About this gallery:

For this list, we have decided to focus only on movies where Sofía Vergara appears, no matter how small her role is. For this reason, don’t expect any of her performances in series, short films, or commercials. And remember, this list is subjective! If you think any movie is not in the right spot, share your opinion!

Cropped Madea Goes to Jail

10. Madea Goes to Jail (2009)

Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail might be best described as a comedy that’s more about volume than subtlety. Vergara plays a fiery woman named “Tanya,” but unfortunately, her role feels more like a one-note character in a parade of over-the-top antics. The movie is a chaotic blend of slapstick humor, family drama, and courtroom scenes that leave little room for anyone, including Vergara, to really shine.

But let’s be honest – if you’re watching a Madea movie, you know what you’re getting into. It's like a giant laugh track that’s slightly louder than your patience. Vergara does what she can with the material, but in the grand scheme of things, the film is really more about Perry’s comedic persona than anyone else’s. If nothing else, it’s an excellent reminder of how long we've been talking about Tyler Perry’s antics. | © Lionsgate

Cropped The Three Stooges

9. The Three Stooges (2012)

In The Three Stooges, Vergara’s role as a glamorous villain is undeniably fun, though it’s hard to say that anyone truly “won” in this slapstick reboot. The film leans heavily into crass, cartoonish humor, where Vergara is forced to flirt with a level of over-the-topness that feels as though it should be labeled "maximum ridiculousness."

Her character, Lydia, isn’t so much a well-rounded person as much as an exaggerated caricature that’s stuck in a sea of sight gags, pratfalls, and slapstick routines. The whole movie is, well, a farce – a nostalgic nod to an old-school format that’s kind of lost in today’s world of more sophisticated comedy. Vergara’s charm manages to surface here and there, but it’s buried beneath the relentless chaos. | © 20th Century Fox

Cropped Bent

8. Bent (2018)

Bent tries to be a slick, neo-noir thriller, but it’s more like a convoluted, forgettable ride that leaves you scratching your head. Vergara plays an important supporting role, but let's face it – this movie is so full of twists and turns, they’re almost dizzying, and not in a good way. As the film stumbles through its plotline, Vergara's presence is often overshadowed by the gritty, action-heavy storyline.

It’s one of those movies that feels like it's trying too hard to be cool but ends up being unintentionally amusing for all the wrong reasons. At least Vergara looks stunning in every scene, even if her character doesn’t get a whole lot of room to truly develop. With a cast that includes the likes of Karl Urban and Andy Garcia, you'd think it would be a knockout, but it winds up feeling more like a B-movie that got a little too ambitious. | © Lionsgate

Cropped Hot Pursuit

7. Hot Pursuit (2015)

Here’s a movie that’s about as breezy as a summer day and about as forgettable as one too. In Hot Pursuit, Vergara teams up with Reese Witherspoon for a buddy-cop comedy that’s about as predictable as they come. Vergara plays the fiery, larger-than-life wife of a criminal, while Witherspoon, playing a by-the-book cop, is paired with her for a cross-country chase. The premise is fun enough, but the humor falls flat more often than not.

Still, Vergara has no trouble playing the role of the high-maintenance, tough-talking woman to Witherspoon’s uptight straight-laced character. If you're in the mood for mindless, formulaic fun, Hot Pursuit delivers just that – but it doesn’t quite offer any more than that. Vergara, as always, brings a certain charm, but it’s the kind that can only carry a film so far. | © Warner Bros.

Cropped Wild Card

6. Wild Card (2015)

In Wild Card, Vergara gets to break away from her comedic roles and step into a more dramatic, action-packed world alongside Jason Statham. She plays a supporting role in a story about a Las Vegas bodyguard who gets pulled into a world of crime and danger. The film has all the right ingredients for a fast-paced thriller: action, crime, and a tough-as-nails protagonist. But Vergara’s character adds a bit of unexpected softness to the proceedings.

Her role doesn’t feel like it’s just there for the sake of sex appeal (though, yes, she does look stunning as usual); it’s more of a supporting figure that gives some depth to Statham’s tortured hero. While the movie doesn’t exactly redefine the genre, it’s a solid, watchable ride with Vergara playing against type. Not bad at all, but not exactly groundbreaking. | © Lionsgate

Cropped Bottom of the 9th

5. Bottom of the Ninth (2019)

Bottom of the Ninth is a sports drama that wants to tug at your heartstrings but ends up feeling more like an overly familiar underdog story. Vergara plays a pivotal role as the wife of a former baseball player (played by Joe Manganiello), who’s trying to make a comeback after spending years in prison. While the film has its emotional moments, it’s bogged down by cliché storytelling and a predictable plot.

Vergara does what she can with the material, but the role doesn’t exactly give her much room to stretch her comedic chops or really dig into anything that juicy. She’s as charming as ever, but Bottom of the Ninth ultimately feels like a game you’ve already seen played out. Great effort, but not quite a home run. | © Lionsgate

Cropped Machete Kills

4. Machete Kills (2013)

In Machete Kills, Vergara takes on the role of a wild, gun-toting villain with a very memorable accessory – her weaponized bra! The movie is a ridiculous, over-the-top action flick that embraces its own campiness with open arms. Vergara is fully in on the joke, delivering her lines with a wink and a nod to the audience. It’s the kind of role that’s more about embracing the madness of the story than acting chops, and Vergara does that flawlessly.

Unfortunately, Machete Kills sometimes goes so far into absurdity that it loses any real momentum. Still, Vergara’s commitment to playing a fierce femme fatale in this crazy, grindhouse-style film is enough to make it memorable, even if it's not quite good in the traditional sense. | © 20th Century Fox

Cropped Four Brothers

3. Four Brothers (2005)

In Four Brothers, Vergara brings some heat to the gritty, action-packed family drama. She plays the wife of one of the titular brothers (played by Mark Wahlberg), and while her role is on the smaller side, she absolutely holds her own against a powerhouse cast.

The film is a perfect blend of action, suspense, and emotional moments, and Vergara's performance is both fierce and tender, giving the movie a bit of a spark in its more dramatic moments. While she doesn’t have the screen time to carry the film, her chemistry with the other actors, especially in the familial scenes, adds heart to the gritty chaos of the story. It’s a great example of Vergara making the most out of her role, even if it’s not the movie’s central focus. | © Paramount Pictures

Cropped Fading Gigolo

2. Fading Gigolo (2013)

Fading Gigolo is one of those films where you can’t help but love the cast, even if the movie itself is a little... odd. Vergara plays the sexy, glamorous woman who hires a “gigolo” (played by John Turturro) for her personal pleasure, leading to a whole mess of unlikely romantic entanglements. The film’s tone is quirky and lighthearted, with Vergara leaning into her comedic timing and chemistry with Turturro.

It’s a surprisingly sweet and amusing film that doesn’t take itself too seriously – much like Vergara’s performance. She’s not just the hot, sultry woman here; she’s genuinely funny and adds a layer of depth to a role that could’ve easily been just eye candy. Fading Gigolo is an offbeat gem, with Vergara making the most of a surprisingly charming story. | © Millennium Films

Cropped Chef

1. Chef (2014)

Chef is easily one of Sofía Vergara’s best roles, not just because she’s paired with the incredible Jon Favreau, but because it allows her to show off her comedic range and undeniable charm. As the ex-wife of Favreau’s character, Vergara brings a warmth and playfulness to the film that helps ground its culinary adventures and emotional beats. She’s the heart of the movie’s subplot, giving her character a genuine depth that makes the film’s message of family, redemption, and passion all the more impactful.

Chef is a feel-good, charming indie film that’s full of heart – and Vergara’s performance is a big reason why it works so well. Her comedic timing is pitch-perfect, and she elevates every scene she’s in. It’s the role where Vergara truly shows she’s not just a comedic sidekick but a leading lady with an immense ability to connect with the audience. | © Open Road Films
