Little Nightmares III is Supermassive Games' upcoming addition to our favorite horror puzzle-platformer series, and many fans are asking the big question: Is Little Nightmares 3 a sequel or a prequel? Where exactly does it fit in the timeline?

Let's dive into what we know so far.

Where Does Little Nightmares 3 Fit In The Timeline?

It’s not a prequel. It’s not a sequel. It’s... something else.

Little Nightmares 3 isn’t exactly picking up where Six or Mono left off. Instead, it does its own thing — kind of like a horror side story in the same twisted universe. Think of it more like a standalone sequel that dives deeper into the nightmare realm we know as The Nowhere.

The Little Nightmares Timeline (So Far)

Before LN3, here’s the order most fans agree on:

  • Very Little Nightmares: A mobile prequel starring the Girl in the Yellow Raincoat (not Six!)
  • Little Nightmares II: Follows Mono and Six before the events of the original game
  • Little Nightmares (1): The classic. Six and the Maw.
  • Secrets of the Maw (DLC): Runs alongside LN1, but shows the story of the Runaway Kid

So Where Does Little Nightmares 3 Fit?

In short: it doesn’t fit neatly anywhere in that timeline. LN3 introduces two new characters — Low and Alone — and tosses them into a terrifying new place called The Spiral, a part of The Nowhere we haven’t seen before.

Here’s what we know so far:

  • It’s standalone: You don’t need to know Six or Mono to get what’s going on.
  • Same world, new nightmares: The Nowhere is massive and creepy, and this is just another part of it.
  • Timeline? Who knows: Time doesn’t really work normally in this universe. Things could be happening before, after, or beside each other.

Lore Connections (But No Direct Continuation)

Even though the story is new, you’ll definitely notice that classic Little Nightmares vibe: disturbing monsters (ahem, “Residents”), surreal locations, and childhood fears turned real. And if you’ve listened to the tie-in podcast, Sounds of Nightmares, you’ll catch even more hidden connections between stories.

Why The Change?

Tarsier Studios (the original devs) stepped away from the series after LN2 (By the way: Tarsier is now producing "Reanimal", a game that looks a lot like Little Nightmares, and releasing at a similar time.

Back to Little Nightmares 3. Now, Supermassive Games (yup, the ones behind Until Dawn) are taking over. They’re keeping the dark, creepy tone — but also putting their own spin on it. New characters, new horrors, same vibes.

To sum it up, Little Nightmares 3 is probably not a direct sequel to Six or Mono’s story. It’s a fresh tale set in the same world — and it’s likely going to expand what we know about The Nowhere.

Well, we can't be 100% sure of course, so we will have to wait until the game comes out some time this year!
