Counterpart

15. Counterpart (2017-2019)

Counterpart gives J.K. Simmons two versions of the same guy, split by a parallel world hidden beneath Berlin. One Howard is meek and forgettable, the other hardened by decades on the other side, and watching Simmons play both without ever making it a gimmick is the whole draw. The show wraps espionage, identity, and quiet grief into something that feels more like a le Carre novel than a typical sci-fi series. It got canceled after two seasons, which still feels like a waste given how tightly the story was building. | © Starz

Doctor who

14. Doctor Who (2005-)

Doctor Who has been running in some form since 1963, but the 2005 revival is what turned a British cult show into a global obsession. The Doctor dies and comes back as someone new every few years, which means the show can swap lead actors, tone, and even genre without ever technically ending. One season gives you body horror in a spaceship, the next gives you a musical episode, and somehow it all still connects back to the same character. Few shows have earned the right to reinvent themselves this many times and still feel like the same story. | © BBC / Disney+

Devs

13. Devs (2020)

Devs opens like a Silicon Valley thriller, then quietly turns into a meditation on fate and quantum physics. Alex Garland builds the Devs building itself as this glowing gold monolith, hiding a machine that might be able to see the past and future with total precision. The show moves slow and trusts you to sit with big ideas about determinism instead of spelling them out. By the finale, it stops feeling like a mystery and starts feeling like a philosophy lecture with incredible visuals attached. | © FX on Hulu

Cropped 3 body problem

12. 3 Body Problem (2024-present)

3 Body Problem opens with a woman getting executed during China's Cultural Revolution, and somehow that connects to physicists dying by suicide decades later. The show jumps between timelines and continents without slowing down to hold your hand. Videogame sequences, disappearing stars, and a countdown only certain people can see all point toward something way bigger than humanity. Most shows would water this down for TV, but this one keeps the scale enormous and the dread constant. | © Netflix

Silo

11. Silo (2023-)

Silo drops you into an underground city where asking about the outside world can get you killed. Rebecca Ferguson plays an engineer who starts pulling at threads everyone else learned to leave alone, and the show slowly reveals just how much the silo's leaders have buried along with its people. The mystery unfolds at a patient pace, but every answer just opens up bigger, scarier questions. Few shows make claustrophobia feel this politically charged. | © Apple TV+

Fallout

10. Fallout (2024-)

Fallout somehow makes a story about nuclear wasteland cannibalism feel funny without losing the horror underneath. Ella Purnell plays Lucy, a vault dweller who steps into the surface world with a sunny attitude that gets tested constantly by raiders, mutants, and betrayal. Walton Goggins steals scenes as the Ghoul, a bounty hunter whose backstory reframes everything about pre-war society. The show nails the exact tone of the games, dark comedy sitting right next to real brutality. | © Amazon Prime Video

Stranger Things

9. Stranger Things (2016-)

Stranger Things turned a small Indiana town into the biggest horror playground on television. The Duffer Brothers built the whole thing out of 80s movie DNA, mixing Spielberg adventure with Stephen King dread and a synth score that never lets up. Eleven and the Upside Down gave Netflix its first real global obsession, and the show still knows how to make a kid on a bike feel like main character energy. Every season raises the monster budget, but the friendships are still what keep people coming back. | © Netflix

The Mandalorian 2019

8. The Mandalorian (2019-)

The Mandalorian brought Star Wars back to basics after years of galaxy-brain lore and prequels nobody asked for. A lone bounty hunter, a tiny green kid everyone calls Baby Yoda, and a slow build toward something like a family. The show works because it trusts silence and gunfights over exposition dumps. Even when later seasons lean harder into cameos and callbacks, Mando and Grogu still carry the whole thing. | © Disney+

For All Mankind

7. For All Mankind (2019-)

For All Mankind starts with one simple twist: the Soviets beat America to the moon. That single change sends NASA into overdrive, and the space race never actually ends. Each season jumps forward a decade, rewriting history as it goes, from women astronauts joining early to Mars missions happening years ahead of schedule. The show gets more ambitious with every season and somehow keeps its footing. | © Apple TV+

Fringe

6. Fringe (2008-2013)

Fringe starts out looking like a monster-of-the-week X-Files clone, then spends five seasons turning into something much weirder and more ambitious. Walter Bishop steals every scene as a brilliant, damaged scientist whose old experiments keep tearing holes into a parallel universe. Once that alternate world shows up, the show stops playing it safe and starts asking real questions about identity, memory, and what people owe their own doubles. Few shows commit this hard to a mythology this strange without losing the emotional core holding it together. | © Fox

Battlestar Galactica

5. Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009)

Battlestar Galactica reboot took a campy 70s premise and turned it into a grim study of survival after genocide. Humanity's last fleet runs from Cylon extermination while fighting about religion, politics, and who might secretly be a robot sleeper agent. The show never lets its space battles overshadow the paranoia bubbling inside the ships themselves. Few sci-fi shows have used the genre to talk about torture, terrorism, and democracy this directly without ever feeling like a lecture. | © Peacock

Andor

4. Andor (2022-)

Andor takes a Star Wars prequel about a minor character and turns it into a show about how empires actually function. There's no Jedi, no lightsabers, and barely any of the mysticism that usually drives this universe. Instead you get surveillance, prison labor, and the slow radicalization of ordinary people pushed too far. It's the rare franchise spinoff that trusts its audience enough to slow down and let tension build instead of spectacle. | © Disney+

The Last of Us

3. The Last of Us (2023-)

The Last of Us turns a zombie outbreak into an excuse to study grief, guilt, and what people owe each other. Joel and Ellie's road trip across a ruined America gets more dangerous from other survivors than from the infected chasing them. Episode three ditches the main pair for almost an hour to tell a quiet love story between two side characters, and it still ends up being one of the show's best hours. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey carry the rest with a bond that feels earned instead of scripted. | © HBO

Cropped Severance

2. Severance (2022-)

Severance splits its characters into two selves: one who suffers through a sterile office job, and one who gets to live an actual life outside it. Neither version knows what the other is doing, and that gap becomes the source of constant unease. Lumon Industries feels like a cult dressed up as a corporation, full of rules nobody questions and smiles that never reach the eyes. The show turns office dread into something genuinely unsettling, then keeps twisting the knife with every new answer it gives. | © Apple TV+

The Expanse

1. The Expanse (2015-2022)

The Expanse builds a solar system that actually feels lived in, from grimy Belter slang to the politics splitting Earth, Mars, and the outer colonies. Every faction has real motives, so the war brewing between them never feels like good guys versus bad guys. Then the protomolecule shows up and turns a political thriller into something much stranger. Few shows commit this hard to both physics and plot, and it shows in every episode. | © Prime Video
