15 Video Game Bosses So Hard They Had To Be Nerfed

1-15

Starscourge Radhan Elden Ring

1. Starscourge Radahn — Elden Ring (2022)

The launch version of Starscourge Radahn turned his desert festival into a public execution, complete with enormous hitboxes, lethal arrows, and meteor attacks that could erase a healthy Tarnished. Patch 1.03 corrected several oversized hitboxes while accidentally reducing the power of certain moves. FromSoftware restored that unintended damage loss shortly afterward, but the fairer collision remained. The “I defeated Radahn before the nerf” badge is legitimate, then—just slightly less heroic than its owners would have you believe. | © Bandai Namco Entertainment

2. Absolute Virtue — Final Fantasy XI (2002)

Absolute Virtue spent years treating Final Fantasy XI’s finest linkshells as mildly entertaining background noise. Its regeneration, damage resistance, tremendous health pool, and ability to reuse devastating two-hour skills produced marathon attempts without revealing a dependable path to victory. Square Enix eventually adjusted its resistance and imposed a two-hour encounter limit amid growing concern over absurdly prolonged superboss battles. The pendulum swung rather dramatically: following the changes, one group demolished the supposedly untouchable monster in roughly a minute. | © Square Enix

Absolute Radiance Hollow Knight cropped processed by imagy

3. Absolute Radiance — Hollow Knight (2017)

Reaching Absolute Radiance already meant surviving the Pantheon of Hallownest, a monstrous boss gauntlet where one late mistake could erase an entire run. Waiting at the summit was an even faster Radiance armed with double-damage attacks, overlapping projectiles, tiny platforms, and precious little interest in personal space. Team Cherry later removed 50 health from several phases and cut the final section from 450 health to 300. The fight remains nightmarish, but at least the last few seconds no longer feel like a separate mortgage payment. | © Team Cherry

Zhang Liang Wo Long Fallen Dynasty 2023

4. Zhang Liang — Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty (2023)

Dropping Zhang Liang into the opening mission of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty was roughly equivalent to placing the final exam before the first lesson. His two forms forced newcomers to master deflections immediately, with long combinations and critical attacks punishing anyone still learning the controls. An early update reduced his first form’s maximum health, adjusted his damage and AI, and improved the camera during aerial attacks. Team Ninja even added a dedicated tutorial, finally admitting that perhaps the tutorial boss should perform a little actual tutoring. | © Koei Tecmo

Echo of Lilith Diablo IV 2023

5. Echo of Lilith — Diablo IV (2023)

Echo of Lilith earned her reputation through colossal health, deceptive hitboxes, and wave attacks capable of instantly deleting characters built over dozens of hours. Her second phase added collapsing platforms and murderous blood orbs, because apparently surviving the first half demonstrated unacceptable optimism. Blizzard repeatedly adjusted the encounter as Diablo IV evolved, eventually reducing the health of all Tormented bosses by 30 percent and weakening Lilith’s Blood Boils alongside them. She remains an endgame monster, but defeating her no longer requires quite as much tolerance for supernatural geometry. | © Blizzard Entertainment

Boost Guardian Metroid Prime 2

6. Boost Guardian — Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (2004)

One member of the development team famously admitted that he could not defeat the Boost Guardian without using debug mode, which feels like a fairly conclusive balance review. The original GameCube battle trapped Samus in Dark Aether without a protective light zone, meaning the atmosphere drained her health while the boss ricocheted around the arena like a murderous pinball. Its difficulty was lowered for the Wii rerelease and Metroid Prime Trilogy. Players revisiting that version were not suddenly better at Morph Ball combat; Nintendo had quietly shown mercy. | © Nintendo

Moorwing Hollow Knight Silksong 2025

7. Moorwing — Hollow Knight: Silksong (2025)

Moorwing arrives early enough in Hollow Knight: Silksong that Hornet may still be operating with limited tools, health, and patience. The airborne predator hurls spinning blades across the arena, repeatedly vanishes beyond the screen, and originally dealt punishing damage for a boss positioned near the beginning of the adventure. Team Cherry’s first post-launch patch explicitly reduced Moorwing’s difficulty after players collided with that sudden spike. The adjustment was described as slight, preserving the fight’s speed while making each encounter feel less like an ambush arranged by the developers themselves. | © Team Cherry

The Roaring Knight DELTARUNE 2025 cropped processed by imagy

8. The Roaring Knight — DELTARUNE (2025)

Hidden near the end of Chapter 3, the Roaring Knight offers an optional fight designed for anyone who thought ordinary DELTARUNE bullet patterns were becoming suspiciously survivable. Its Sword Tunnel attack proved especially vicious because the moving blades occupied more space than their graphics suggested, turning apparent safe zones into tiny pixelated lies. Version 1.03 reduced the swords’ hitboxes relative to their visuals, making the barrage easier to read and dodge. The Knight remained brutal, but it could no longer wound players through the ancient technique of inaccurate geometry. | © Toby Fox

The Lost Sinner Dark Souls II 2014

9. The Lost Sinner — Dark Souls II (2014)

The Lost Sinner was already an aggressive swordswoman fought inside a gloomy arena that made keeping her targeted unnecessarily troublesome. New Game Plus then invited two red pyromancers into the room, turning a tense duel into a three-person assault filled with fireballs and very limited healing opportunities. An early Dark Souls II update reduced the Lost Sinner’s health and damage, while her New Game Plus accomplices also received lower health and attack power. What had been one of Drangleic’s nastiest fights became considerably more forgiving—and considerably less flammable. | © Bandai Namco Entertainment

Simon Manus Awakened God Lies of P cropped processed by imagy

10. Simon Manus, Awakened God — Lies of P (2023)

Simon Manus originally ended Lies of P with two bulky health bars and a second phase seemingly directed by someone throwing celestial hazards at the screen from off-camera. Patch 1.2.0 reduced the health of Simon Manus, Arm of God, then lowered the damage dealt by his Awakened God form. Players were also given a better chance of breaking his stance, while summoned Specters received improved health and damage. He still demanded clean defensive play, but the battle stopped feeling like three separate disasters sharing one boss arena. | © NEOWIZ

C Thun World of Warcraft

11. C’Thun — World of Warcraft (2004)

Calling the original C’Thun difficult undersells a raid encounter capable of producing unavoidable deaths while burying 40 players beneath an unreasonable supply of tentacles. Giant adds could appear in disastrous locations, continue spawning during vulnerable phases, and overwhelm groups faster than they could create meaningful damage windows. Blizzard lowered the health of Giant Tentacles, reduced several attacks, made Ground Rupture resistible, and slowed the spawning cycle. Further fixes prevented tentacles from appearing inside C’Thun’s stomach or during his weakened state, finally transforming an infamous roadblock into a killable Old God. | © Blizzard Entertainment

Dice King Cuphead cropped processed by imagy

12. King Dice — Cuphead (2017)

King Dice does not merely fight Cuphead; he makes players survive a casino board packed with minibosses before granting them the privilege. The cruelest square was “Start Over,” which could send an unlucky run backward and force another tour through the Dice Palace. Patch 1.1.3 limited that space to one activation per attempt, removing the possibility of repeated setbacks without touching King Dice’s parry-heavy card attack. It was a small alteration, but after several consecutive minibosses, “small” begins to look suspiciously like divine intervention. | © Studio MDHR

AAP07 BALTEUS Armored Core 6 cropped processed by imagy

13. AAP07: BALTEUS — Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon (2023)

BALTEUS welcomed newcomers to Armored Core VI by hiding behind a pulse shield and launching enough homing missiles to establish its own air force. Surviving the barrage only unlocked the flamethrower phase, where one poorly timed dodge could erase an otherwise respectable attempt. Regulation Update 1.02 adjusted several of the boss’s attacks, with its missiles receiving noticeably weaker tracking. The same patch strengthened numerous early-game firearms, giving more builds a practical chance against it. BALTEUS remained a skill check, but no longer demanded quite so much airborne clairvoyance. | © Bandai Namco Entertainment

Hephaistos Final Fantasy 14

14. Hephaistos — Final Fantasy XIV (2010)

Raid groups reached Abyssos: The Eighth Circle on Savage difficulty and discovered a damage check so tight that certain jobs began disappearing from recruitment listings. Square Enix later acknowledged that Hephaistos had roughly one percent more health than intended because the internal testing team had become unusually proficient during development. Patch 6.21 removed that excess health from both phases. One percent sounds microscopic until eight people spend ten minutes executing a complicated battle perfectly, only to watch the boss wipe everyone while clinging to a sliver of life. | © Square Enix

Promised Consort Radahn Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree cropped processed by imagy

15. Promised Consort Radahn — Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree (2024)

FromSoftware apparently looked at Radahn’s original reputation and decided the sequel required lasers, afterimages, relentless combinations, and a demigod riding on his back. The final battle of Shadow of the Erdtree left barely enough room to attack, while Miquella’s blinding effects often concealed the next incoming strike. Patch 1.14 changed Radahn’s opening behavior, adjusted multiple attacks, and reduced damage, stamina damage, and the range of certain moves. Improved visual clarity finally allowed players to study the boss instead of interpreting a supernatural light show through tears. | © Bandai Namco Entertainment

1-15

Beating a tough boss is supposed to feel rewarding; spending six hours being flattened by the same attack is something else entirely. These video game bosses arrived so brutally overtuned that practice, patience, and questionable amounts of caffeine still were not enough. Player frustration mounted until developers finally stepped in and made the fights more manageable. From absurd damage spikes to attacks that felt downright unfair, these 15 bosses were so hard that only a nerf could save them.
