15 Video Games That Became Famous for Something Other Than Their Gameplay

1-15

Mixtape 2026 game

1. Mixtape (2026) — Gaming journalism’s cozy little club

Calling Mixtape a game feels generous when most of its three-hour runtime consists of walking between cutscenes and completing minigames so undemanding that failure barely enters the equation. That did not stop IGN from awarding it a perfect 10, while several other critics treated its licensed soundtrack, fashionable animation, and reheated ’90s nostalgia as evidence of a medium-defining masterpiece. The praise became an ugly symbol of gaming journalism’s biases, especially once players connected publisher Annapurna Interactive to billionaire heiress Megan Ellison and accused the industry of enthusiastically protecting its well-connected darlings. Nobody proved that nepotism purchased those scores, but Mixtape certainly made the suspicion easier to understand: apparently, gameplay becomes optional once the right people call your interactive music video “art.” | © Annapurna Interactive

Mass Effect 2007

2. Mass Effect (2007) — Television turned it into the “Sexbox” game

BioWare offered players an entire galaxy of alien civilizations, political conspiracies, and difficult moral decisions. Fox News found the brief romance scene. Its infamous “Sexbox” segment claimed Mass Effect contained graphic, controllable sexual encounters and was being marketed toward children, despite its Mature rating and relatively restrained content. EA demanded a correction, while one guest later admitted that she had criticized the game without seeing the scenes properly. Commander Shepard saved civilization several times, yet the mainstream press remained fixated on whether the commander could remove a shirt. | © BioWare

Eve Stellar Blade cropped processed by imagy

3. Stellar Blade (2024) — Eve’s body overshadowed almost everything else

Mention Stellar Blade online and someone will inevitably bring up Eve’s skin suit before discussing parries, bosses, or post-apocalyptic lore. Her revealing outfits turned Shift Up’s action game into ammunition for competing arguments about sexualization, censorship, beauty standards, and whether attractive female characters had become politically unacceptable. Costume alterations introduced around launch only added fresh oxygen to the debate, producing petitions and refund demands from players who believed Sony had intervened. Eve became a symbol to several groups at once, which is impressive considering she mostly wanted to stab monsters with a very large sword. | © Shift Up

Cropped Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

4. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004) — “Hot Coffee” caused a ratings catastrophe

Rockstar had already filled San Andreas with gang warfare, drug trafficking, police corruption, and enough casual mayhem to concern several generations of parents. The hidden “Hot Coffee” sex minigame still managed to cause the real scandal. Modders discovered that unfinished sexual content remained inside the game files, allowing it to be restored even though ordinary players could not access it. The ESRB revoked the Mature rating, major retailers stopped selling the game, and Rockstar released corrected copies. Apparently, simulated murder was manageable; an awkward bedroom minigame required emergency government attention. | © Rockstar Games

Cyberpunk 2077

5. Cyberpunk 2077 (2020) — Its broken launch became an industry cautionary tale

All those neon trailers and Keanu Reeves appearances created expectations that no ordinary launch could comfortably survive. Cyberpunk 2077 did not enjoy an ordinary launch. The base PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions suffered from severe performance problems, crashes, disappearing objects, broken artificial intelligence, and bugs that turned serious scenes into accidental comedy. Sony removed the game from the PlayStation Store and offered full refunds, an almost unthinkable outcome for such a heavily promoted release. Years of updates eventually produced a remarkable comeback, but Night City’s first impression involved considerably more T-posing than CD Projekt intended. | © CD PROJEKT RED

Concord

6. Concord (2024) — It survived for only two weeks

Concord was supposed to become Sony’s next long-term multiplayer property, complete with cinematic characters, seasonal ambitions, and all the usual live-service machinery. Instead, it launched to a tiny audience and became a historical curiosity almost immediately. Sony stopped sales, refunded every purchaser, and shut down the servers exactly 14 days after release. Arguments about its $40 price, derivative concept, and unpopular character designs continued, but none could compete with that astonishingly short lifespan. Plenty of unsuccessful games are forgotten; Concord became famous because it barely remained available long enough to be remembered. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment

STAR WARS Battlefront II

7. Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) — “Pride and accomplishment” became gaming’s favorite punchline

The controversy began with loot boxes and a progression system that made iconic characters feel less like rewards than items trapped behind an intergalactic payment plan. Players were particularly furious about the grind required to unlock heroes such as Darth Vader. Responding on Reddit, an EA representative explained that the system was designed to create “a sense of pride and accomplishment,” producing one of the most downvoted comments in the platform’s history. The publisher removed paid microtransactions just before launch and later rebuilt the progression system, but the phrase had already joined gaming’s permanent dictionary of corporate disasters. | © Electronic Arts

Hogwarts Legacy

8. Hogwarts Legacy (2023) — Buying it became a political statement

Avalanche Software spent years constructing an elaborate open-world Hogwarts, yet the loudest discussion happened outside its castle walls. J.K. Rowling’s public statements about transgender issues inspired boycott campaigns, defensive counter-campaigns, streamer harassment, and endless debate over whether purchasing the game financially supported the Harry Potter creator. Coverage often discussed the ethics of playing it before mentioning spells, classes, or exploration. The game sold enormously well despite the backlash, but its release proved that even a single-player fantasy adventure could become a public loyalty test before anyone had selected a wand. | © Warner Bros. No Mans Sky

9. No Man’s Sky (2016) — Players remembered the promises more than the planets

Hello Games promoted a procedurally generated universe where every distant world invited discovery, and public imagination enthusiastically filled in the remaining details. Interviews, demonstrations, and trailers created expectations involving multiplayer encounters, dramatic space battles, varied creatures, and planetary experiences that the launch version could not consistently deliver. Complaints became intense enough for the United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Authority to investigate the game’s Steam advertising, although the regulator ultimately cleared it. Continued updates transformed No Man’s Sky into a far richer experience, but its original release remains the standard warning against letting anticipation design the game on your behalf. | © Hello Games

Devotion 2019

10. Devotion (2019) — One Winnie the Pooh reference triggered an international crisis

Hidden among the oppressive rooms of this Taiwanese psychological horror game was a small talisman mocking Chinese president Xi Jinping through the Winnie the Pooh comparison widely censored in China. Players noticed it, Chinese users review-bombed the game, and Devotion vanished from Steam shortly afterward. A planned GOG release was also abruptly canceled following what the storefront described as messages from gamers. Red Candle Games eventually began selling it directly, but one background asset had already eclipsed its haunting story about family, religion, and abuse. Political controversy became the monster that followed Devotion outside the apartment. | © Red Candle Games

Six Days in Fallujah

11. Six Days in Fallujah (2023) — The war it depicted nearly prevented its release

The original project was announced while memories of the Iraq War and the Second Battle of Fallujah remained painfully immediate. Critics questioned whether a commercial shooter could responsibly portray civilian suffering, alleged war crimes, and a deeply divisive conflict without reducing everything to heroic military spectacle. Konami abandoned plans to publish it following the backlash, and the game disappeared for more than a decade before returning under different developers and entering Early Access. Even after resurfacing, debate continued over whose experiences it represented and whether documentary interviews could balance the act of turning a real battle into entertainment. | © Victura

Cropped Night Trap

12. Night Trap (1992) — The United States Senate made it notorious

Watching Night Trap today raises an important question: how did this goofy interactive B-movie frighten elected officials? During congressional hearings about video game violence, its footage of teenage women being attacked became evidence of an industry supposedly selling sexual aggression to children. That interpretation ignored a rather important mechanical detail—the player’s objective was to protect the women by trapping their attackers. The hearings nevertheless made Night Trap nationally famous and helped push publishers toward creating the ESRB. A mediocre Sega CD experiment had somehow become both a political villain and a milestone in industry self-regulation. | © Digital Pictures

Cropped Hatred

13. Hatred (2015) — Its entire marketing strategy was outrage

The first trailer introduced a long-haired mass murderer embarking on a “genocide crusade,” leaving little mystery about the reaction Destructive Creations wanted. Hatred was temporarily removed from Steam Greenlight before Gabe Newell personally reversed the decision, giving the controversy another news cycle and considerably more free publicity. It later received an Adults Only rating from the ESRB, a classification rarely granted for violence alone. Reviews of the finished twin-stick shooter were largely secondary; its real product was the promise of forbidden, politically incorrect entertainment. The game did not merely attract outrage—it arrived wearing outrage as a promotional T-shirt. | © Destructive Creations

Cropped The Guy Game

14. The Guy Game (2004) — An underage contestant made it legally toxic

Even without the lawsuit, The Guy Game was destined for notoriety: it combined basic trivia questions with footage of women exposing themselves during spring break. Its sleazy novelty became a much more serious matter when one participant sued, revealing that she had been 17 when the footage was recorded. A court granted an injunction preventing further distribution of versions containing her image, effectively ending the game’s commercial life. What had been marketed as cheeky adult entertainment became a case involving privacy, consent, and catastrophic age verification. Suddenly, the trivia questions were the least embarrassing thing about it. | © Topheavy Studios

E T The Extra Terrestrial

15. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) — Its landfill became more famous than the game

Popular mythology transformed E.T. into the single cartridge that destroyed Atari and crashed the North American video game industry. Reality was messier: poor management, market saturation, excessive production, and numerous weak releases all contributed to the collapse. The legend gained its irresistible final detail from reports that Atari had buried unsold games in an Alamogordo, New Mexico landfill. An excavation later uncovered E.T. cartridges alongside many other Atari titles, confirming the burial while complicating the story everyone preferred. The game may not have killed an industry, but it did become one of the few releases to receive a posthumous archaeological dig. | © Atari

1-15

A great game is usually remembered for its mechanics, story, or the hours players happily lost inside it. These titles had a different fate, becoming inseparable from sex scenes, political controversies, disastrous launches, character designs, lawsuits, and marketing scandals. In some cases, the surrounding noise completely swallowed the game underneath; in others, it turned an otherwise ordinary release into a permanent piece of gaming history. Here are 15 video games that became famous for almost everything except actually playing them.
