15 Atmospheric Movies Perfect for a Gloomy Rainy Weekend

1-15

Made for grey skies.

A Cure for Wellness

15. A Cure for Wellness (2016)

Nobody went to see A Cure for Wellness in 2016, and that's a shame because it's unhinged in the best way. A Wall Street exec gets sent to retrieve his boss from a Swiss wellness spa and ends up trapped in something closer to a body horror fever dream. The eel scene alone separates the people who finish this movie from the people who tap out. Gore Verbinski spent real studio money on something this strange, and you have to respect that kind of commitment. | © 20th Century Fox
Crimson Peak 2015

14. Crimson Peak (2015)

Guillermo del Toro built an entire mansion for this movie and it shows in every creaking floorboard. Crimson Peak gets filed under horror but it's really a gothic romance with ghosts leaking blood colored clay through the walls. Mia Wasikowska wanders those hallways in costumes that deserve their own screen credit. This one rewards people who like atmosphere more than jump scares, and it never apologizes for that choice. | © Universal Pictures
Dark City 1998

13. Dark City (1998)

What if the city you lived in was rebuilt every night while you slept? That's the premise powering Dark City, a film that came out a year before The Matrix and arguably did the reality-bending thing with more style. Rufus Sewell spends the movie trying to remember who he actually is while pale strangers called the Strangers rearrange buildings like furniture. It got buried at the box office and found its real audience years later on video. | © New Line Cinema
The Witch

12. The Witch (2015)

A family exiles itself to the edge of the woods, and the woods start exiling them right back. The Witch builds dread out of goat behavior and candlelight instead of anything jumping out of the dark. Anya Taylor-Joy's introduction to American audiences happens here, long before anyone knew her name. "Wouldst thou like to live deliciously" became a meme, sure, but the line still lands cold in context. | © A24
Cropped Sleepy Hollow

11. Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Tim Burton took a short story everybody read in middle school and turned it into something genuinely gorgeous to look at. Johnny Depp plays Ichabod Crane as a squeamish detective instead of a schoolteacher, which was a weird enough swing in 1999 to actually pay off. The fog, the blue gray color palette, Christopher Walken's filed teeth as the Hessian, it all adds up to a Halloween movie people keep coming back to. Sleepy Hollow never needed to be scary to be unforgettable. | © Paramount Pictures
The Crown

10. The Crow (1994)

Brandon Lee died during production of The Crow, and that shadow never quite leaves the film. The rain-soaked revenge story feels like it was shot inside a bruise, all industrial grime and black eyeliner. Eric Draven's makeup and trench coat became a whole aesthetic that outlived the plot around it. Watching it now means watching a performance that became a memorial by accident. | © Miramax
The Others

9. The Others (2001)

A mother keeps her children locked away from sunlight, convinced they have a rare allergy to light. That premise alone makes The Others feel suffocating before anything supernatural even happens. Nicole Kidman plays the whole thing so tightly wound that every creak in the house lands like a threat. The twist works because the film never cheats to get there. | © Dimension Films
Cropped The Lighthouse

8. The Lighthouse (2019)

Two men lose their minds on a remote island, and The Lighthouse never lets you feel sane along with them. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe spend most of the runtime shouting, drinking, and slowly losing track of what day it is. The black and white photography makes the fog and the foghorn feel like characters with their own grudges. By the end you are not sure what actually happened, and that is the point. | © A24
Zodiac

7. Zodiac (2007)

David Fincher chases the Zodiac killer for over two and a half hours and never gives you an arrest. Zodiac cares more about the toll of obsession than the thrill of the hunt. Jake Gyllenhaal's cartoonist turns into a man who cannot stop drawing conclusions from scraps of evidence. The movie trusts you to sit with that frustration instead of resolving it for you. | © Paramount Pictures
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

6. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

Lisbeth Salander rides into frame on a motorcycle, pierced and furious, and the whole movie reorganizes itself around her. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo takes a cold Swedish mystery and turns it into something nastier and more personal under David Fincher's direction. Rooney Mara plays Lisbeth like someone who has already decided the world owes her nothing. The investigation is compelling, but she is the reason the film still gets brought up. | © Columbia Pictures
The Batman

5. The Batman (2022)

Rain never stops falling in Gotham for three hours straight, and somehow that works in its favor. Robert Pattinson plays Batman as a man barely holding together, more detective than brawler, scribbling notes in a half lit apartment. The Riddler murders feel procedural instead of cartoonish, which gives the whole thing a weight most comic movies skip. It turns out a slow, soaked, miserable Gotham was exactly what the character needed. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
Prisoners

4. Prisoners (2013)

Two girls go missing on Thanksgiving, and Hugh Jackman's character decides the police are moving too slowly. What follows is not a thriller built on twists so much as one built on dread, long interrogation scenes, and a basement that gets harder to watch the longer the film runs. Jake Gyllenhaal plays the detective as someone drowning in paperwork while a father spirals into something worse than grief. Nobody walks away from Prisoners feeling good, and that was always the point. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
Blade Runner 2049

3. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Thirty years after the original, somebody finally found a reason to revisit that world, and it paid off. Ryan Gosling plays a blade runner chasing a secret that might unravel everything he thinks he is, wandering through orange dust storms and flooded, neon drowned Vegas. Roger Deakins shot it like every frame could be framed and hung on a wall. Few sequels have ever looked this confident about not rushing anywhere. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
Shutter Island

2. Shutter Island (2010)

Leonardo DiCaprio spends most of Shutter Island investigating a disappearance at a hospital for the criminally insane, and something about the place keeps not adding up. Martin Scorsese leans hard into fog, storms, and a musical score that feels like it is warning you before anything happens on screen. The hospital itself becomes a character, all stone hallways and locked wards that seem to shift the longer he stays. The ending recontextualizes everything that came before it, which is rare for a twist to actually earn. | © Paramount Pictures

Se7en

1. Se7en (1995)

A city that never stops raining sets the mood before the plot even gets moving. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt chase a killer who turns the seven deadly sins into crime scenes, each one more carefully staged than the last. The grime on every wall and the constant drizzle make the investigation feel like it is happening inside something rotting. That box in the final scene changed how an entire generation thought endings could work. | © New Line Cinema
