About this gallery:

For this list, we dove into the stats over at HowLongToBeat to decipher the highest-rated games. Their rankings are based on user reviews rather than the opinions of gaming news outlets or critics (though who knows how many of those users are actually bots…). Keep in mind, this isn’t a definitive "best games" list – some titles made the cut because they’re highly rated, even if only a handful of people reviewed them. Oh, and you’ll notice a lot of ties on this list!

We also decided to trim out any repeat entries from special editions to keep things fresh. With all that said, which game do you think deserves a spot here? Let us know in the comments!

DARK SOULS

Dark Souls (2011) – 92

Prepare to die – again, and again, and again. Dark Souls didn’t just birth a genre; it redefined what it meant to "git gud." With its hauntingly beautiful world, interconnected level design, and challenging (but fair, mostly) combat, this dark fantasy epic turned failure into an art form. Every boss fight feels like an epic battle of wits, reflexes, and sheer willpower. And when you finally succeed? The euphoria is unparalleled. It’s not just a game; it’s a trial by fire for your gaming soul. Welcome to Lordran – hope you brought a spare controller. | © FromSoftware

Cropped Zelda Ocarina Of Time

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998) – 92

Do you hear that? It’s the sound of a thousand ocarinas playing in unison to celebrate The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This groundbreaking adventure redefined 3D gaming with its open-world exploration, time-traveling narrative, and – of course – puzzles that made you feel smarter than your science teacher. Epona’s galloping, Link’s swordplay, and Navi’s "Hey! Listen!" (whether you liked it or not) cemented this masterpiece as one of gaming’s crown jewels. If you haven’t played it, what are you waiting for? Ganondorf’s been patiently waiting in that castle for decades! | © Nintendo

Cropped Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004) – 92

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is more than a game; it’s a cold-war era jungle opera where the stakes are as high as Snake’s calorie intake from eating frogs. This prequel took the series to new heights (and depths, if you consider the swamps) by introducing survival mechanics and one of the most iconic bosses of all time – The Boss. The emotional rollercoaster of betrayal, patriotism, and literal camouflage face paint makes this an unforgettable chapter in gaming history. Who knew crouching in tall grass could be this thrilling? | © Konami

Cropped cropped The Legend of Zelda Collectors Edition

The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition (2003) – 92

A treasure chest in disc form, The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition is the dream come true for fans who want to revisit Hyrule in all its early glory. Containing four Zelda games, including the legendary Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, this compilation gives players more rupees' worth than even a dungeon treasure room. It’s also a nostalgia bomb for anyone who remembers blowing on their Nintendo 64 cartridges and adjusting rabbit-ear antennas. With Link battling Ganon across generations, this collector’s item proves the hero in green tunics and pointy hats never goes out of style. | © Nintendo

Cropped Metal Gear Solid HD Collection

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (2011) – 92

Stealth, espionage, and an absurdly tangled web of conspiracy never looked this polished! The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection bundled together some of the most iconic games in the series, giving fans the chance to re-experience Snake's greatest hits with enhanced visuals and buttery-smooth performance. Whether it’s crawling through jungle underbrush or hanging from ledges like the gym class hero you were always meant to be, this collection offers a masterclass in stealth-action gameplay. Plus, who can resist the weirdly philosophical codec conversations? Snake’s adventures have never been more immersive – or confusing in the best way possible. | © Konami

Cropped The Last of Us

The Last of Us Part I (2022) – 92

Naughty Dog took one of gaming’s most beloved narratives and made it even better. The Last of Us Part I isn’t just a remake; it’s a reimagining of Joel and Ellie’s emotional journey with stunning new visuals and modernized gameplay. The heart-wrenching story of survival, loss, and love hits just as hard today as it did in 2013 – only now, it looks like a cinematic masterpiece. Sneaking past clickers has never been more terrifying, and the quiet moments of connection feel even more poignant. If you cried the first time, prepare to bawl all over again. | © Naughty Dog

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition (2023) – 92

After its rocky launch, Cyberpunk 2077 rose from the ashes like a neon phoenix. The Ultimate Edition represents the version we all dreamed of – an immersive, gritty dive into the streets of Night City with polished gameplay, expanded content, and fewer bugs trying to break the immersion. Whether you’re hacking into megacorporations, upgrading your cybernetic arsenal, or simply vibing in the city’s dystopian glow, this is sci-fi storytelling at its most ambitious. Keanu Reeves might be breathtaking, but it’s Night City itself that steals the show. | © CD Projekt Red

Cropped Umineko When They Cry

Umineko When They Cry (2007) – 92

Visual novels don’t get more intricate – or unsettling – than Umineko When They Cry. This chilling tale of a family gathering on a remote island quickly descends into mystery, murder, and mind-bending supernatural twists. With its layered storytelling, complex characters, and constant questioning of what’s real, it’s less a game and more an interactive puzzle box of psychological horror. You’ll laugh, cry, and probably lose sleep as you try to piece together the truth. Don’t let the seemingly simple graphics fool you – this is an intellectual and emotional gauntlet for the ages. | © 07th Expansion

Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) – 93

A cowboy simulator of epic proportions, Red Dead Redemption 2 ropes you into its world of sprawling landscapes, heart-wrenching storytelling, and Arthur Morgan’s ever-growing beard. Rockstar didn’t just make a game; they created an interactive Western masterpiece. Every detail, from the dynamic weather to the subtle quirks of your trusty steed, screams authenticity. And let’s not forget the moral quandaries – whether you play as a saint or an outlaw, Arthur’s tale of loyalty and redemption will stick with you long after the credits roll. Yeehaw, partner, it’s gaming at its cinematic finest! | © Rockstar Games

Cropped The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017) – 93

Breath of the Wild is less a game and more a love letter to exploration. Nintendo reimagined Hyrule as a sprawling open-world sandbox where everything begs to be climbed, cooked, or set on fire (sometimes all at once). Whether you're paragliding over a canyon, battling a Lynel with a stick, or accidentally frying dubious food, every moment feels like a new discovery. With its minimalist storytelling and boundless creativity, this isn’t just another Zelda game – it’s a reinvention of what adventure games can be. Move over, Master Sword; this time, experimentation is the real hero. | © Nintendo

Cropped The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (2023) – 93

Building on the foundation of Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom soars – literally – above and beyond with sky-high exploration and even more ways to interact with Hyrule’s sprawling sandbox. Whether you’re fusing weapons, crafting flying contraptions, or uncovering the mysteries of the Zonai, every moment feels like a creative playground. The sequel retains the magic of its predecessor while adding fresh layers of depth and intrigue to the story and gameplay. It’s another monumental achievement in adventure gaming – and yes, Link still looks dashing in his tunic. | © Nintendo

ELDEN RING

Elden Ring (2022) – 93

When FromSoftware teamed up with George R.R. Martin, the result was the awe-inspiring Elden Ring – a sprawling open-world RPG that somehow feels both fresh and quintessentially Soulsborne. The Lands Between invite you to explore a richly detailed world where every corner hides a secret, a boss, or a breathtaking vista. The punishing combat remains a hallmark, but the freedom to tackle challenges your way makes it a more approachable epic. Mount up, Tarnished, because Elden Ring isn’t just a game – it’s a journey to greatness. | © FromSoftware

Cropped Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (2006) – 94

Snake is back in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, and this time, he’s packing a revamped camera system that makes sneaking even more exhilarating. A reimagining of Snake Eater, this version takes what was already a Cold War espionage classic and adds polish, extra content, and multiplayer that was ahead of its time. From the legendary fight with The End to the jaw-dropping finale, Subsistence proves that even perfection can be improved. Camouflage yourself in nostalgia – this is stealth action at its finest. | © Konami

Cropped Bloodborne

Bloodborne: Game of the Year Edition (2015) – 94

Welcome to Yharnam, where the streets are bloody, the beasts are relentless, and the vibe is somewhere between gothic nightmare and Lovecraftian fever dream. Bloodborne: Game of the Year Edition offers the definitive experience of this brutal action RPG, complete with its haunting The Old Hunters expansion. Fast-paced combat, intricate lore, and an atmosphere so tense it’ll have you double-checking shadows make this a game you won’t soon forget. Come for the challenge, stay for the existential dread – just don’t forget to embrace the hunt. | © FromSoftware

Baldurs Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 (2023) – 94

Grab your dice and prepare for adventure – Baldur's Gate 3 isn’t just a game; it’s an entire Dungeons & Dragons campaign brought to life. With its rich storytelling, unforgettable characters, and staggering level of player freedom, this RPG feels like magic in digital form. Whether you’re romancing a party member, befriending a talking brain, or crit-failing your way into disaster, every choice feels like it’s part of your own epic saga. Larian Studios delivered a masterpiece that’s as deep as the Underdark and as satisfying as a nat 20. | © Larian Studios

Persona 5

Persona 5 Royal (2020) – 94

Stylish, sprawling, and dripping with flair, Persona 5 Royal took an already phenomenal JRPG and made it even better. With new characters, additional story arcs, and quality-of-life improvements, this definitive version of the Phantom Thieves’ rebellion against societal corruption is utterly irresistible. The turn-based combat is sleek, the soundtrack is a bop, and the bond-building with your crew is endlessly rewarding. You don’t just play Persona 5 Royal – you live it. Time to steal some hearts and your free time. | © Atlus

Cropped Astrobot

Astro Bot (2024) – 94

Astro is back, more energetic than ever, and ready to play! Join our adorable robotic hero in this new, grand space adventure. When the PS5® mothership is attacked by Astro's eternal galactic arch-enemy, shattering its circuits and scattering the crew across space, only Astro can fix it! In his biggest mission yet, he needs your help to rescue the lost crew and rebuild the ship. Astro Bot isn't just a game; it's a celebration of PlayStation's rich legacy, wrapped in a platforming experience that's as heartwarming as it is exhilarating. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment

Half Life Alyx

Half-Life: Alyx (2020) – 94

Virtual reality got its defining moment with Half-Life: Alyx, a prequel that rewrote the rules for immersive storytelling and gameplay. Exploring City 17 through Alyx Vance’s eyes is a sensory experience like no other. The gravity gloves, environmental puzzles, and nail-biting combat make it more than just a VR showcase – it’s a triumph of innovation and atmosphere. Fans waited over a decade for a new Half-Life, and Valve didn’t disappoint. It’s not Half-Life 3, but it’s the next best thing – and maybe even better. | © Valve

Cropped The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Game of the Year Edition (2016) – 94

Geralt of Rivia’s magnum opus gets the royal treatment in the Game of the Year Edition, which bundles the base game with the exceptional Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions. This sprawling RPG is the gold standard for storytelling, with morally complex choices, rich lore, and a world so alive you can practically smell the alchemy ingredients. Whether you’re slaying monsters, playing Gwent, or contemplating existential philosophy with a talking tree, there’s no shortage of wonder in the Continent. Toss a coin to this masterpiece – it’s worth every penny. | © CD Projekt Red

Portal 2

Portal: Companion Collection (2022) – 95

Cake may still be a lie, but the Portal: Companion Collection is undeniably real – and it’s glorious. This bundle brings the brilliance of Portal and Portal 2 to modern consoles, complete with mind-bending puzzles, dark humor, and GLaDOS’s unparalleled passive-aggressiveness. Whether you’re navigating test chambers with precision or laughing at Wheatley’s bumbling antics, this collection is a masterclass in game design and storytelling. It’s clever, it’s challenging, and yes, it still makes you question the ethics of sentient AI. In short: still alive, still brilliant. | © Valve
