The 10 Worst Endings In Video Game History

1-10

Elden Ring 2022 cropped processed by imagy

10. Elden Ring (2022)

Elden Ring spends its entire runtime making the Lands Between feel ancient, cursed, unknowable, and massive enough to swallow a wiki whole. Then the ending often boils down to a throne, a short narration, and whatever cosmic paperwork you happened to file before the final boss. The different outcomes matter in lore, but onscreen, several of them feel like palette swaps for people who read item descriptions like scripture. For a game this mythic, the final moment lands with more whisper than thunder. | © FromSoftware

Cropped Mass Effect 3

9. Mass Effect 3 (2012)

The original Mass Effect 3 ending became infamous because it made three games of loyalty, sacrifice, romance, politics, and impossible choices collapse into a last-minute cosmic traffic light. BioWare had built a universe where tiny decisions could haunt you hours later, then suddenly asked players to accept a handful of broad options that felt weirdly detached from Commander Shepard’s journey. The Extended Cut helped add context, but the damage was already branded into gaming history. Ending a space opera is hard; ending it like this was asking for a war room meltdown. | © BioWare

Worst Endings In Video Game History Halo 2

8. Halo 2 (2004)

Halo 2 is not on this list because its campaign is bad; in many ways, it is one of the boldest sequels Xbox ever had. The problem is that its ending doesn’t feel like an ending so much as someone pulled the disc out during the good part. Master Chief’s “finishing this fight” line became iconic, sure, but iconic is not the same as satisfying when the credits arrive before the fight actually happens. Bungie delivered a legendary cliffhanger, but also one of gaming’s most notorious cases of narrative blue-balling. | © Bungie

Cropped Alan Wake

7. Alan Wake (2010)

Alan Wake earns plenty of admiration for its eerie atmosphere, episodic structure, and Stephen King-by-way-of-Nordic-nightmare mood, but the finale leaves a lot of players staring at the screen like their controller just lied to them. The famous “It’s not a lake, it’s an ocean” line is cool, cryptic, and extremely pleased with itself, yet it also pushes resolution out of reach right when the story needs emotional weight. Mystery is the point, yes, but mystery without enough closure can feel less profound than evasive. Alan escapes one nightmare only to trap the audience in another. | © Remedy Entertainment

Worst Endings In Video Game History Dark Souls

6. Dark Souls (2011)

The ending of Dark Souls is thematically fitting, which is the polite way of saying it barely explains itself and still expects applause. After surviving poisoned swamps, collapsing kingdoms, cursed gods, and bosses with job titles longer than their health bars, the player gets a stark choice: link the fire or walk away into darkness. On paper, that is elegant; in the moment, it can feel brutally thin for such a punishing pilgrimage. FromSoftware made ambiguity an art form here, but even great art can leave players muttering, “Wait, that’s it?” | © FromSoftware

Worst Endings In Video Game History Crysis

5. Crysis (2007)

Crysis spends much of its campaign showing off alien tech, tropical warfare, and a nanosuit so powerful it made half the PC market sweat harder than the protagonist. Then the finale rushes into a messy carrier showdown, throws a giant alien threat at the player, and exits with the energy of a trailer for a sequel rather than a proper payoff. The last stretch is noisy, impressive, and oddly hollow, like watching a benchmark test try to become drama. Crytek built a technical monster, but the ending forgot to bring the emotional ammunition. | © Crytek

Far Cry 2 ending

4. Far Cry 2 (2008)

Far Cry 2 was always a grimy, nihilistic machine: guns jammed, malaria flared up, friends betrayed you, and every faction seemed committed to making the world worse. Even with that in mind, the ending is a miserable shrug, forcing the player into a final bargain with the Jackal where survival, heroism, and morality all feel equally contaminated. You either help refugees escape through bribery or sacrifice yourself with explosives, and neither route offers much beyond exhaustion. It is bold, but bold can still feel like being handed a cigarette after crawling through broken glass. | © Ubisoft Montreal

Prince of Persia 2008

3. Prince of Persia (2008)

Prince of Persia has one of the most gorgeous fantasy worlds Ubisoft ever built, which makes its ending sting even more. After spending the entire adventure healing the land and stopping Ahriman’s corruption, the Prince revives Elika by undoing that progress and freeing the evil they just fought to contain. It is romantic in the most selfish possible way, but the game frames the moment with such confidence that it almost dares you to object. Plenty of players objected anyway, especially when the story’s real closure was pushed outside the main game. | © Ubisoft Montreal

Worst Endings In Video Game History Dr Mario

2. Dr. Mario (1990)

Nobody boots up Dr. Mario expecting Shakespeare in scrubs, but even puzzle games can offer a cleaner sense of payoff than this. After grinding through viruses, falling capsules, and that dangerously catchy music loop, the reward is basically a brief visual pat on the head before the game moves on with its life. Mario may be dressed as a doctor, but the ending has the bedside manner of an empty waiting room. It is not offensive or disastrous, just shockingly barebones for a game that became such a recognizable Nintendo staple. | © Nintendo

Worst Endings In Video Game History Fallout 3

1. Fallout 3 (2008)

The original Fallout 3 ending is legendary for all the wrong reasons: after a massive open-world RPG built around player agency, the finale suddenly decides your options should become weirdly narrow and melodramatic. The infamous purifier choice becomes especially absurd if you have radiation-immune companions nearby, because the game still pushes sacrifice like nobody in the room understands basic problem-solving. Bethesda later softened the blow with additional content, but the original ending remains a masterclass in how to sabotage momentum at the finish line. The Capital Wasteland deserved a better goodbye than a forced moral lecture. | © Bethesda Game Studios

1-10

A great video game ending can turn a good story into a classic, but a bad one can make dozens of hours feel like a cruel joke. Some finales fumble the landing with lazy twists, rushed boss fights, confusing reveals, or choices that suddenly stop mattering. From beloved franchises that angered their fanbases to ambitious stories that collapsed at the finish line, these are the worst video game endings players still complain about today.
