James Purefoy

15. James Purefoy — V for Vendetta (2005)

James Purefoy spent weeks filming as V before walking away from V for Vendetta, unable to work under the mask for the entire shoot. Hugo Weaving replaced him and ended up voicing the role without ever showing his face on camera. Purefoy has said the physical strain of acting through latex for months just wasn't sustainable. Weaving reportedly never watched the finished film. | © FX

Samantha Morton

14. Samantha Morton — The Libertine (2004)

Voice work almost saved the recasting on The Libertine, since Samantha Morton left the 2004 production before shooting wrapped around her. Samantha Sherwin took over the role opposite Johnny Depp, though details on the exact reason for Morton's exit were never widely publicized. The film had already struggled to secure financing for years under director Laurence Dunmore. Morton's replacement barely registers in most cast discussions of the movie today. | © Universal Pictures

Colin Firth in The Kings Speech

13. Colin Firth — Paddington (2014)

Paddington almost got a different voice at the very last minute. Colin Firth had recorded dialogue for the title bear in Paddington before producers decided his voice didn't match the character's youthful energy. Ben Whishaw stepped in during post-production, and the 2014 film went on to make over $268 million worldwide. Firth has said publicly he took the recasting well and understood the decision. | © The Weinstein Company
Robert De Niro

12. Robert De Niro — Edge of Darkness (2010)

Edge of Darkness lost its lead when Robert De Niro exited the 2010 thriller during pre-production over creative differences with the studio. Mel Gibson stepped into the role instead, marking his first leading part in eight years. The film was based on a 1985 BBC miniseries of the same name. Director Martin Campbell had worked on both versions. | © Netflix

Cropped Nicole Kidman Dogville 2003

11. Nicole Kidman — Panic Room (2002)

Nicole Kidman dropped out of Panic Room just weeks into filming in 2001 due to a knee injury from an earlier film, Moulin Rouge!. Jodie Foster took over the lead role of Meg Altman opposite Kristen Stewart. Director David Fincher had already shot several scenes with Kidman before the recasting happened. The film went on to gross over $196 million worldwide. | © A-Film Distribution

Eric Stoltz Back to the Future

10. Eric Stoltz — Back to the Future (1985)

Five weeks of footage exist somewhere with Eric Stoltz playing Marty McFly, all of it unused. Robert Zemeckis and producer Steven Spielberg decided his take was too dramatic for a comedy. Michael J. Fox got the call while still filming Family Ties and shot both projects at once. Stoltz has said he holds no grudge and rarely discusses it. | © Universal Pictures
Peter Sellers Casino Royale

9. Peter Sellers — Casino Royale (1967)

Peter Sellers walked off the set of Casino Royale in 1967 before finishing his scenes as Bond. His feud with co-star Orson Welles got so bad the two reportedly refused to appear in shots together. The production patched around the gap using doubles and a script rewrite. Sellers never filmed an ending, which is why the movie's final act barely makes sense. | © Columbia Pictures
Richard Gere

8. Richard Gere — The Lords of Flatbush (1974)

A young Richard Gere left The Lords of Flatbush partway through filming after clashing with co-star Sylvester Stallone. Stallone, who was also rewriting scenes, has said the two never got along on set. Gere's role as Chico was recast, and the character's screen time shifted elsewhere in the finished cut. It was 1974, years before either man became a household name. | © The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon / YouTube

Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part III

7. Winona Ryder — The Godfather Part III (1990)

Winona Ryder pulled out of The Godfather Part III just days before shooting began in 1990. Exhaustion from back to back film work reportedly left her unable to continue. Francis Ford Coppola cast his own daughter, Sofia, in the role instead. Sofia's performance became one of the most criticized parts of the entire trilogy. | © Paramount Pictures
Despicable Two 2 image

6. Al Pacino — Despicable Two 2 (2013)

Al Pacino recorded dialogue for a role in Despicable Me 2 before dropping out over creative differences in 2013. He was set to voice the villain El Macho, a retired luchador turned avocado farmer. Illumination brought in Benjamin Bratt to finish the part instead. The swap happened late enough that trailers still referenced Pacino's involvement. | © Universal Pictures
Mick Jagger Fitzcarraldo

5. Mick Jagger — Fitzcarraldo (1982)

Mick Jagger signed on to play Wilbur, a role written specifically with him in mind, in Fitzcarraldo. Werner Herzog shot around eighteen months of footage before the Rolling Stones tour forced Jagger to leave for good. His character was simply cut from the script entirely rather than recast. Herzog later called the finished film a document of "the amazing accidents of nature," which is one way to describe losing your lead twice over. | © 20th Century Fox

4. Bette Davis — Wicked Stepmother (1989)

Something was clearly wrong on the set of Wicked Stepmother, and Bette Davis knew it before anyone said so out loud. She left after shooting only a handful of scenes, citing poor health, and never returned. Director Larry Cohen rewrote the film around her absence, making her character vanish in a puff of smoke early on. It was Davis's final screen credit, released in 1989, the same year she died. | © 20th Century Fox

James Remar Alien

3. James Remar — Aliens (1986)

Bill Paxton wasn't the only marine almost missing from Aliens. James Remar was originally cast as Corporal Hicks and spent time filming before producers decided he wasn't working out. James Cameron brought in Michael Biehn to replace him, reshooting Remar's scenes from scratch. Hicks became one of the more memorable characters in the 1986 film, built entirely on a recast nobody advertised. | © 20th Century Fox
Cropped Buddy Ebsen

2. Buddy Ebsen — The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Ten days into filming The Wizard of Oz, Buddy Ebsen collapsed and stopped breathing. The aluminum powder used for his Tin Man makeup had coated his lungs, a detail MGM hadn't tested for safety. He spent two weeks in an oxygen tent recovering, and doctors advised he never go near the role again. Jack Haley took over as the Tin Man, and the makeup formula was quietly changed to a paste. | © MGM
Jean Claude Van Damme

1. Jean-Claude Van Damme — Predator (1987)

Jean-Claude Van Damme was hired to play the alien in Predator, back when the creature was meant to move fast and fight like a martial artist. The suit he wore was thin, uncomfortable, and reportedly gave him heatstroke during test shoots in Mexico. Producers scrapped the whole design after deciding the creature needed to be terrifying rather than agile. Van Damme was let go, and Kevin Peter Hall took over in the taller, redesigned suit audiences know today. | © Sony Pictures Releasing
