15 Cult Classic Movies Fans Defend That Are Actually Awful

1-15

Let's be honest.

TV Shows & Movies - August 29th 2026, 17:00 GMT+2
The Wicker Man

15. The Wicker Man (2006)

Nicolas Cage punches a woman while wearing a bear suit, and somehow that is not even the strangest scene in The Wicker Man. The whole film plays like a remake that forgot what made the original unsettling and replaced it with shouting. Bees become a plot device treated with total seriousness. Fans defend it as so bad it loops back around to genius, but mostly it is just loud. | © Warner Bros.

Cropped Cool World

14. Cool World (1992)

A cartoon woman crossing into the real world sounds like a fun premise, and Cool World wastes it almost immediately. The animation looks impressive in isolated frames, all warped color and manic energy, but nothing connects to anything else on screen. Brad Pitt spends the runtime looking like he wandered onto the wrong set. Style without a story is still just noise. | © Paramount Pictures

Miami Connection

13. Miami Connection (1987)

Taekwondo rock bands were apparently a real pitch in 1987, and Miami Connection ran with it at full volume. The fight choreography is stiff, the acting swings between wooden and unhinged, and the plot barely holds the action scenes together. None of that stopped it from becoming a cult favorite decades later after being rediscovered and reissued. Charm does not equal quality, and this film proves the gap between the two. | © Drafthouse Films

Samurai Cop

12. Samurai Cop (1991)

Every line of dialogue in Samurai Cop sounds like it was translated twice and then read cold. The lead actor moves through fight scenes with all the urgency of someone waiting for a bus. Wigs shift mid punch, sound design misses entire lines, and the plot barely tries to justify any of it. People call this endearing, but endearing does not mean competent. | © Trans World Entertainment

Cropped Maximum Overdrive

11. Maximum Overdrive (1986)

Stephen King directed exactly one movie, and Maximum Overdrive explains clearly why he never tried again. Trucks come alive and terrorize a small town, which sounds fun until you sit through the pacing. The soundtrack blasts AC/DC over scenes that needed silence and tension instead. Cult status here feels more like nostalgia for the idea than love for the execution. | © De Laurentiis Entertainment Group

Highlander II The Quickening

10. Highlander II: The Quickening (1994)

Immortal Scottish swordsmen turn out to be aliens from a planet called Zeist, and that reveal alone tanked the franchise's credibility. Highlander II tries to explain mythology nobody asked to have explained, then buries it under ozone layers and time travel nonsense. Sean Connery comes back just to die again within minutes. Calling this a cult favorite ignores how badly it undercuts the film that made people love the concept in the first place. | © StudioCanal
Howard the Duck

9. Howard the Duck (1986)

Howard the Duck spent thirty million dollars on a rubber suit that still looks unfinished. George Lucas produced this thing right after Star Wars made him untouchable, which somehow made a talking duck from another dimension seem like a safe bet. Lea Thompson acts opposite a costume that barely moves its mouth, and the romance angle nobody wanted gets pushed anyway. Nostalgia keeps this one alive far more than the actual footage does. | © Universal Pictures

Battlefield Earth

8. Battlefield Earth (2000)

Two and a half hours of Scientology allegory dressed up as an action movie, and somehow that is the least strange part of Battlefield Earth. John Travolta plays a nine-foot alien named Terl with dreadlocks and platform boots, delivering every line like he is furious at the script. Dutch angles show up in scenes that have no reason to tilt at all. This is not so-bad-it's-good territory; it is just a genuinely confused production that never once finds its footing. | © Warner Bros.

Super Mario Bros

7. Super Mario Bros. (1993)

A movie based on a video game about jumping on mushrooms somehow becomes a grimy dystopian city ruled by Dennis Hopper. Super Mario Bros. throws out everything familiar about the source material and replaces it with fungus monsters and industrial sets that look borrowed from a different film entirely. Bob Hoskins later admitted he took the role for the money and regretted almost every day of filming it. Fans who defend this are really defending an idea of the game, not what actually ended up on screen. | © Buena Vista Pictures
Freddy Got Fingered

6. Freddy Got Fingered (2001)

Tom Green licks open wounds, delivers a baby with his teeth, and skins a dead moose in the middle of the street. Freddy Got Fingered treats shock value as a substitute for jokes, stacking gross-out scene after gross-out scene with barely a story holding them together. Rip Torn spends most of his screen time yelling, which becomes the closest thing the film has to a rhythm. Defending this as satire gives it credit the movie never actually earns. | © 20th Century Fox

Birdemic Shock and Terror

5. Birdemic: Shock and Terror (2010)

Eagles swoop in to attack a small California town, and the special effects look like clip art pasted onto footage of traffic. Birdemic: Shock and Terror runs on a budget that barely covers gas money, with romance scenes that stretch on for no reason and birds that explode on impact for reasons nobody explains. Fans call the ineptitude charming, but half the runtime is just characters driving and talking about solar panels. Watching it is less like enjoying a movie and more like waiting out a long red light. | © Severin Films

Plan 9 from Outer Space

4. Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959)

Cardboard tombstones wobble every time an actor brushes past them, and nobody on set seemed to notice or care. Plan 9 from Outer Space swaps its lead actor mid-shoot after his death, replacing Bela Lugosi with a chiropractor holding a cape over his face. Ed Wood built a reputation off this kind of shortcut, and the aliens' plan barely makes sense even by the standards of 1950s sci-fi. Calling it the worst movie ever made gives it more attention than the plot ever earns on its own. | © Valiant Pictures

Cropped Troll 2

3. Troll 2 (1990)

Vegetarian goblins terrorize a family that willingly swapped houses with total strangers, and that is the least confusing part of the plot. Troll 2 has no trolls in it at all, a detail the filmmakers apparently forgot to fix before release. George Hardy, a dentist by trade, delivers every line like he's reading it for the first time on camera. Midnight screenings turned it into a party movie, but the party works better than anything actually happening on screen. | © MDP Worldwide

The Room

2. The Room (2003)

Tommy Wiseau throws a football in a tuxedo, and that image alone tells you everything about the tone of this movie. The Room jumps between plotlines that vanish without explanation, including a cancer subplot mentioned once and never again. Every performance feels like it was filmed in a different movie entirely, stitched together by accident. People quote it at midnight screenings like scripture, but scripture usually makes more sense. | © Wiseau-Films

Cropped Showgirls

1. Showgirls (1995)

Nomi Malone claws her way to the top of a Vegas revue, and the movie treats every step of it like grand tragedy. Showgirls spends its budget on lap dances shot like perfume commercials, with dialogue so stiff it sounds translated twice. Paul Verhoeven aimed for satire, but the tone never lands anywhere close to a joke. Defenders call it a misunderstood classic, though misunderstood usually implies there was something to understand. | © MGM/United Artists

Every cult classic has a loyal army of defenders, but strip away the nostalgia and some of these movies are genuinely, gloriously bad. Fans will fight you on it, and that's half the fun. Here are 15 cult classic movies fans defend that are actually awful.
