Family Matters 22 Stevil

15. Family Matters — "Stevil" (1996)

A ventriloquist dummy should not be the scariest thing a sitcom ever put on screen, and yet Waldo nearly managed it in Family Matters. Steve Urkel builds the thing himself, which makes it worse somehow, like he invited the nightmare into his own house. The episode leans harder into horror-movie shadows and creepy dialogue than anything else the show ever attempted. For a few minutes, the Winslow living room feels like a different genre entirely. | © ABC
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air 22 Hex and the Single Guy22

14. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air — "Hex and the Single Guy" (1993)

Will Smith mocking a psychic is exactly the kind of setup that was always going to backfire on him. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air sends the whole family to a séance after Hilary drags them along for fun, and Will can't help running his mouth. The consequences that follow give the episode a genuinely eerie edge the show rarely touched. It's a reminder that even the loosest, jokiest sitcoms knew how to sit in a spooky mood when they wanted to. | © NBC
Cheers 22 Fairy Tales Can Come True22

13. Cheers — "Fairy Tales Can Come True" (1984)

Halloween at the bar means costumes, and costumes at Cheers mean somebody is bound to make a fool of themselves for love. Sam and Diane's will-they-won't-they gets a holiday spin as the gang dresses up and chaos predictably follows. The episode doesn't need tricks or scares to earn its spot, just sharp dialogue and the kind of romantic tension the show built its whole run on. It's '80s sitcom comfort food, dressed up for one night only. | © Paramount Television
The Brady Bunch 22 Fright Night22

12. The Brady Bunch — "Fright Night" (1972)

Three kids convince themselves their house is haunted, and instead of calling it quits, they decide to scare each other first. That's the entire engine of "Fright Night," and it's enough. The Brady Bunch never needed real monsters because sibling mischief was always the scarier threat in that house anyway. Watching Greg and the gang scheme against one another is Halloween nostalgia at its most harmless and warm. | © Paramount Television
Frasier 22 Halloween

11. Frasier — "Halloween" (1997)

A costume party built around literary characters sounds like exactly the kind of idea Frasier Crane would be proud of. Naturally, it falls apart within minutes once the guests start misreading each other's outfits and intentions. Frasier thrives on this kind of elegant disaster, where good taste and personal pride collide until nobody can tell who's actually in on the joke. The episode turns Halloween into one long, well-dressed misunderstanding, and somehow that's more fun than an actual scare would be. | © Paramount Television
Home Improvement 22 The Haunting of Taylor House

10. Home Improvement — "The Haunting of Taylor House" (1992)

Tim Taylor cannot just hand out candy like a normal person. "The Haunting of Taylor House" turns the garage into a full production, complete with power tools repurposed for maximum scares. The Tool Time instincts bleed straight into dad mode, and the result is pure early-90s sitcom chaos. It is the kind of episode that made Halloween feel like a family competition nobody actually won. | © ABC
Boy Meets World 22 And Then There Was Shawn22

9. Boy Meets World — "And Then There Was Shawn" (1998)

Shawn Hunter spends this episode convinced a killer is loose, and Boy Meets World leans all the way into it. The lighting goes moody, the score turns ominous, and suddenly a sitcom about teenagers looks like a slasher movie. Nobody actually dies, but the show commits to the bit with total sincerity. That willingness to go there is exactly why this one still gets brought up. | © ABC
Modern Family 22 Halloween22

8. Modern Family — "Halloween" (2010)

Claire Dunphy does not do Halloween halfway. In Modern Family's "Halloween," she rigs the entire house into a haunted maze, fog machines included, mostly to spite trick-or-treaters who disrespect her candy rules. Phil, naturally, gets tangled up trying to be the cool dad with his own competing scheme. The whole episode is a reminder that suburban Halloween decorating can turn into a full-blown arms race. | © ABC
The Office 22 Halloween22

7. The Office — "Halloween" (2005)

Dunder Mifflin on Halloween means costumes nobody asked for and candy as currency. Michael Scott has to fire someone this same day, and he keeps delaying it by hiding behind a Robert the exterminator mask. Jim shows up as nothing, technically dressed as "a question mark," which somehow becomes the funniest costume in the room. The Office finds a way to make office dread and Halloween goofiness sit in the same scene without it feeling forced. | © NBC
Roseanne 22 Boo22

6. Roseanne — "Boo!" (1989)

Turning the house into a haunted attraction was basically inevitable for the Conners. "Boo!" has Roseanne and Dan converting their home into a cheap, loud, gloriously tacky haunted house for the neighborhood kids. Fake blood, bad wiring, and a budget that clearly does not exist all collide into something weirdly charming. It is Halloween the way most families actually did it, held together with duct tape and attitude. | © ABC
Sabrina the Teenage Witch 22 A Halloween Story22

5. Sabrina the Teenage Witch — "A Halloween Story" (1996)

Linda Hart from a different dimension shows up and chaos follows, that's the setup for Sabrina the Teenage Witch's Halloween outing. Sabrina spends the episode untangling magic gone sideways while trying to keep her ordinary teenage life intact. The show was never scary on purpose, and that's exactly the point here. It's the kind of half hour that made Friday nights feel safe and a little magical at the same time. | © ABC
Friends 22 The One with the Halloween Party

4. Friends — "The One with the Halloween Party" (2001)

Monica squeezed into a Catwoman suit just to prove a point to Chandler, and that's the whole engine of this episode. Ross shows up as "Spud-nik," a costume nobody understands and everybody mocks. Chandler spends the night miserable in a pink bunny suit he never wanted to wear. Friends turns Halloween into another excuse for the group to needle each other, and somehow that's enough to carry the whole thing. | © NBC
Buffy the Vampire Slayer 22 Halloween

3. Buffy the Vampire Slayer — Halloween

Costumes start acting like truth serum once Ethan Rayne's cursed shop opens for business. Buffy becomes a helpless noblewoman, Xander turns into a soldier, and Willow's ghost costume makes her literally invisible. Buffy the Vampire Slayer uses the gimmick to flip its characters inside out for an hour. The episode works because it takes a silly premise and lets it say something real about who these people actually are underneath. | © The WB
The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror

2. The Simpsons — Treehouse of Horror

Homer trapped in a toaster, Bart as a fly, a whole house built on an ancient burial ground. "Treehouse of Horror" gave The Simpsons permission to break its own rules once a year. No continuity, no consequences, just three unhinged little stories stitched together under one roof. Decades later it's still the one night Springfield gets to be genuinely weird. | © Fox
Its the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown

1. It's the Great Pumpkin — Charlie Brown

A pumpkin patch, a blanket, and Linus waiting all night for something that never comes. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown never needed jump scares or gags to earn its spot in people's memory. Snoopy's imaginary dogfight against the Red Baron is funnier than anything a slasher plot could manage. This is the special that taught a generation what Halloween was supposed to feel like. | © ABC

Few things signal Halloween more than the right TV special, and some of these have become as much a part of the holiday as the candy itself. Here are the 15 best Halloween TV specials ever made.
