15 Times Actors Played Movie Directors

1-15

Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock

1. Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock — Hitchcock (2012)

Under the prosthetics and familiar silhouette, Anthony Hopkins gives Alfred Hitchcock a decidedly bruisable ego. Hitchcock follows the making of Psycho, but its most revealing relationship is between the director and his wife and collaborator, Alma Reville, played by Helen Mirren. Hopkins leans into the dry humor and insecurity of a filmmaker gambling on an uncomfortable idea. Watching this supposed master of manipulation need reassurance is considerably more interesting than another round of celebrity impersonation. | © The Montecito Picture Company

Johnny Depp as Ed Wood Ed Wood 1994

2. Johnny Depp as Ed Wood — Ed Wood (1994)

Talent is negotiable; enthusiasm apparently isn’t. Johnny Depp plays Ed Wood with the unstoppable confidence of a man who sees a masterpiece where everyone else sees cardboard scenery. Tim Burton’s affectionate biopic follows the filmmaker’s shoestring productions and friendship with Bela Lugosi, played by Martin Landau. Depp makes Wood’s optimism funny without treating his affection for filmmaking as a joke. You might question every decision this director makes and still volunteer to hold the microphone. | © Touchstone Pictures

Vincent D Onofrio as Orson Welles Ed Wood 1994

3. Vincent D’Onofrio as Orson Welles — Ed Wood (1994)

Imagine meeting your filmmaking idol and discovering that he has financing problems, too. Vincent D’Onofrio appears as Orson Welles in Ed Wood, lending imposing presence to a fictional barroom encounter that gives Johnny Depp’s struggling director a much-needed boost. There’s a clever bit of movie trickery involved: Maurice LaMarche supplies Welles’s voice. D’Onofrio provides the physical resemblance and relaxed authority, making this brief appearance feel enormous to the awestruck man sitting across from him. | © Touchstone Pictures

Leonardo Di Caprio as Howard Hughes The Aviator 2004

4. Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes — The Aviator (2004)

Getting the right clouds into a shot becomes an expensive obsession when Howard Hughes directs Hell’s Angels. Leonardo DiCaprio attacks those filmmaking sequences with restless energy, making Hughes seem capable of personally bullying the sky into cooperating. Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator also explores his aviation career and deteriorating mental health, but the movie set establishes his appetite for control. DiCaprio lets the excitement of impossible ambition coexist with the distress that eventually makes everyday life unbearable. | © Miramax Films

Robert Downey Jr as Charlie Chaplin Chaplin 1992

5. Robert Downey Jr. as Charlie Chaplin — Chaplin (1992)

The bowler hat is recognizable. Making the person underneath it convincing takes rather more work. Robert Downey Jr. recreates Charlie Chaplin’s physical comedy while also portraying the ambitious filmmaker who wanted authority over his own pictures. Richard Attenborough’s Chaplin covers an enormous amount of personal and professional history, yet Downey keeps the performance nimble. His expressive movement supplies the immediate pleasure; the calculation behind that apparently effortless screen persona gives the portrayal its substance. | © Carolco Pictures

Ben Kingsley as Georges Méliès Hugo 2011

6. Ben Kingsley as Georges Méliès — Hugo (2011)

Behind a Paris railway station’s toy counter sits a man who once sent audiences to the moon. Ben Kingsley initially plays Georges Méliès as someone determined to keep wonder out of his life, which gives Hugo its emotional mystery. As his filmmaking past emerges, that prickly reserve becomes heartbreaking. Martin Scorsese surrounds him with elaborate visual spectacle, but Kingsley makes the strongest argument for preserving movies simply by showing how much being forgotten can hurt. | © GK Films

James Franco as Tommy Wiseau The Disaster Artist 2017

7. James Franco as Tommy Wiseau — The Disaster Artist (2017)

That accent could swallow an entire performance. James Franco certainly embraces Tommy Wiseau’s peculiar delivery in The Disaster Artist, but he also makes his hunger for friendship and recognition central to the character. Playing Wiseau while directing the film himself, Franco recreates the troubled production of The Room alongside Dave Franco as Greg Sestero. The comedy comes from spectacularly questionable decisions; the discomfort arrives when Tommy treats the people helping him as threats to his dream. | © A24

Wesley Snipes as D Urville Martin Dolemite Is My Name 2019

8. Wesley Snipes as D’Urville Martin — Dolemite Is My Name (2019)

Wesley Snipes can make an entrance look like a formal complaint. As actor and director D’Urville Martin in Dolemite Is My Name, he brings magnificent disdain to Rudy Ray Moore’s determinedly scrappy production. Eddie Murphy supplies the entrepreneurial enthusiasm, while Snipes plays a filmmaker who considers the whole operation beneath him. His languid delivery and incredulous reactions give their clashes extra bite: everyone else is trying to make a movie, and he’s trying to preserve his dignity. | © Davis Entertainment

Ian Mc Kellen as James Whale Gods and Monsters 1998

9. Ian McKellen as James Whale — Gods and Monsters (1998)

Retirement offers James Whale little peace in Gods and Monsters. Ian McKellen portrays the Frankenstein director as witty, lonely, and increasingly troubled by memories following a stroke. His relationship with a gardener played by Brendan Fraser anchors this fictionalized account of Whale’s later life. McKellen allows flirtation, cruelty, and vulnerability to share the same conversation. The old Hollywood anecdotes are entertaining, but watching him use charm to postpone an uncomfortable moment is what really stings. | © Regent Entertainment

Liev Schreiber as Orson Welles RKO 281 1999

10. Liev Schreiber as Orson Welles — RKO 281 (1999)

Making Citizen Kane sounds difficult enough without antagonizing a newspaper magnate who has the resources to fight back. In HBO’s RKO 281, Liev Schreiber plays Orson Welles as a young filmmaker whose confidence helps start a battle he cannot entirely control. The dramatization follows the production and William Randolph Hearst’s opposition, giving Schreiber room to mix creative conviction with arrogance. His Welles believes the film must exist; persuading everyone else to survive the consequences requires considerably more effort. | © HBO Pictures

Tom Burke as Orson Welles Mank 2020

11. Tom Burke as Orson Welles — Mank (2020)

Tom Burke has limited screen time in Mank, yet his Orson Welles exerts pressure even from the other end of a telephone. David Fincher centers the story on screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, leaving Burke to suggest the director’s authority through his voice, confidence, and eventual confrontation over credit. This is the film’s pointed interpretation of a disputed creative relationship. Burke makes Welles charming enough to command attention and imperious enough to make that attention feel compulsory. | © Netflix

Willem Dafoe as Pier Paolo Pasolini Pasolini 2014

12. Willem Dafoe as Pier Paolo Pasolini — Pasolini (2014)

Willem Dafoe’s angular features make the resemblance to Pier Paolo Pasolini immediately striking, but his quiet concentration sustains Pasolini. Abel Ferrara imagines the Italian filmmaker’s final day through family visits, conversations, and glimpses of unfinished creative work. Instead of performing a permanent state of artistic outrage, Dafoe gives him the everyday composure of someone whose mind remains busy. That restraint lends weight to the film’s tragedy: we’re watching a working artist who still has things to say. | © Capricci Films

Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier My Week with Marilyn 2011

13. Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier — My Week with Marilyn (2011)

Directing Marilyn Monroe is testing every scrap of Laurence Olivier’s patience in My Week with Marilyn, and Kenneth Branagh makes the strain wonderfully visible. During the production of The Prince and the Showgirl, his Olivier struggles to reconcile disciplined technique with his leading lady’s less predictable approach. Branagh finds comedy in the wounded authority, but also admiration beneath the irritation. Here is an accomplished actor-director discovering that he cannot simply issue instructions and manufacture someone else’s screen magnetism. | © Trademark Films

Toby Jones as Alfred Hitchcock The Girl 2012

14. Toby Jones as Alfred Hitchcock — The Girl (2012)

The familiar Hitchcock mannerisms become unsettling in Toby Jones’s performance for The Girl. This HBO and BBC television film dramatizes Tippi Hedren’s account of harassment and coercion during the making of The Birds and Marnie, with Sienna Miller playing the actress. Jones keeps the director’s cultivated composure close to his resentment, making professional authority feel oppressive. The result is deliberately uncomfortable: that measured voice offers little reassurance when the person using it also holds power over your career. | © HBO Films / BBC

David Lynch as John Ford The Fabelmans 2022

15. David Lynch as John Ford — The Fabelmans (2022)

David Lynch needs only a brief scene to make John Ford feel like someone whose office you should have knocked harder before entering. In The Fabelmans, his gruff encounter with aspiring filmmaker Sammy delivers a lesson about horizon placement with absolutely no interest in gentle encouragement. There’s delicious casting logic in Steven Spielberg directing one distinctive filmmaker as another. Lynch makes the exchange brusque, funny, and oddly generous, then sends the young man on his way. | © Amblin Entertainment

Actors spend their careers taking directions, but playing the person who usually gives them requires a different kind of homework. How do you make filmmaking interesting to watch without spending two hours shouting “Action!”? These 15 performances put movie directors in front of the camera, where their ambitions, egos, and creative headaches become somebody else’s material. Naturally, Hollywood has plenty to say about itself.
