by the production’s big cats. Hedren helped bring this wildlife project into existence, which makes its legacy particularly uneasy—a film intended to celebrate animals repeatedly exposed its human participants to serious danger. | © Filmways Pictures

Drew Barrymore Charlies Angels Full Throttle 2003

12. Drew Barrymore – Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003)

Drew Barrymore’s least glamorous action-movie accessory was a cushion she needed after fracturing her tailbone on Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. She recalled being kicked backward into a chair during a scene with Justin Theroux without her protective pad in place. Her stunt double subsequently took over demanding work while she recovered. Barrymore has found the humor in explaining that cushion to restaurant patrons, though the injury itself was a miserable souvenir from such a gleefully ridiculous movie. | © Universal Pictures

Cropped Linda Blair Ellen Burstyn The Exorcist 1973

13. Linda Blair & Ellen Burstyn – The Exorcist (1973)

Forget the supposed curse for a moment; the machinery on The Exorcist caused enough trouble without supernatural assistance. Linda Blair said a malfunctioning restraint on the moving bed allowed it to batter her back, fracturing her lower spine. Ellen Burstyn suffered a lasting back injury when a harness pulled her violently to the floor. Their accounts make the film’s celebrated physical intensity harder to admire without reservation: some of that pain belonged to the performers. | © Warner Bros.

Cropped Elizabeth Taylor National Velvet 1944

14. Elizabeth Taylor – National Velvet (1944)

At just 12, Elizabeth Taylor made an aspiring rider’s determination feel completely natural in National Velvet. Her own riding experience, however, included a fall during production that injured her back and was later associated with persistent trouble. The film established her as a major young star, giving its triumphant story a painful offscreen counterpart. Admiring her confidence in the saddle is easy; remembering how young she was when she suffered that injury changes the picture. | © Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

Cropped Margaret Hamilton

15. Margaret Hamilton – The Wizard of Oz (1939)

The Wicked Witch’s fiery disappearance became horribly literal for Margaret Hamilton when the flames arrived before she had safely descended beneath the Wizard of Oz set. Burns to her face and hand kept her away for roughly six weeks. Removing the green makeup from injured skin added to the ordeal, and she returned determined to avoid further fire work. That spectacular entrance-and-exit routine demanded a level of personal risk no childhood viewer would reasonably suspect. | © Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

A convincing scene can earn an actress rave reviews without revealing what it cost her to film it. Behind some celebrated performances are accounts of physical injuries, emotional distress, and working conditions that deserve more scrutiny than the usual praise for “dedication.” These actresses suffered real harm on movie sets, raising uncomfortable questions about who gets protected when a production puts the perfect take first.
