15 Video Games That Looked Amazing but Were Boring to Play

1-15

All style, no substance.

Cropped Killzone Shadow Fall

15. Killzone: Shadow Fall (2013)

Launch titles get a pass for a lot of things, but Killzone: Shadow Fall used its graphics budget on skyboxes instead of excitement. The futuristic city looked like a tech demo Sony wheeled out to sell PS4 consoles, and that is basically what it was. Missions blur together fast once you notice the shooting never evolves past cover and wait. Pretty skyline, forgettable war. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment
Lair

14. Lair (2007)

A dragon-riding game had one job, and Lair fumbled it by handing combat to the PS3's motion controls. Tilting the entire controller to steer a dragon through canyon fights sounded clever on paper and felt miserable in your hands. Factor 5 built genuinely massive battles with hundreds of units on screen, which only made the broken controls more frustrating to sit through. The visuals aged better than the experience ever played. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment
Knack

13. Knack (2013)

Nobody expected a PS4 launch mascot platformer to carry the console, and Knack made sure of that. Knack himself shifts size and shape with genuinely impressive particle effects, stacking rocks and junk onto his body in real time. Underneath that is a combat loop of mashing one button against enemies who barely react differently from level to level. A tech showcase wearing a kid's game as a costume. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment
Anthem

12. Anthem (2019)

Flying in Anthem felt better than flying in most games that are actually about flying, which makes the rest of it sting more. Javelin suits rocket through waterfalls and canyons with a sense of speed BioWare never got right again. Strip away the flight and you get loot-shooter missions copy-pasted across a map with nothing memorable happening in any of them. EA shelved the whole thing within two years for a reason. | © Electronic Arts
Star Wars Outlaws

11. Star Wars Outlaws (2024)

Kay Vess walks through some of the best-lit cantinas Star Wars has ever put in a game, and then the stealth sections start. Star Wars Outlaws leans so hard on crouch-and-wait mechanics that entire planets start to feel like the same hallway. Massive Entertainment clearly spent its energy on lighting, weather, and skyboxes instead of mission variety. Beautiful galaxy, same three gameplay loops on repeat. | © Ubisoft
Agony

10. Agony (2018)

Hell gets old fast when every corridor in Agony looks the same shade of rotting flesh. The game sells you on demon anatomy and nightmare architecture, then hands you a possession mechanic that mostly means wandering in circles. Enemies one-shot you for sport while checkpoints sit miles apart. Madhead Games built a genuinely upsetting world and forgot to put a real game inside it. | © PlayStation Network
The Callisto Protocol

9. The Callisto Protocol (2022)

Striking Distance Studios wanted The Callisto Protocol to feel like walking through a horror movie set, and visually it does. Black Iron Prison drips with detail, every corpse and rusted pipe placed for maximum dread. The problem shows up the moment combat starts, because the dodge system turns every fight into the same side-to-side shuffle. A game this gory should never feel this repetitive by hour three. | © Krafton
Cropped Beyond Two Souls

8. Beyond: Two Souls (2013)

Jodie Holmes spends most of Beyond: Two Souls reacting to things rather than driving them. Quantic Dream poured motion-capture budget into Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe's performances, and the faces genuinely sell the drama. But press a button at the wrong half-second and the story barely notices, because failure rarely changes anything on screen. It plays less like a game and more like a movie that occasionally asks permission to continue. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment
Avatar Frontiers Of Pandora NPC Character

7. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (2023)

Pandora looks like nowhere else in gaming, all glowing flora and floating cliffs rendered at a scale that makes jaws drop. Massive Entertainment clearly studied James Cameron's films frame by frame to get the bioluminescence right. Strip away the scenery in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, though, and it's tower-climbing and outpost-clearing on a loop familiar from a dozen other open worlds. Gorgeous skies can't disguise a checklist underneath them. | © Ubisoft
Forspoken

6. Forspoken (2023)

Magic that looks this good should not get boring this quickly. Frey's spell effects light up the screen in Forspoken, all neon particles and elemental flash, and Luminous Productions clearly spent real money making her hands look cool. The enemy camps keep repeating anyway, the same pack of creatures waiting around every bend of Athia. Great parkour, great spectacle, and somehow nothing new to fight with any of it. | © Square Enix
The Medium 2021

5. The Medium (2021)

Two realities overlap on screen at once in The Medium, and for about an hour that split view feels like a genuine trick nobody else was pulling off. Then the puzzles show their hand. Walk here, shine a light there, pull a lever you already saw from three rooms away. The dual-reality gimmick carries the whole game because nothing else underneath it was built to last this long.
Senuas Saga Hellblade II

4. Senua's Saga: Hellblade II (2024)

Senua crosses Iceland in Senua's Saga: Hellblade II looking more like a motion-captured performance than a video game character, which is both the achievement and the problem. Every frame could hang in a museum. The walk-and-talk pacing between those frames rarely asks for more than holding a direction and waiting. Ninja Theory spent years perfecting a face that has nothing difficult to actually do. | © Xbox Game Studios
FINAL FANTASY XIII

3. Final Fantasy XIII (2009)

Thirteen years later, people still bring up the corridor. Final Fantasy XIII locks players into a straight line for close to twenty hours before the world finally opens up, and by then plenty had already quit. The environments shift from crystal wastelands to floating cities without ever losing their shine. A hallway is still a hallway, no matter how much light bounces off the walls. | © Square Enix
Ryse Son of Rome

2. Ryse: Son of Rome (2013)

Crassus Vinius Ryse never lived, but Ryse: Son of Rome built him a Rome so detailed you can count the mosaic tiles. Combat boils down to the same three prompts, dodge left, counter, finishing move, dressed up in different armor every level. Crytek clearly poured the budget into marble columns and burning skylines instead of fight variety. Rome has never looked better while doing so little. | © Microsoft Studios
Cropped The Order 1886

1. The Order: 1886 (2015)

Nineteenth-century London rendered in The Order: 1886 looks close enough to a period film that screenshots of it fooled people online. Cover, aim, shoot, repeat, that's the entire combat loop stretched across a campaign barely long enough to earn the word. Werewolves and steampunk weapons show up like proof the ideas were there, just never given room to grow. Ready at Dawn built a tech demo so convincing some players mistook it for a finished game. | © Sony Computer Entertainment
