Dobby levitates a pudding and the Ministry immediately blames Harry because magic occurred near an underage wizard. Harry forgetting an unopened Christmas present is unfortunate but believable; Sirius forgetting the communication device he specifically gave Harry is harder work. When Harry risks using Umbridge’s fireplace to contact Grimmauld Place, Sirius never asks why they are not speaking through the private two-way mirror. Harry later believes Voldemort’s false vision, fails to reach his godfather and races to the Ministry, where Sirius is killed. Sirius is imprisoned without a trial despite the wizarding world possessing Veritaserum, Pensieve memories and Prior Incantato, which reveals a wand’s recent spells. None provides flawless evidence: truth potion can be resisted, memories can be altered and wands can change hands.
