15 Movies That Are 10/10 but You’ve Never Watched Them

The road 2009 cropped processed by imagy

15. The Road (2009)

Forget your zombie-apocalypse survival plan: The Road makes finding something edible feel ambitious enough. Adapting Cormac McCarthy’s novel, John Hillcoat follows Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee through an America where every stranger presents an impossible calculation. Mortensen’s fiercely protective father can be almost as frightening as the people he avoids. His son supplies the uncomfortable question underneath all that desperate survival: what exactly are they preserving if kindness becomes expendable? | © 2929 Productions

Dane De Haan in Chronicle

14. Chronicle (2012)

Give three teenage boys telekinesis and, yes, they will immediately use it to mess around. Chronicle understands that impulse, making its early experiments funny enough to sell the friendship before things deteriorate. Dane DeHaan plays Andrew, whose new abilities magnify frustrations that were already dangerous. Director Josh Trank also finds a clever benefit in the premise: a boy who can levitate his camera lets found-footage filmmaking escape its usual shaky-wrist limitations. | © 20th Century Fox

Columbus 2017

13. Columbus (2017)

Architecture enthusiasts get gorgeous buildings; everyone else gets Haley Lu Richardson quietly delivering a performance that deserves just as much attention. In Columbus, her friendship with a visiting John Cho develops through conversations about family obligations and the possibility of leaving home. Director Kogonada gives both actors space to hesitate, reconsider, and occasionally say less than they mean. Those immaculate compositions become surprisingly intimate when the people inside them cannot get their lives equally organized. | © Depth of Field

Petite Maman 2021

12. Petite Maman (2021)

Cleaning out a dead relative’s house means sorting through a life you only partly understood. Céline Sciamma approaches that experience through eight-year-old Nelly, who finds an unexpected friendship in the woods near her grandmother’s home. Petite Maman lets its extraordinary premise emerge through play, meals, and the easy seriousness of children talking together. Its brevity is part of its generosity: a whole complicated relationship becomes clearer without anyone delivering a speech explaining how to feel. | © Lilies Films

Cropped coherence

11. Coherence (2013)

Pay attention to the glow sticks. That sounds like ridiculous advice for watching a dinner-party thriller, but Coherence makes ordinary objects increasingly valuable as eight friends lose their grip on what is happening outside. A passing comet supplies the science-fiction disturbance; old resentments supply plenty of additional trouble. James Ward Byrkit keeps the confusion close enough to follow while letting every attempted explanation create another reason to distrust someone across the table. | © Bellanova Films

Cropped Short Term 12

10. Short Term 12 (2013)

Brie Larson’s Grace knows how to handle a crisis at the residential facility where she works. Letting someone help with her own life proves considerably harder. Short Term 12 builds its emotional force through that imbalance, giving the young residents humor, artistic talent, and personalities beyond their case histories. LaKeith Stanfield’s rap scene is especially powerful: an apparently casual invitation to listen becomes a disclosure that leaves both his listener and the audience struggling for words. | © Animal Kingdom

Never Let Me Go

9. Never Let Me Go (2010)

The English boarding school looks reassuringly respectable, which should probably be your first warning. Never Let Me Go follows three friends whose upbringing conceals a purpose that makes their ordinary romantic disappointments almost unbearable. Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, and Keira Knightley keep the relationships messy and recognizable within Mark Romanek’s adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel. Jealousy still wastes time, apologies still arrive late, and knowing better offers painfully little protection against either. | © DNA Films

The Conformist

8. The Conformist (1970)

Marcello Clerici would rather belong to a murderous political movement than risk looking abnormal. That craving for acceptance drives Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Conformist, in which a fascist operative takes an assignment targeting his former professor. Jean-Louis Trintignant makes Marcello’s evasiveness deeply unsettling, while Vittorio Storaro’s cinematography gives his world a seductive precision. You can admire a shot and recoil from what happens inside it, sometimes before the camera has even finished moving. | © Mars Film Produzione

Bridge to Terabithia

7. Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

Anyone arriving for a straightforward magical adventure may wish the ticket had included emotional insurance. Adapted from Katherine Paterson’s novel, Bridge to Terabithia invests first in Jess and Leslie, two children whose invented kingdom gives them somewhere to feel capable and understood. Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb make their companionship persuasive without turning either child into a miniature adult. That patient attention to friendship gives the fantasy its value—and makes the difficult material hit so hard. | © Walden Media

Monsieur Lazhar

6. Monsieur Lazhar (2011)

Bachir Lazhar arrives with formal manners and teaching methods that do not quite suit his Montreal classroom. The children, mourning their previous teacher, have more urgent concerns than his approach to dictation. Philippe Falardeau allows Monsieur Lazhar to be funny about those everyday mismatches without diminishing the grief surrounding them. As the substitute teacher, Fellag conveys warmth with an underlying reserve that gradually becomes essential: helping these pupils does not mean he knows how to help himself. | © micro_scope

After Yang 2021

5. After Yang (2021)

A broken android sends Colin Farrell looking for repairs and leaves him discovering a family member he barely understood. After Yang approaches artificial intelligence through the memories of a companion purchased to help raise a child. Kogonada makes the act of looking through those fragments absorbing, then increasingly uncomfortable: why did nobody notice so much of this life while it was happening? Farrell’s understated performance gives that belated curiosity a lovely, quietly ashamed tenderness. | © Cinereach

Song of the Sea

4. Song of the Sea (2014)

Ben is thoroughly annoyed with his little sister, an excellent starting point for a fantasy about learning to understand her. Their journey in Song of the Sea draws on Irish folklore, with Saoirse’s identity as a selkie connecting family troubles to a disappearing magical world. Tomm Moore’s animation rewards attention to every curve and pattern. Better still, the beauty never makes the children blandly adorable: resentment and affection remain tangled together throughout their adventure. | © Cartoon Saloon

In the Family

3. In the Family (2011)

An old will can make years of parenting suddenly count for very little. After his partner’s death, Joey discovers that the boy they raised together has been left in someone else’s legal care. Patrick Wang writes, directs, and stars in In the Family, allowing ordinary domestic memories to establish everything that paperwork overlooks. The extended conversations demand patience, but they also make listening feel consequential; a change in someone’s understanding can carry the weight of an action scene. | © In the Family LLC

Cropped donnie darko 2001

2. Donnie Darko (2001)

Underneath the rabbit costume and time-travel arguments, Donnie Darko is wickedly funny about adults who mistake certainty for wisdom. Jake Gyllenhaal’s troubled teenager navigates school, therapy, and an increasingly unstable reality, while Richard Kelly lets suburban absurdity coexist with genuine dread. Patrick Swayze’s motivational guru is a particularly inspired piece of casting. The mystery invites obsessive interpretation, but the emotional pull survives without a diagram explaining exactly where every event belongs in the timeline. | © Flower Films

A Monster Calls

1. A Monster Calls (2016)

Liam Neeson voicing an enormous tree sounds like reassuring backup for a bullied child. Unfortunately for Conor, this particular visitor brings stories that complicate his problems rather than conveniently solving them. A Monster Calls gives Lewis MacDougall the demanding role of a boy facing his mother’s serious illness while struggling with feelings he cannot comfortably admit. Director J.A. Bayona grants those ugly, contradictory emotions real importance, making the spectacular creature useful for something far harder than defeating a villain. | © Participant Media

1-15

You can only recommend The Shawshank Redemption so many times before someone asks for a movie they haven’t already seen. That’s where these 15 overlooked movies come in. They’re our picks for a 10/10, even if they rarely enter the conversation when people name their favorites. And because “underrated” gets attached to just about anything these days, we’re setting the bar higher than “better than the trailer made it look.”
