15 Video Game Endings That Completely Insulted the Player

1-15

A slap in the face.

Fable II

15. Fable II (2008)

Fable II built its whole back half around one dog and one massive moral choice, then closed the book in about thirty seconds. You save your family or the dog or the entire population of Albion, pick a reward, and watch a slideshow explain the rest of your life. No final confrontation, no reaction to years of choices you made across the map. After a game obsessed with consequence, the ending treats your entire playthrough like a formality to wrap up quickly. | © Microsoft Game Studios

Dying Light

14. Dying Light (2015)

Dying Light spends its whole runtime building tension with Rais, then resolves it with a final tower climb that feels like padding instead of a climax. Crane gets betrayed, tossed into a pit, and left to fight his way out through the exact same zombie gauntlet players had already done a dozen times. The actual emotional payoff gets buried under one more parkour checklist before the credits roll. After forty hours of story setup, ending on a repetitive obstacle course feels like the writers ran out of ideas. | © Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (Techland)

Far Cry 5

13. Far Cry 5 (2018)

Far Cry 5 spends forty hours letting you fight back against a cult, then decides your resistance was pointless the whole time. Joseph Seed was right about the nuclear apocalypse, and the game reveals this by forcing a mushroom cloud onto the horizon no matter what you chose. Every side mission, every rescued hostage, every ounce of agency gets wiped out in a scripted cutscene you cannot skip. Ubisoft basically built an open world about free will just to tell players none of it mattered. | © Ubisoft

Cropped assassins creed iii

12. Assassin's Creed III (2012)

Three games spent building Desmond Miles into someone worth caring about, then Assassin's Creed III killed him off in about five minutes. He touches a mysterious orb, saves the world from solar destruction, and dies without any real goodbye to the people he spent years fighting alongside. The bigger insult is what comes after. The credits roll, and you realize the entire modern day plot, the whole reason the series existed, just got wrapped up in a rushed cutscene nobody asked for. | © Ubisoft

Heavy Rain

11. Heavy Rain (2010)

Heavy Rain built its entire mystery around finding the Origami Killer, then handed you a reveal that broke its own rules. Scott Shelby turns out to be the culprit despite earlier scenes establishing his arthritis and asthma as physical limitations he clearly should not have while committing the murders. The game spent hours building tension through QTE sequences and branching paths, only for the answer to feel like it ignored its own script. Fans who pieced together the clues early got punished with a twist that made less sense the more they thought about it. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment

Arkham Knight

10. Batman: Arkham Knight (2015)

Arkham Knight had one job in its final hour: give Batman a real send-off. Instead it buries the Joker twist under a mind-palace fight sequence, then locks the true ending behind 100% completion. Most players just got Bruce Wayne supposedly dying in a fire, which nobody believed for a second. Rocksteady built three games of trust and cashed it in on a cliffhanger that felt like a locked DLC tease. | © Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment

Fallout 3

9. Fallout 3 (2008)

Fallout 3 spends dozens of hours letting you shape the wasteland, then locks you into a death scene that ignores basic logic. Your character has to walk into a radioactive chamber even when a companion like Fawkes stands right there, immune to radiation, and volunteers instead. The game just says no and forces the tragic beat anyway. Bethesda only fixed it later with paid DLC, which tells you everything about how badly the original ending landed. | © Bethesda Softworks

Knights of the Old Republic II

8. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II (2004)

Knights of the Old Republic II got yanked out of Obsidian's hands before it was actually finished. LucasArts forced a shipping date that arrived months before the game was ready, and the final act shows every open wound. Entire planets, companion arcs, and plot threads just vanish or get resolved through text dumps instead of scenes. You beat Kreia, the most interesting villain Star Wars gaming ever produced, and the credits roll like nobody remembered to write a proper goodbye. | © LucasArts

Deus Ex Human Revolution

7. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (2011)

Deus Ex: Human Revolution spends forty hours building a web of factions, conspiracies, and personal choices. Then it asks you to walk into one of four rooms and press a button. No combination of hacking skill, dialogue choices, or side quest decisions changes a single frame of what happens next. Adam Jensen's entire journey gets reduced to picking a colored elevator, and the game barely pretends otherwise. | © Square Enix

Mass Effect Andromeda

6. Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017)

Mass Effect: Andromeda spends forty hours teasing a mystery about the Benefactor and who really sent the Andromeda Initiative, then just drops it. You beat the final boss on Meridian, watch a tidy little wrap up cutscene, and the game acts like nothing else needs explaining. All those sequel hooks about the Quarian Ark and Ryder's future got left hanging because EA never greenlit a follow up. Players got a cliffhanger with no movie attached, which stings worse than a bad ending ever could. | © EA

Spec Ops The Line

5. Spec Ops: The Line (2012)

Spec Ops: The Line spends its whole runtime making you feel like a hero, then spends the ending explaining why that feeling was disgusting. Walker's final choice loops back to the white phosphorus scene, forcing you to confront a massacre the game tricked you into causing. Some players felt targeted rather than challenged, like the game was lecturing them for simply pressing the buttons it demanded. It's a rare case where the insult was intentional, which somehow made people angrier. | © 2K Games

Cropped Bio Shock Infinite

4. BioShock Infinite (2013)

BioShock Infinite spends its final act throwing infinite universes and infinite Elizabeths at the screen until the multiverse talk stops meaning anything. Booker drowning himself across every timeline is supposed to feel profound, but it mostly plays like the writers backed themselves into a corner. The ending demands a rewatch just to piece together what actually happened, and even then the lighthouse imagery raises more questions than answers. Instead of closure, players got a philosophy lecture dressed up as a twist. | © 2K Games

METAL GEAR SOLID V THE PHANTOM PAIN

3. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015)

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain never actually finishes, it just stops. Chapter 2 recycles old missions with harder enemies, padding out a game that was clearly missing its real ending. Kojima's exit from Konami left Skull Face dying in a hallway instead of the showdown players spent forty hours building toward. The last twist, that you've been playing a body double the whole time, feels less like a gut punch and more like an excuse for cut content. | © Konami

The Last of Us Part II

2. The Last of Us Part II (2020)

Ellie gets her revenge in The Last of Us Part II, except the game keeps yanking the knife out of her hand right before it lands. Abby survives Santa Barbara, Ellie loses her fingers for nothing, and the final shot leaves both women broken with no payoff for the player who sat through twenty-five hours of misery to get there. The guitar callback is a gut punch, sure, but it also feels like the game admitting the whole cycle was pointless. That ambiguity might be the point, but it still stings after everything Joel's death set in motion. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment

Mass Effect 3

1. Mass Effect 3 (2012)

Mass Effect 3 spent three games letting players shape a galaxy, then closed it all out with a glowing kid explaining that every choice boils down to three colors. Red, blue, or green, pick your flavor of the same explosion, and watch cutscenes that barely change no matter what you did. Fans were so furious that BioWare actually released a free Extended Cut just to add context nobody asked to need. That kind of response tells you everything about how badly the original landing missed the mark. | © Electronic Arts
