15 Best Psychological Horror Movies of 21st Century

1-15

Soft Quiet

15. Soft & Quiet (2022)

The refreshments are out, the introductions are underway, and the women gathering in Soft & Quiet have something considerably uglier than gossip to share. Beth de Araújo follows a white supremacist meeting into an evening of escalating racist violence, using real-time storytelling to deny us any comfortable distance. Its most disturbing observation is how eagerly these women encourage one another, turning personal grievances into permission for cruelty. Everyday respectability provides a frighteningly thin disguise. | © Momentum Pictures

The Lodge

14. The Lodge (2019)

Booking a remote winter retreat to improve family relationships turns out to be an impressively bad idea in The Lodge. Riley Keough plays Grace, a woman with a traumatic cult upbringing left alone with her fiancé’s resentful children. Directors Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala let the snowbound house become a place where grief, religious terror, and distrust feed one another. Keough’s vulnerability makes the mounting cruelty especially painful; you keep hoping somebody will show her kindness. | © Neon

The Others

13. The Others (2001)

Curtains must stay closed in Nicole Kidman’s household, where two children’s sensitivity to sunlight makes darkness a medical necessity. Alejandro Amenábar turns that practical restriction into exquisite suspense: footsteps travel through supposedly empty rooms, servants seem suspiciously untroubled, and maternal authority starts sounding like desperation. The Others deserves more than a reputation for its ending. Kidman’s brittle performance gives this ghost story an emotional chill that survives knowing exactly what waits behind the door. | © Dimension Films

It Comes at Night

12. It Comes at Night (2017)

Trust becomes a luxury nobody can afford in It Comes at Night. Sheltering from a deadly contagion, a family reluctantly shares its isolated home with strangers, setting up rules that promise safety without offering much reassurance. Trey Edward Shults filters much of the dread through a teenager’s nightmares while the adults struggle to distinguish caution from suspicion. The uncertainty is exhausting by design: protecting your loved ones sounds noble until fear starts deciding what protection requires. | © A24

Cropped Saint Maud 2020

11. Saint Maud (2019)

Maud has found God, and she’s increasingly certain he has assigned her a very specific patient. Rose Glass’s debut follows a hospice nurse whose determination to save a dying dancer’s soul grows dangerously possessive. Morfydd Clark makes her devotion feel inseparable from loneliness, with every imagined sign offering relief from an otherwise painfully small existence. Saint Maud gets under the skin through that hunger to matter, before delivering a final image with absolutely no interest in mercy. | © A24

Cropped Speak No Evil 2022

10. Speak No Evil (2022)

How offensive would your hosts have to become before you packed the car? Christian Tafdrup turns that question into an endurance test when a Danish family visits a Dutch couple they met on vacation. Speak No Evil accumulates small boundary violations until politeness becomes a mechanism of control. The temptation to shout advice at the screen is enormous, but the film’s nastiest trick is making those first, seemingly harmless concessions feel so embarrassingly easy to recognize. | © Shudder

Cropped last night in soho 2021

9. Last Night in Soho (2021)

Those gorgeous vintage dresses come with some deeply unpleasant baggage. In Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho, aspiring designer Eloise experiences visions of an ambitious singer in 1960s London, initially finding the escape irresistible. Mirrors and shifting perspectives draw the two women together as glamour gives way to exploitation. Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy anchor the spectacle, making this supernatural mystery a sharp rebuke to the fantasy that being born in another decade would solve everything. | © Universal Pictures

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

8. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

Barry Keoghan can make a perfectly ordinary sentence sound like grounds for a restraining order. As the teenager entering a surgeon’s carefully managed life, he gives The Killing of a Sacred Deer its unnervingly calm menace. Yorgos Lanthimos surrounds him with sterile spaces and stilted conversations, making domestic life feel wrong before the nightmare fully emerges. Beneath the absurdity sits a brutal problem of responsibility: Colin Farrell’s doctor wants an explanation that might let him escape the consequences. | © A24

Cropped it follows 2014

7. It Follows (2014)

Watch the background. David Robert Mitchell makes that ordinary viewing habit feel compulsive in It Follows, where a sexual encounter leaves Jay pursued by an entity that can resemble anyone. Maika Monroe gives the supernatural premise an exhausted, vulnerable center, while wide compositions leave far too much room for somebody to approach. Disasterpeace’s electronic score supplies another reason to tense up. The creature’s leisurely pace is the masterstroke: escaping buys time, never the reassurance of being finished. | © RADiUS-TWC

The Lighthouse

6. The Lighthouse (2019)

Sharing a workplace with Willem Dafoe’s belligerent lighthouse keeper would test anyone’s composure. Add isolation, alcohol, and an increasingly furious Robert Pattinson, and The Lighthouse becomes a maritime nightmare with a surprisingly filthy sense of humor. Robert Eggers uses stark black-and-white photography and a nearly square frame to squeeze the men together. Their arguments are often ridiculous, until the laughter catches: authority, desire, and resentment have become impossible to separate, and neither man offers a reliable account. | © A24

Shutter Island

5. Shutter Island (2010)

A missing patient brings U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels to an island psychiatric hospital; a storm makes leaving considerably less straightforward. Martin Scorsese directs Shutter Island with the extravagance of a Gothic nightmare, crowding Leonardo DiCaprio’s investigation with ominous architecture, traumatic memories, and increasingly slippery evidence. There’s pleasure in tracking the clues, but the emotional damage matters more than solving the mystery. Even apparent moments of clarity leave the uncomfortable question of what Teddy can bear to acknowledge. | © Paramount Pictures

Get Out

4. Get Out (2017)

The compliments are part of the problem. Visiting his white girlfriend’s family, Chris encounters people whose enthusiasm for his Blackness makes every introduction increasingly uncomfortable. Jordan Peele builds Get Out around Daniel Kaluuya’s watchful reactions, letting a strained smile or hesitant pause register before the larger threat becomes clear. Its satire has teeth because admiration and objectification occupy the same conversation. Even a teacup becomes terrifying once the family’s hospitality reveals how little Chris’s autonomy matters. | © Universal Pictures

Black Swan 2010

3. Black Swan (2010)

Ballet’s promise of effortless beauty looks positively fraudulent once Darren Aronofsky gets close to the damaged feet. Black Swan follows Natalie Portman’s Nina as landing the lead in Swan Lake intensifies her perfectionism and destabilizes her perception. Mirrors become unreliable, bodily changes feel horrifyingly intimate, and professional competition invades every private thought. Portman gives the ordeal its heartbreaking logic: Nina has organized her entire life around being exceptional, leaving frighteningly little of herself outside the performance. | © Fox Searchlight Pictures

Hereditary

2. Hereditary (2018)

Toni Collette makes a family dinner feel almost as unbearable as anything lurking in the ceiling. Her performance as grieving miniature artist Annie gives Hereditary a terrifying emotional volatility, with affection, resentment, and guilt spilling into the same exchanges. Ari Aster’s precise compositions make the family home resemble another model under somebody else’s control. As the supernatural threat develops, the domestic anguish retains its force: these people desperately need one another and can barely endure being together. | © A24

Mulholland Drive

1. Mulholland Drive (2001)

A conversation in a diner should offer a breather from a Hollywood mystery. David Lynch makes it one of Mulholland Drive’s most frightening passages, demonstrating how thoroughly this film can sabotage ordinary surroundings. Naomi Watts and Laura Harring lead a story of ambition, attraction, and unstable identity whose emotional currents remain powerful even when its chronology slips away. Solving every detail is optional; feeling the desperation beneath its beautiful fantasies is much harder to avoid. | © Universal Pictures
