From Bad to Good: 20 Movies Where the Villain Becomes the Hero

1-20

Ignacio Weil Ignacio Weil
Entertainment - October 17th 2026, 22:00 GMT+2
Cropped Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 2011 snape

1. Severus Snape - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)

Alan Rickman spends much of the Harry Potter series making a classroom entrance feel like a disciplinary hearing. Then Snape’s memories reveal the double agent beneath that magnificent sneer: his allegiance to Dumbledore, his love for Lily, and the terrible arrangements behind an apparent betrayal. The revelation doesn’t excuse his treatment of students. It does force us to reconsider a man whose most courageous work required almost everyone to despise him. Hogwarts could still have used an HR department. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Cropped Mad Max Fury Road 2015

2. Nux - Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Chrome spray, suicidal enthusiasm, and a dictator’s approval: Nux has been sold a deeply rotten version of paradise. Nicholas Hoult’s War Boy initially pursues Furiosa because dying for Immortan Joe sounds like the greatest achievement available. Capable’s compassion introduces an unfamiliar possibility—that he might matter while alive. His eventual sacrifice redirects that desperate courage toward people who actually care about him. George Miller makes the same appetite for danger look horrifying at the start and heartbreaking at the finish. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Cropped maleficent 2014

3. Maleficent - Maleficent (2014)

Cursing someone’s baby is a spectacularly indefensible response to a breakup, even one involving stolen wings and royal treachery. Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent has plenty to answer for when she begins watching over Aurora, gradually developing the affection that undermines her revenge. The decisive twist gives true love’s kiss to the woman who cast the curse. Disney’s revision works best in that contradiction: she must become the protector this child needs after creating the danger herself. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Cropped despicable me 2010

4. Gru - Despicable Me (2010)

Three cookie sellers breach defenses that an arsenal of supervillain gadgets couldn’t crack: Gru’s commitment to being completely unlovable. He adopts Margo, Edith, and Agnes to infiltrate Vector’s home, treating parenthood as an unusually elaborate burglary tool. Bedtime stories and ballet obligations gradually interfere with stealing the moon. Steve Carell makes those interruptions funny without rushing the affection, so Gru’s rescue of the girls feels like the moment his actions finally catch up with feelings he has been trying to ignore. | © Illumination

Cropped megamind 2010

5. Megamind - Megamind (2010)

Winning ruins Megamind’s life. With Metro Man apparently defeated, the blue criminal mastermind discovers that conquering a city leaves an awkward amount of free time. His attempt to manufacture a replacement superhero produces the genuinely dangerous Tighten, forcing him to clean up a catastrophe of his own making. Beneath Will Ferrell’s grandstanding delivery is a clever distinction between playing the villain and choosing cruelty. Megamind can keep the cape, the gadgets, and the entrance music; his priorities need replacing. | © DreamWorks Animation

Cropped spider man 2 2004

6. Dr. Otto Octavius - Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Before the bank robbery and murderous tentacles, Otto Octavius is someone Peter Parker would happily spend an afternoon discussing science with. Alfred Molina preserves traces of that warmth after a laboratory disaster kills Otto’s wife and leaves his mechanical arms influencing his mind. Peter ultimately reaches him by appealing to the scientist’s abandoned principles. Drowning the unstable reactor means surrendering both his life and his defining ambition—a fittingly devastating price for a man who confused scientific achievement with personal worth. | © Columbia Pictures

Cropped ice age 2002

7. Diego - Ice Age (2002)

Revisit the first Ice Age and Diego’s introduction is nastier than his subsequent franchise career might suggest. He intends to deliver a human baby to his murderous pack, with Manny added to the menu along the way. Then the mammoth risks his life to save him. That unexpected generosity gives Diego a reason to question where he belongs, culminating in his defense of Manny against Soto. The sarcastic saber-tooth earns his place in this makeshift herd by turning against his own. | © 20th Century Fox

Cropped treasure planet 2002

8. John Silver - Treasure Planet (2002)

A fortune hangs within reach, Jim Hawkins needs saving, and John Silver cannot hold on to both. Treasure Planet builds toward that choice through a mentorship complicated by a very real mutiny: Silver cares for Jim while preparing to betray his companions. Brian Murray’s gruff affection makes the relationship convincing well before the pirate abandons his treasure. For a boy already wounded by his father’s departure, having this unreliable adult finally choose him carries more weight than any chest of gold. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Cropped catch me if you can 2002

9. Frank Abagnale Jr - Catch Me If You Can (2002)

The most surprising destination in Frank Abagnale Jr.’s parade of borrowed identities is an office where he belongs. Spielberg’s con artist spends much of the film impersonating professionals while fleeing the wreckage of his family life. FBI agent Carl Hanratty eventually helps redirect his talent for deception into detecting check fraud. Leonardo DiCaprio keeps Frank’s confidence just brittle enough to expose the frightened young man underneath; accepting ordinary work becomes a bigger personal leap than another extravagant escape. | © DreamWorks Pictures

Cropped the grinch 2000

10. The Grinch - The Grinch (2000)

Jim Carrey turns Christmas resentment into a full-body athletic performance, sneering and contorting through Ron Howard’s extravagantly decorated Whoville. This Grinch steals the town’s presents expecting collective misery, only to hear its residents celebrating anyway. His conversion then gets a practical test when Cindy Lou Who is endangered by the slipping sleigh. Saving her and returning the stolen goods give the enlarged heart something useful to do. Even Carrey’s rubber-faced chaos briefly makes room for an apology without a punchline attached. | © Universal Pictures

Cropped pitch black 2000

11. Riddick - Pitch Black (2000)

On a planet full of creatures that hunt in darkness, the escaped convict with enhanced night vision suddenly becomes everyone’s most valuable acquaintance. Riddick’s usefulness doesn’t automatically make him trustworthy; he still prepares to abandon survivors when escape becomes possible. Fry’s refusal to leave them pushes him into returning for Jack and Imam. Vin Diesel retains the character’s menace throughout, which keeps the rescue tense. Doing something decent requires a choice here, and Riddick takes an uncomfortable amount of convincing. | © Universal Pictures

Cropped the emperors new groove 2000

12. Kuzco - The Emperor’s New Groove (2000)

Kuzco’s proposed summer retreat requires demolishing Pacha’s home, an inconvenience the emperor considers entirely Pacha’s problem. Becoming a llama abruptly reduces his negotiating power. David Spade’s gloriously obnoxious delivery keeps the journey lively while Pacha’s stubborn generosity challenges Kuzco’s assumption that everyone exists to serve him. The crucial progress arrives when he risks losing the antidote to save his companion. He eventually revises those construction plans, too: friendship apparently accomplishes what this empire’s planning regulations never could. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Cropped A Christmas Carol 1999

13. Ebenezer Scrooge - A Christmas Carol (1999)

Patrick Stewart makes Scrooge’s early cruelty feel settled and habitual, the behavior of a man who has spent decades refusing to reconsider himself. This television adaptation sends the ghosts through that resistance with memories of lost affection, present suffering, and a future nobody will mourn. The eventual generosity matters because Stewart first establishes how thoroughly Scrooge has starved his own emotional life. Watching him discover the pleasure of helping people is almost embarrassingly intimate, as though kindness were a skill he’d forgotten. | © Hallmark Entertainment

Cropped american history x 1998

14. Derek Vinyard - American History X (1998)

Derek Vinyard’s change cannot undo the murders he committed or the racist movement he helped strengthen. Prison exposes the hypocrisy of his white supremacist allies, while his friendship with Lamont and Dr. Sweeney’s intervention challenge the beliefs beneath his violence. Edward Norton brings an urgent, frightened energy to Derek’s attempts to steer his younger brother away from that same path. The film’s tragedy lies partly in the delay: rejecting an ideology doesn’t stop the harm already spreading through a family. | © New Line Cinema

Cropped the rock 1996

15. General Francis Hummel - The Rock (1996)

Ed Harris gives The Rock an antagonist who looks increasingly sickened by the machinery of his own plan. Hummel occupies Alcatraz and threatens San Francisco with chemical weapons to demand compensation for the families of abandoned servicemen. When payment fails to arrive, he diverts a launched missile and admits the threat was a bluff. His mercenaries refuse to accept that distinction. Fatally wounded in the ensuing mutiny, he helps Goodspeed locate the remaining rocket, finally working to prevent the disaster he enabled. | © Hollywood Pictures

Cropped schindlers list 1993

16. Oskar Schindler - Schindler’s List (1993)

Money initially brings Oskar Schindler into the story: he sees occupied Poland as an opportunity and Jewish labor as a business advantage. Steven Spielberg follows the erosion of that calculation as Schindler confronts Nazi atrocities and increasingly uses his connections and fortune to protect his workers. Liam Neeson allows the charm and vanity to remain visible throughout. Saving lives demands the expenditure of resources he once accumulated for himself, giving his transformation a concrete cost beyond expressions of remorse. | © Universal Pictures

Cropped Terminator 2 Judgment Day 1991

17. T-800 - Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s familiar silhouette carries the memory of a relentless murderer, which makes his arrival as John Connor’s protector such an effective reversal. This T-800 is a separate machine, reprogrammed by the Resistance, but John still has to teach it why casually killing people is unacceptable. Their exchanges turn an intimidating weapon into an oddly endearing guardian. The final descent into molten steel completes that relationship with remarkable economy: one raised thumb gives the blockbuster its most painfully human goodbye. | © TriStar Pictures

Cropped beauty and the beast 1991

18. The Beast - Beauty and the Beast (1991)

The library is lovely, but letting Belle leave is the Beast’s most meaningful romantic gesture. Having imprisoned her in exchange for her father’s freedom, he must learn to respect a choice that could leave his own curse unbroken. Disney gives his improvement room to develop through awkward meals, wounded pride, and hesitant companionship. Releasing Belle to help Maurice proves that her happiness now matters beyond what she can offer him. The restored human appearance comes after the essential change has already happened. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Cropped the killer 1989

19. Ah Jong - The Killer (1989)

A nightclub shooting leaves singer Jennie with damaged eyesight, and the assassin responsible decides to pay for the surgery she needs. Unfortunately, Ah Jong’s professional qualifications make another killing his chosen fundraising strategy. John Woo draws the tragedy from that trap, with Chow Yun-fat playing a man whose conscience has awakened inside a life that offers no clean exit. His growing bond with the detective pursuing him gives the gun battles an emotional charge: these opponents increasingly recognize the same principles in each other. | © Film Workshop

Cropped Star Wars Episode VI Return of the Jedi 1983

20. Darth Vader - Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)

Luke puts down his weapon with a faith in his father that the evidence scarcely supports. Darth Vader has spent the trilogy enforcing the Emperor’s will, and even this reunion begins with an attempt to turn his son. Watching Palpatine torture Luke finally forces a different decision. Vader kills his master to save him, suffering fatal injuries in the process. Their brief farewell gives the enormous machinery of Star Wars a small, devastating center: a father asking to see his child without the mask. | © Lucasfilm Ltd.

Saving the day gets complicated when you’re the reason it needed saving. Movies where the villain becomes the hero ask us to root for characters we may have spent an hour hoping would lose—and sometimes, one desperate choice is enough to win us over. These 20 films explore redemption through reluctant alliances, guilty consciences, and sacrifices that actually cost something. Forgiving the former bad guy, though? That’s still up to the audience.
