Turns out Albion is weeks away from a threat that could wipe out the entire population, and every brutal choice he made was buying time to prepare for it. 14. Edgar Ross

Edgar Ross spends Red Dead Redemption hunting down John Marston's old gang, and the game frames him as a smug government stooge for most of it. But strip away the personal cruelty and Ross is just doing his job, closing a file on outlaws who genuinely committed murder and robbery for years. John gets a sympathetic redemption arc, yet he still rode with Dutch's gang while they killed plenty of innocent people. Ross never lied about what he was after. 13. Jon Irenicus

Jon Irenicus spends Baldur's Gate II hunting for the kind of power that would let him feel something again after literal magical mutilation stripped away his soul. His methods are horrific, kidnapping and experimenting on his own sister among them, but his core complaint holds up under scrutiny. Elven society exiled and disfigured him for wanting more than their rigid traditions allowed, and the game never pretends that punishment was proportionate. 12. Haytham Kenway

Haytham Kenway spends Assassin's Creed III positioned as the obstacle to Connor's Assassin ideals, but his Templar philosophy holds up better than the game wants to admit. He argues that people need order and guidance more than they need absolute freedom, and given how badly Connor's revolution actually goes for the Native population, that argument lands harder than intended. Haytham is not cruel for the sake of it either, he genuinely believes control prevents chaos. The Helghast look like faceless space fascists at first glance, which makes it easy to miss the backstory Killzone actually gives them. They descend from human colonists exiled to a toxic, resource-poor planet, left to rot by the same ISA forces that later invade their home. Their war against Earth reads less like conquest and more like payback for generations of neglect. 10. Vaas Montenegro

Vaas Montenegro spends most of Far Cry 3 mocking Jason Brody for thinking he can waltz onto the island and walk away a hero. His whole rant about the definition of insanity is basically him calling out the player for repeating the same violent loop the game keeps rewarding. By the end, Jason has slaughtered hundreds of people and started enjoying it, which makes Vaas look less like a madman and more like someone who saw the ending coming. 9. Dutch Van Der Linde

Dutch Van Der Linde spends most of Red Dead Redemption 2 insisting that civilization is closing in and the old ways of living free are already dead. Everyone around him treats this like paranoid rambling from a man losing his grip. Then the epilogue shows the Pinkertons hunting down anyone connected to the gang, the government swallowing the frontier whole, and men like John Marston getting crushed by the exact system Dutch warned about. Magus spends most of Chrono Trigger looking like a straightforward monster obsessed with summoning Lavos. Turns out he's been trying to kill the thing the entire time, using every scrap of dark magic he has to stop an apocalypse nobody else even understands yet. His methods are brutal and his attitude is worse, but his goal lines up with the heroes far more than his reputation suggests. Few villains get redeemed just by revealing what they were actually doing all along. | © Square Enix

7. Pagan Min

Pagan Min spends most of Far Cry 4 looking like a colorful psychopath in a pink suit, which makes it easy to miss what he actually says about Kyrat. He took over a broken country, built infrastructure, and kept a functioning state running while the Golden Path burned villages in the name of freedom. Meanwhile Sabal and Amita, the rebels you are supposed to root for, spend the game arguing over which flavor of extremism gets to replace him. 6. Handsome Jack

Handsome Jack genuinely believes he's the hero of Pandora, and honestly, look at what he's working with. The Vault Hunters he's fighting are murder hobos who loot corpses and shoot first in literally every encounter, while bandits and psychos run wild across the planet. Jack wants order, infrastructure, and a functioning society under Hyperion instead of constant anarchy. His methods are monstrous, sure, but the guy has a point buried under all that charisma and cruelty. | © 2K Games

5. Big Boss

Big Boss spends the entire Metal Gear series getting painted as the guy who betrayed everything Snake stood for. Then you actually sit with his reasoning and realize he watched soldiers get used and discarded by governments that never once said thank you. His answer was Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land, nations built for soldiers instead of politicians. He was not wrong that the system chews people up, he just decided the fix was building his own war machine instead of fixing the one that failed him. | © Konami

4. Dr. Maruki

Dr. Maruki's whole plan in Persona 5 Royal boils down to erasing trauma and giving everyone the life they wished for. No more dead parents, no more abuse, no more grief, just a world reshaped by cognitive science and good intentions. The game frames him as the final boss, but his logic is hard to dismiss when you look at what he is actually offering broken people. Persona 5 Royal never really proves him wrong, it just insists that pain has to stay because choosing it yourself matters more than comfort handed to you. | © Sega / Atlus

3. Joseph Seed

Joseph Seed spends Far Cry 5 preaching about a coming collapse, and the game ends with that collapse actually happening. Nuclear missiles fly, the world burns, and everything he warned his followers about turns out to be true. Players spent the whole story treating him as a cult leader spouting nonsense, only to get an ending that plays his sermons completely straight. That twist retroactively makes every one of his creepy speeches feel less insane and a lot more like a man who genuinely saw the end coming. | © Ubisoft

2. Kreia

Kreia spends Knights of the Old Republic II tearing apart the entire idea of the Force as a moral compass, and the game never really proves her wrong. She argues that the Jedi and Sith are both slaves to the same cosmic system, feeding it conflict either way, while true freedom means stepping outside that cycle entirely. Her lessons are brutal on purpose, punishing you for blind alignment with either light or dark side choices.
