The 10 Worst Endings In Video Game History

1-10

Elden Ring 2022 cropped processed by imagy

10. Elden Ring (2022)

After so much buildup, the finish feels oddly small. The Lands Between are stuffed with broken dynasties, demigods, and one colossal sense of myth, yet Elden Ring often cashes that out in remarkably brief final scenes. Most of its endings are variations on the Elden Lord outcome, so the last minutes can blur together instead of exploding into a payoff worthy of the journey. Beating Radagon and the Elden Beast should feel like the world itself cracking open; instead, the game mostly lowers its voice and heads for the credits. Ranni’s path and the Frenzied Flame at least leave a stronger imprint, but the broader finale still lands softer than a game this vast probably should. | © Bandai Namco Entertainment

Worst Endings In Video Game History Halo 2

9. Halo 2 (2004)

There is a fine line between a sequel hook and a non-ending, and Halo 2 stomps right over it. The campaign spends hours widening the war, deepening the Arbiter arc, and pushing Master Chief toward what feels like a genuine final confrontation. Then the famous “finishing this fight” moment arrives and the credits hit so fast it feels like the game just walked out of the room. What survives is not closure but momentum frozen in place. Bungie later spoke openly about the rushed finish, and players felt that abruptness immediately: the ending was memorable, sure, but mostly because it stopped where another act clearly should have begun. | © Microsoft Game Studios

Cropped Mass Effect 3

8. Mass Effect 3 (2012)

The anger around Mass Effect 3 was never only about red, blue, and green. What made the ending sting was that a trilogy built on personal choices, squad loyalty, and galaxy-shaping consequences suddenly narrowed into a final stretch many players saw as abstract and emotionally underfed. After years of decisions that seemed to matter, the climax felt detached from the relationships that made the series special in the first place. The last conversation on the Citadel plays like a cosmic philosophy exam arriving at the worst possible moment. BioWare would not have released the Extended Cut so quickly if the original landing had not clearly hit a nerve. | © Electronic Arts

Worst Endings In Video Game History Dark Souls

7. Dark Souls (2011)

Nobody goes to Dark Souls looking for a tidy bow, and that is part of its power. Still, there is a reason the ending leaves some players more hollow than haunted. After an exhausting trek through Lordran and one of the best final boss fights of its era, the choice you receive is stark almost to the point of emotional starvation: link the fire or walk away. Those ideas are rich, but the actual presentation is so spare that the credits can feel less like catharsis and more like depletion. For fans, that restraint is elegant. For everyone else, the finale can seem like it is withholding the one last shiver of feeling the journey had earned. | © Bandai Namco Entertainment

Cropped Alan Wake

6. Alan Wake (2010)

A story built like episodic television probably thought it could get away with one more cliffhanger, and Alan Wake absolutely tried. The mood is immaculate, the final line is legendary, and the image of Alan trapped in the Dark Place has real pulp-horror bite. The problem is that the ending behaves more like a promise than a conclusion. Alice is safe, yes, but the central mystery is still yawning open, major questions are still dangling, and the whole thing cuts off right when the story should be breathing out. Even people who love the game tend to admit the original finish felt less like closure than an intermission with the lights left off. | © Microsoft Game Studios

Far Cry 2 ending

5. Far Cry 2 (2008)

Hopelessness can be powerful, but only when the path to it feels earned. What makes the closing stretch of Far Cry 2 so divisive is how suddenly it shoves the player into a sacrificial endgame after spending most of the story reveling in moral rot and chaos. Buddies turn on you, the country remains a ruin, and the final choice drives toward self-destruction in a way that feels more imposed than inevitable. Ubisoft was clearly reaching for something bleak and serious, and there is an ambition to that which deserves credit. Even so, the ending never quite turns despair into tragedy. It mostly leaves behind the sensation that the game found a grim note and mistook it for a satisfying last word. | © Ubisoft

Worst Endings In Video Game History Crysis

4. Crysis (2007)

For most of its running time, Crysis feels enormous, restless, and technologically years ahead of itself. Then the finale arrives and starts sounding less like a resolution than the first page of the sequel. The carrier battle has scale, the alien assault has spectacle, and the final images are certainly loud enough, but what sticks is the abrupt pivot back toward the island once Prophet’s signal comes through. That turn is classic cliffhanger material: exciting in the moment, oddly incomplete the second the credits roll. A game famous for going big needed a bigger sense of arrival than “turn around, we’re not done here yet.” | © Electronic Arts

Worst Endings In Video Game History Dr Mario

3. Dr. Mario (1990)

Not every terrible ending is a disaster. Sometimes it is just comically underwhelming, which is what makes Dr. Mario such a funny inclusion on a list like this. Clear the right milestone and the game gives you a tiny congratulatory scene, cute enough in the moment but nowhere near the kind of payoff players tend to imagine after clawing through increasingly vicious virus patterns. That approach made perfect sense for a puzzle game born from arcade logic, yet it also means the ending barely feels like an ending at all. You win, you get a quick visual pat on the back, and the whole thing moves on as if nothing especially impressive just happened. | © Nintendo

Prince of Persia 2008

2. Prince of Persia (2008)

What hurts here is not that the finale is emotionless. Prince of Persia swings hard at romance, grief, and obsession, which is exactly why its last turn frustrates so many people. Elika’s sacrifice lands with real weight, and for a brief stretch the game seems willing to end on something mournful and honest. Then the Prince pushes past that pain, undoes the sacrifice, and tears apart the meaning of everything the story had just asked you to accept. It is bold, selfish, and tragic in a way that fits his character, but that does not make it satisfying. The closing minutes leave behind less sorrow than narrative whiplash, which is why the ending stuck in people’s heads for all the wrong reasons. | © Ubisoft

Worst Endings In Video Game History Fallout 3

1. Fallout 3 (2008)

The original ending of Fallout 3 managed a rare trick: it turned a dramatic sacrifice into an argument with the player. Marching into Project Purity is framed as noble and unavoidable, yet the game can put radiation-immune allies right beside you and still pretend there is no smarter option on the table. That logic gap is so huge it swallows the intended emotion whole. Instead of thinking about James, the Capital Wasteland, or the weight of the journey, players are left wondering why the script is forcing them to ignore the obvious fix. Broken Steel softened the damage later, but by then the base-game finale had already earned its place as one of gaming’s most ridiculed endings. | © Bethesda Softworks

1-10

A bad ending does not just miss the landing; it can wreck the entire memory of a game. Players will forgive stiff dialogue, recycled missions, even a bloated middle, but the final scene is where everything gets judged at once. The worst video game endings have a way of making dozens of hours feel suddenly wasted.

Years later, gamers still argue about the same train wrecks: abrupt cutoffs, baffling twists, hollow choices, and finales that drained all the emotion out of stories people were deeply invested in. These endings did more than disappoint in the moment; they changed how the whole game was remembered.
