The Bye Bye Man — 15. The Bye Bye Man (2017)
Nobody actually gets scared of a name. That's the hole at the center of The Bye Bye Man, a movie that asks audiences to fear saying three syllables out loud. The early scenes at least try to build some dread around paranoia and intrusive thoughts, but once the shadowy dog-demon shows up, it plays like a CW pilot. By the end, teenagers are shouting the title at each other and the whole thing collapses into unintentional comedy. | © STX Entertainment

The Happening 2008 — 14. The Happening (2008)
M. Night Shyamalan built a career on premises that sound unbeatable on paper, and killer wind is one of them. The Happening opens with people walking backward off buildings and constructions crews stepping into wood chippers, genuinely unsettling stuff. The Boogeyman — 13. Mama (2013)
A ghost story works best when you can't see the ghost clearly, and Mama knew that for about an hour. Two feral children raised in the woods by something inhuman gave the first half real unease, with Jessica Chastain playing it straight and scared. The Boogeyman — 12. The Boogeyman (2023)
Grief is the scariest thing in The Boogeyman, at least for the first forty minutes. Sophie Thatcher plays a teenager drowning in loss while something unseen feeds on that pain, and the restraint actually works. Then the movie decides restraint doesn't sell tickets and gives the monster a full reveal, fangs and all. World War Z — 11. World War Z (2013)
Brad Pitt spends the first act of World War Z running through Philadelphia streets while a city tears itself apart in real time. That opening sequence still holds up as pure chaos filmmaking, tight and terrifying. Somewhere around the Israel wall sequence, though, the zombie outbreak turns into a globe-trotting action movie with a vaccine plot. Apocalyptic horror becomes a summer blockbuster, and the dread gets left behind in Philly. | © Paramount Pictures

A rotting abbey, a cursed relic, and candlelight that never quite reaches the corners. The Nun spends its opening stretch building something genuinely unsettling out of shadows and silence. Something is driving that truck, and for forty minutes Jeepers Creepers refuses to show you what. The sibling leads stumble through back roads and abandoned churches while dread builds with almost no exposition at all. Nobody in this isolated settlement is allowed to ask what's actually out in those woods. The Village rides that restraint for most of its runtime, letting red cloaks and rustling trees do the work. The twist arrives and reframes everything, which is the point, but it also drains the forest of its menace instantly. Six women, one cave system, and no clear way back to the surface. The Descent earns its reputation in the opening hour purely through geography, bodies wedged into tunnels barely wide enough to breathe in. A woman shows up to a rental house already occupied by a stranger, and for half an hour Barbarian is one of the tensest things in the genre. Georgina Campbell's instincts are the whole engine, every hallway and locked door doing real work. Then the basement goes somewhere nobody asked for, and a feral figure named the Mother turns the film into a different movie entirely. Grief wears Essie Davis down long before anything supernatural shows up, and that's the point of The Babadook. A pop-up book, a widow, a kid nobody believes, all of it building dread out of exhaustion rather than jump scares. Once the book's creature starts actually prowling the house in physical form, the film trades a mother's unraveling for a guy in a coat and top hat. Bill Skarsgård built a performance out of stillness and wrong angles, barely needing effects to make Georgie's death land.
