15 Best Open-World Games That Never Really End

1-15

Cropped Mount Blade II Bannerlord

15. Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord (2022)

Calradia carries on with or without its would-be conqueror, producing wars, marriages, rebellions, trade disputes, and wonderfully petty noble grudges in real time. Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord lets players serve as mercenaries, raise armies, establish caravans, besiege castles, build a dynasty, or spend several years selling mules at suspiciously favorable prices. Kingdoms rise and collapse while characters age, die, and pass their legacy to heirs. No victory screen can permanently tame a continent designed to manufacture its next political disaster. | © TaleWorlds Entertainment

Fallout 76

14. Fallout 76 (2018)

Fallout 76 has spent years rebuilding itself in public, which is fitting for a game about assembling civilization from radioactive scrap. Appalachia now runs on public events, seasonal rewards, expeditions, Daily Ops, legendary gear hunts, and C.A.M.P. construction elaborate enough to embarrass actual architects. Even after the quests thin out, another build, event, or suspiciously generous player keeps the routine moving. Its disastrous launch became merely the prologue to a much stranger success story. | © Bethesda Game Studios

Red Dead Redemption 2

13. Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)

Arthur Morgan’s story reaches a firm and unforgettable conclusion, yet Red Dead Redemption 2 refuses to release its grip afterward. The epilogue opens another chapter, while hunting requests, treasure maps, challenges, stranger encounters, legendary animals, and a demanding compendium can consume dozens of additional hours. Red Dead Online expands the frontier further for anyone willing to make their own trouble. Completionists may eventually reach 100%, but the landscape still feels capable of producing one more story on the ride home. | © Rockstar Games

The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim

12. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)

Skyrim’s most reliable magic trick is turning a planned thirty-minute visit into another full character build. Radiant quests, faction paths, hidden dungeons, homes, crafting systems, and three major add-ons already made the province absurdly replayable before the modding community got involved. Creations and fan-made expansions can replace combat, rewrite cities, add entire regions, or simply improve cabbage physics. A new save usually begins with noble intentions and ends, inevitably, with another stealth archer crouching behind a rock. | © Bethesda Game Studios

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

11. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)

Geralt can technically retire once the main story and expansions are finished, although The Witcher 3 gives him enough unfinished business to postpone that pension indefinitely. Monster contracts, Gwent opponents, branching quests, treasure hunts, alternate decisions, New Game Plus, and the enormous Blood and Wine expansion reward obsessive wandering. More than a decade after launch, CD Projekt Red even announced another expansion, an almost comically appropriate development. The Continent apparently has no shortage of monsters, political disasters, or villagers misplacing frying pans. | © CD Projekt Red

Grand Theft Auto V

10. Grand Theft Auto V (2013)

Los Santos stopped being a setting years ago and became a delivery system for increasingly ridiculous criminal ambitions. Grand Theft Auto V offers a substantial three-protagonist campaign, but GTA Online is the real bottomless pit: heists, businesses, races, properties, custom jobs, vehicles, roleplay servers, and enough currencies to require light accounting experience. Every return reveals another expensive machine nobody needs but everybody immediately wants. Rockstar built a city where finishing the story merely frees up more time for professional nonsense. | © Rockstar North

No Mans Sky

9. No Man's Sky (2016)

A procedurally generated galaxy is already a fairly aggressive answer to anyone asking how long a game lasts. No Man’s Sky piles base building, freighters, settlements, trading, piracy, exploration, multiplayer missions, survival modes, and time-limited Expeditions onto a universe designed to keep producing new horizons. Hello Games has also spent years adding major free updates, repeatedly transforming systems that once looked finished. Reaching the galactic center provides direction, not closure; another strange planet is always waiting to ruin the evening’s schedule. | © Hello Games

Project Zomboid

8. Project Zomboid (2013)

“This is how you died” is not merely Project Zomboid’s introduction; it is the closest thing the game has to an ending. Before that inevitable obituary, survivors can barricade houses, repair vehicles, grow food, master professions, explore an expanding Kentucky map, and discover that one forgotten window has invalidated forty careful hours. Custom sandbox settings, multiplayer servers, extensive mods, and continuing updates stretch the apocalypse far beyond a conventional campaign. Survival has no final boss here—only increasingly embarrassing ways to become lunch. | © The Indie Stone

Elite Dangerous

7. Elite Dangerous (2014)

Elite Dangerous measures freedom on an astronomical scale, then hands over a ship and offers remarkably little concern for your calendar. Pilots can trade, mine, explore, fight, smuggle, chart distant systems, influence factions, join community expeditions, or land and continue on foot through Odyssey. The Milky Way is too vast for its players to exhaust in any practical sense, while updates and an evolving shared narrative keep altering its priorities. Space remains beautiful, hostile, and extremely good at turning errands into careers. | © Frontier Developments

Sea of Thieves

6. Sea of Thieves (2018)

A treasure map in Sea of Thieves is less a mission than permission for several unrelated disasters to occur. The voyage may involve skeleton forts, sea monsters, Tall Tales, rival crews, buried loot, emissary progression, or an ally who accidentally sets the ship on fire while cooking. Seasonal systems keep supplying new objectives, but unpredictable players provide the real renewable content. Rare’s pirate sandbox has no conventional finish line because the best sessions end as stories, usually told with suspicious omissions about who sank first. | © Rare

World of Warcraft

5. World of Warcraft (2004)

World of Warcraft has survived long enough for its earliest heroes to develop lower-back problems. Expansions add continents, campaigns, raids, dungeons, systems, and fresh gear ladders that make yesterday’s prized equipment look suddenly unemployed. Outside the current endgame, Azeroth contains decades of quests, mounts, pets, professions, achievements, transmogs, PvP, alternate characters, and older raids waiting to be farmed. The villain may be defeated, but another patch soon arrives carrying a larger health bar and several new reputations to grind. | © Blizzard Entertainment

Cropped Eve Online

4. EVE Online (2003)

EVE Online can turn a shipment of minerals into an economic crisis, a diplomatic incident, and a four-hour emergency meeting. New Eden runs on player corporations, markets, industry, espionage, territorial warfare, piracy, exploration, and grudges preserved with museum-level care. CCP supplies expansions and mechanical changes, but the community generates the conflicts that make the universe feel permanently unfinished. Victory never settles much; it merely rearranges the map, creates fresh enemies, and gives someone material for an alarmingly detailed spreadsheet. | © CCP Games

Final Fantasy XIV

3. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (2013)

One character can become every combat, crafting, and gathering job in Final Fantasy XIV, a design decision that quietly eliminates the need to ever leave. The main scenario alone spans multiple expansions, while raids, trials, relic weapons, housing, island activities, glamour, minions, mounts, Gold Saucer distractions, and social communities create entirely separate lives around it. Reaching the latest credits only means joining everyone else at the current edge of Eorzea. Even inventory management eventually develops its own endgame. | © Square Enix

Cropped Kenshi

2. Kenshi (2018)

Kenshi begins by informing players, through every nearby bandit and carnivorous animal, that they are not remotely important. There is no central quest demanding completion: characters can trade, steal, explore, recruit a squad, build settlements, influence factions, become enslaved, or lose several limbs while attempting any of the above. Defeats often create better stories than victories, since battered survivors grow stronger by enduring the world’s abuse. A playthrough ends only when the player abandons it—or when the wasteland finally runs out of usable body parts. | © Lo-Fi Games

Minecraft

1. Minecraft (2011)

Killing the Ender Dragon sounds conclusive until Minecraft calmly returns the player to a world still waiting to be dismantled and rebuilt. Survival, Creative mode, redstone engineering, enormous construction projects, multiplayer servers, custom maps, mods, and regular game drops make the official ending feel more like a ceremonial checkpoint. Its procedural terrain supplies raw possibility; imagination determines the actual lifespan. A humble dirt shelter can eventually become a mechanical empire, provided nobody asks how many real evenings disappeared during construction. | © Mojang Studios

1-15

The credits in these games are less of an ending than a brief administrative pause. One minute the story is over; the next, you are hunting obscure gear, installing 200 mods, starting a new build, or discovering that an unmarked cave has somehow stolen your entire evening. Their worlds survive long after the central plot runs out of dialogue, sustained by exploration, emergent chaos, expansions, and the dangerous thought that you will stop after “one last quest.” These are the best open-world games for players who consider closure wildly overrated.
