Love, Actually? 15 Movie Romances That Are Really Stalker Stories

1-15

Theres Something About Mary 1998

15. There’s Something About Mary (1998)

Mary in There’s Something About Mary is not caught in a love triangle so much as hosting a stalker convention. Ted hires investigator Pat Healy to find her; Healy spies on Mary, steals details about her ideal man and uses them to seduce her himself. Another admirer injures his back to become her patient, while an ex inspired a restraining order. Even Ted stages an accidental reunion instead of admitting how he found her. The Farrelly brothers know these men are creeps, but only one gets the romantic ending—and somehow it is still Ted. | © 20th Century Fox

Love Actually 2003

14. Love Actually (2003)

Mark spends much of Love Actually supposedly keeping his distance from Juliet because she married his best friend, yet his wedding video consists almost entirely of lingering close-ups of her face. When Juliet discovers the footage, he responds by arriving at her home on Christmas Eve and silently declaring his love with cue cards while her husband sits inside. A quick kiss and a swelling score send him away looking noble rather than alarming. Even writer-director Richard Curtis has since conceded the scene is rather weird, which feels like an overdue Christmas miracle. | © Universal Pictures

Superman Returns 2006

13. Superman Returns (2006)

Returning after five years without saying goodbye, Superman discovers that Lois Lane has built a life with Richard White and is raising a young son. His response in Superman Returns is not a respectful text. He hovers outside their home at night and uses his super-hearing to eavesdrop on a private family conversation, because apparently Kryptonian powers include premium access to your ex’s living room. The movie frames his intrusion as lonely heartbreak, but when a former boyfriend can float beyond the windows and hear whispers through walls, changing the locks is mostly decorative. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

The Graduate 1967

12. The Graduate (1967)

The Graduate sends Elaine back to Berkeley after she learns about Benjamin’s affair with her mother and throws him out. Benjamin follows her north, rents a room nearby, waits around campus and announces that they should marry despite receiving nothing resembling an invitation. He eventually tracks down her wedding and pounds on the church glass until she runs away with him. The famous final bus ride supplies the necessary reality check: once the adrenaline fades, both faces suggest they may have just mistaken relentless pursuit for an actual plan. | © Embassy Pictures

Cropped sleepless in seattle

11. Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

Annie falls for Sam in Sleepless in Seattle after hearing him discuss his late wife on the radio, which would be sweet if she stopped at mailing a letter. Instead, the engaged reporter researches him through a detective agency, flies across the country on a work pretext, secretly watches him playing with his son and visits his houseboat. Sam and Annie have exchanged exactly one awkward “hello” before destiny summons them to the Empire State Building. Nora Ephron makes the fantasy irresistible; remove Manhattan at night, however, and this becomes an impressively expensive background check. | © TriStar Pictures

Addicted to Love 1997

10. Addicted to Love (1997)

Sam responds to being dumped by breaking into an abandoned building opposite his ex-girlfriend’s apartment and converting his astronomy equipment into a surveillance system. Addicted to Love then sends in Maggie, who wants revenge on the man now dating Sam’s ex and arrives with microphones, photography gear and an appetite for sabotage. Together they eavesdrop, infiltrate a restaurant and unleash cockroaches before realizing their binoculars have pointed them toward each other. The black comedy knows its leads are behaving terribly, but “two stalkers discover love while monitoring another couple” remains one spectacularly deranged meet-cute. | © Warner Bros.

All About Steve 2009

9. All About Steve (2009)

All About Steve gives Mary one polite escape line after a disastrous blind date, and she interprets it as proof that Steve wants her beside him. She creates an obsessive crossword about him, loses her job and begins chasing his television news crew from assignment to assignment across the country. Sandra Bullock plays the pursuit at maximum comic volume, while Steve reacts with the understandable panic of a man who cannot file a restraining order fast enough. At least the ending openly admits that stalking someone is a fairly reliable sign they are not yours. | © 20th Century Fox

Cropped The Notebook

8. The Notebook (2004)

Noah and Allie eventually build a real, mutual love in The Notebook, but their first encounter belongs in a carnival safety report. Seeing her on a Ferris wheel with another boy, Noah climbs onto the moving ride, dangles from the structure and threatens to let go unless she agrees to date him. Allie says yes because the alternative appears to be watching a stranger fall to his death. Rain-soaked kisses later soften the memory, yet emotional blackmail at several stories above ground is less a grand gesture than a hostage negotiation with excellent cheekbones. | © New Line Cinema

Youve Got Mail 1998

7. You’ve Got Mail (1998)

You’ve Got Mail lets Joe Fox discover that his beloved anonymous pen pal is Kathleen Kelly, the independent bookseller his corporate chain is driving out of business. Kathleen remains clueless, allowing Joe to keep writing as “NY152” while he befriends her in person and uses privileged knowledge to become exactly the confidant she needs. Tom Hanks can make information warfare look cuddly, but Joe controls every version of their relationship while Kathleen receives only the parts he chooses to reveal. Dial-up internet was slow; its catfishing apparently moved at terrifying efficiency. | © Warner Bros. Pictures

Cropped About Time 2013

6. About Time (2013)

Tim genuinely connects with Mary during a dinner in complete darkness in About Time, only to erase their meeting when he changes the past for somebody else. Armed with memories Mary no longer possesses, he waits at a Kate Moss exhibition she once mentioned, learns when she met her current boyfriend and travels back again to arrive first. He even repeats their first night together until his performance earns the desired review. Mary experiences spontaneous chemistry; Tim is effectively save-scumming the courtship with a private strategy guide she never agreed to write. | © Universal Pictures

Cropped groundhog day 1993

5. Groundhog Day (1993)

Phil Connors initially treats the time loop in Groundhog Day as unlimited access to Rita’s personal data. Each rejection teaches him another preference, memory or weakness, which he carries into the next reset while she remembers none of their previous conversations. He engineers her favorite drink, quotes French poetry and assembles a counterfeit perfect man, earning repeated slaps when the performance inevitably cracks. Crucially, the movie rejects this strategy: Phil escapes only after abandoning manipulation and becoming genuinely generous. Its romance works, but first it makes him complete years of supernatural creep training. | © Columbia Pictures

Cropped fifty shades of grey 2015

4. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)

The red room in Fifty Shades of Grey attracts most of the attention, but Christian Grey’s behavior outside it raises the louder alarms. He appears unannounced at Ana’s workplace, tracks her phone to a bar, turns up during her visit to Georgia and replaces her car without asking. None of that belongs to negotiated BDSM; it is surveillance and control wearing an expensive suit. Jamie Dornan’s stare and a glossy soundtrack are meant to suggest dangerous sophistication, although Christian often resembles a billionaire who purchased the premium stalking package and had his legal department rename it romance. | © Universal Pictures

Passengers 2016

3. Passengers (2016)

Jim wakes ninety years early aboard a colony ship in Passengers, spends a year alone and becomes fixated on Aurora while she remains unconscious in her pod. He watches her recorded profile, debates the morality of ruining her future, then deliberately revives her and pretends the machine malfunctioned. Their romance develops because he has secretly made himself the only available man in her universe. Aurora eventually learns the truth and is rightly horrified, but a shared rescue mission steers the film toward forgiveness. Space may be infinite; her dating pool contains one kidnapper. | © Columbia Pictures

Twilight 2008

2. Twilight (2008)

Twilight does not merely have Edward Cullen notice Bella across a crowded cafeteria. He follows her to Port Angeles, admits that he has been entering her bedroom and reveals that he has watched her sleep for months—all before their relationship has properly begun. Being a century-old vampire frozen in a teenager’s body only makes the situation harder to explain to a judge. Bella interprets the constant surveillance as protection, while blue lighting and Robert Pattinson’s anguished stare sell trespassing as supernatural devotion. Apparently immortality offers plenty of time, but no respect for doors. | © Summit Entertainment

Say Anything 1989

1. Say Anything... (1989)

Cinema sold Lloyd Dobler’s boombox serenade in Say Anything... as the gold standard for wounded romantics everywhere. The small complication: Diane has ended their relationship, stopped returning his calls and asked for space, so Lloyd appears beneath her bedroom window at dawn blasting the song linked to their first night together. John Cusack’s bruised expression does heroic work, but try that gesture without a Peter Gabriel soundtrack and somebody is calling security. Lloyd is harmless compared with the people ahead, though his boundary-testing encore wrote a dangerous rulebook. | © 20th Century Fox

1-15

A swelling score can make almost anything look romantic—even following someone home, sabotaging their relationships, or treating “no” as the start of a negotiation. Hollywood has spent decades rewarding characters whose grand gestures would sound far less charming in a police report. Take away the movie-star chemistry and soft lighting, and some of cinema’s most famous couples begin to resemble a restraining order waiting to happen. These 15 movie romances prove that the line between devoted lover and determined stalker is often only one montage wide.
