15 TV Shows With the Best Plot Twists

1-15

These shows take wild turns...

The Good Place

15. The Good Place

The Good Place delivered one of television's best comedic plot twists when it revealed that Eleanor and the other supposedly good people were actually in the Bad Place. This out-of-the-blue plot twist completely upended the show's premise after an entire season spent watching the characters try to figure out why their afterlife was malfunctioning. There are more twists in the show, such as the confirmation that no one had been to the Good Place in centuries and that the Good Place is full of purposeless residents. | © Universal Television / NBC

The Boys

14. The Boys

Known for its shock-and-awe storytelling, The Boys hits viewers with crazy twists as part of its goal to expose the darker side of its superhero world. One of its biggest early twists was the discovery that Homelander and Becca Butcher's son, Ryan, was actually alive and being raised in secret. Another massive turn was Queen Maeve's betrayal of Vought, and how she'd been secretly working as a mole. The show later delivered an even bigger revelation about Soldier Boy being Homelander's biological father. | © Amazon MGM Studios / Sony Pictures Television

Wanda Vision

13. WandaVision

WandaVision presented a whole lot of mystery through the style of a somewhat upbeat classic sitcom. One of its biggest twists was the revelation that Wanda had created the seemingly perfect Westview reality as a way of coping with her grief. The series also initially teased the return of Wanda's brother Pietro, only to reveal that the character was actually Ralph Bohner, a resident of Westview being manipulated by Agatha Harkness. The eventual reveal of Agatha as the true antagonist added another layer to the story. | © Marvel Studios

Game of Thrones

12. Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones made it a habit of making viewers believe that no character, no matter how popular, was truly safe. The Red Wedding is arguably one of the show's best twists. It resulted in the killing of many beloved characters, like Robb Stark and Catelyn Stark, who viewers had spent years following. GoT continued to deliver major surprises, including Jon Snow's true Targaryen heritage and the revelation that Hodor's tragic fate was connected to Bran's time-travel abilities. | © HBO Entertainment

Yellowjackets

11. Yellowjackets

Yellowjackets really lives up to the name of being a thriller show. It uses two timelines, the past and present, to slowly reveal what happened to a group of teenagers after their plane crashed in the wilderness. The series deliberately hides important details about the survivors' time in the wild, which allows for things to be gradually revealed. What happened to Jackie was particularly devastating because viewers initially expected her to survive alongside the other characters. Mari's fate was also quite tragic. The more the show went on, the more it hinted at dark secrets the characters had kept hidden. | © Lionsgate Television

Prison Break

10. Prison Break

Prison Break was packed with conspiracies and wild revelations, especially during the crime drama's first season. Michael Scofield's carefully planned prison escape initially appears to be the central story, but the conspiracy surrounding Lincoln Burrows' conviction quickly turns the story into something much larger. The discovery that Lincoln's supposed execution was connected to a powerful organization completely changed the stakes. Although the series eventually became more elaborate and complicated, it's these early twists that helped make it a nail-biter. | © 20th Century Fox Television

How to Get Away With Murder

9. How to Get Away With Murder

How to Get Away With Murder made cliffhangers and major reveals a big part of its storytelling. The legal drama show frequently jumped between timelines, which allowed it to hide crucial information about murders until the right moment. The show's first-season mystery surrounding Sam Keating and the death that occurs around Annalise's students was gripping. Throughout its run, new revelations about the characters' pasts, betrayals, and other crimes repeatedly changed the audience's understanding of earlier events. | © Shondaland / ABC Studios

Breaking Bad

8. Breaking Bad

Few shows are as consistently good at reshaping the audience's understanding of its characters as Breaking Bad. Vince Gilligan, the creator behind the crime drama, repeatedly does an immaculate job of developing every character, be it Walter White himself or Gus Fring. The show is full of shocking plot twists, such as Walt deliberately allowing Jane to die and the revelation that Walt was behind Brock's poisoning. It's unexpected turns like these which makes the show an incredible watch. | © Sony Pictures Television

The Haunting of Hill House

7. The Haunting of Hill House

The Haunting of Hill House is a supernatural horror show that didn't have a lot of game-changing plot twists, but just enough to keep you on your toes. Its most memorable twist comes when the identity of the mysterious Bent-Neck Lady is revealed. It was an older Nell, who was trapped in time. This revelation means many of Nell's earlier appearances are tragic clues rather than random encounters. The series also does a good job with its nonlinear story, which makes every discovery surprising. | © Paramount Television / Netflix

Orphan Black

6. Orphan Black

Orphan Black is somewhat notorious for being a show that's extremely deceptive. After Sarah Manning witnesses a woman who looks exactly like her die, she discovers that they are genetically identical clones. This revelation opens the door to an enormous conspiracy involving cloning experiments and dark corporate interests. The series expands on this twisted storyline throughout all of its five seasons, with the mid-season reveal of Project Castor being a major twist too. | © Temple Street Productions

Mr Robot

5. Mr. Robot

Mr. Robot regularly challenged people to question whether they could trust what they were seeing. The biggest early twist was the revelation that Mr. Robot was actually a manifestation of Elliot's father, rather than an independent person. Later, the show revealed that Elliot had been hiding disturbing aspects of his past, which changed how viewers understood his childhood and personality. These twists and turns often recontextualized entire stretches of the series' story and made it such an engaging show. | ©

Severance

4. Severance

Severance has become one of TV's best examples of a slow-burn science fiction show. Its biggest twists fundamentally change everything about what viewers think is happening inside Lumon Industries. The revelation that Helly is actually Helena Eagan completely reframes who she actually is and what her motives are. The first season's finale then delivers another major twist when the "overtime contingency" allows the severed employees to briefly experience their outside lives, which reveals shocking details about Mark, Helly, and Irving. The revelations only continue to build from there, with the second season raising even bigger questions and twists about the company's true intentions. | © Apple Studios

Dark

3. Dark

Dark is practically built around plot twists, with its story involving time travel, convoluted family connections, and alternate realities. The revelation that Mikkel Nielsen had traveled back in time and eventually became Michael Kahnwald completely changed the relationship between several central characters. From that point onwards, the series kept expanding this intricate web, and it eventually revealed an alternate universe and showed how the two realities were connected. Dark is certainly a show that you'd need to watch again in order to understand all the curveballs. | © Wiedemann & Berg Television / Netflix

Westworld

2. Westworld

Westworld is so packed with twists that it deserves special attention for how aggressively it plays with a lot of its audience's expectations. Beyond Bernard's identity, the series reveals that characters such as William and the Man in Black are connected across different points in time. The discovery that Dolores' journey has been manipulated by the park's creators also changes the apparent meaning of her quest for freedom. There are a bunch of other mysteries surrounding other characters, too, which makes keeping track of things challenging at times. | © Warner Bros. Television

Lost

1. Lost

Lost built much of its gripping science fiction identity around mysteries, flashbacks, and shocking revelations. One of its biggest twists came at the end of the first season, when the survivors discovered the mysterious hatch and realized that the island's secrets were much bigger than they initially thought. The show continued to introduce increasingly strange developments, including the revelation that certain characters' flashbacks were actually flash-forwards. Season three's finale, where Jack Shephard says "We have to go back", completely changed everything and, to this day, remains one of TV's most memorable cliffhangers. | © Bad Robot / ABC Studios
