15 Master Manipulators in Favorite Movies

1-15

Playing everyone around them.

Cropped Norman Stansfield Léon The Professional 1994

15. Norman Stansfield

Gary Oldman spends most of Léon: The Professional popping pills and screaming about Beethoven before he kills anyone. Norman Stansfield is a DEA agent, which makes the badge scarier than the gun. He does not manipulate through charm or lies, he does it by making his own volatility the only variable in the room. People forget how little he actually has to do to get an entire apartment building to comply. | © Sony Pictures Releasing
Gordon Gekko

14. Gordon Gekko

"Greed, for lack of a better word, is good," Gordon Gekko tells a room of shareholders in 1987, and the line outlived the movie that warned against it. Oliver Stone built Wall Street to be a takedown of the Reagan era trading floor. Instead business students started quoting Gekko's speech in job interviews. The gap between what the film meant and what it produced is the whole argument right there. | © 20th Century Fox
Cropped Catherine Tramell

13. Catherine Tramell

A single scene in an interrogation room is the reason Basic Instinct still gets brought up thirty years later. Catherine Tramell uncrosses her legs, answers every accusation with another question, and walks out having given the detectives nothing. Sharon Stone has said she didn't fully know what the final shot would show until it screened. Whether Catherine is guilty was never really the point of the scene, her control of the room was. | © TriStar Pictures
Frank Underwood

12. Frank Underwood

Frank Underwood talks straight to the camera in the very first episode of House of Cards and tells you he just killed a dog with his bare hands to end its suffering. That direct address is the whole trick. Kevin Spacey narrates his own manipulations so openly that viewers started rooting for him anyway. Netflix released all thirteen episodes of season one on the same day in 2013, and people still debate whether that binge format made Frank's charm harder to resist or easier to see through. | © Netflix
Cropped Annie Wilkes

11. Annie Wilkes

Annie Wilkes breaks Paul Sheldon's ankles with a sledgehammer in Misery and calls it love the entire time. Kathy Bates won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1991 for the role, the only time a horror performance has taken that category. Stephen King wrote Annie after his own experience with obsessive fans, which is why the devotion never reads as exaggeration. She never once thinks of herself as the villain of her own story. | © Columbia Pictures
Cropped The Wolf of Wall Street 2013 Jordan Belfort

10. Jordan Belfort

Jordan Belfort tells a room full of stockbrokers to sell him a pen, and every version of that pitch becomes a lesson in wanting. The Wolf of Wall Street runs three hours and Terence Winter's script barely slows down to let you judge him. Leonardo DiCaprio narrates straight to camera like he's recruiting the audience too. The real Belfort served 22 months in prison, less time than most of his victims spent broke. | © Paramount Pictures
Kathryn Merteuil

9. Kathryn Merteuil (1999)

Manipulation, in Kathryn Merteuil's world, is just a bet with better clothes. Cruel Intentions has her wager her stepbrother can't seduce a headmaster's daughter, and Sarah Michelle Gellar plays the whole thing like it costs her nothing. She keeps a journal that reads like a battle log, not a diary. By the end the game has a body count, and she still walks away looking bored. | © Sony Pictures Releasing
Cropped The Talented Mr Ripley 1999 Tom Ripley

8. Tom Ripley

Nobody in The Talented Mr. Ripley catches on until it's far too late to matter. Tom Ripley borrows a name, a wardrobe, and eventually a dead man's whole biography without flinching once. Matt Damon plays him soft-spoken and eager to please, which is exactly what makes the lies land. Patricia Highsmith wrote the original novel in 1955, and Ripley still got away with murder decades before this adaptation did. | © Paramount Pictures
Louis Bloom from Nightcrawler

7. Lou Bloom

A stolen bike and a police scanner is where Lou Bloom's whole career starts. Nightcrawler watches him film car wrecks and shootings for cash, then edit the footage to make the violence look worse. Jake Gyllenhaal reportedly lost over 30 pounds for the role, and the gauntness reads like hunger with no bottom. He never raises his voice once, because he never has to. | © Open Road Films
Cropped American Psycho 2000 Patrick Bateman

6. Patrick Bateman

Business cards get more screen time in American Psycho than most people's backstories do. Patrick Bateman recites Huey Lewis trivia right before he picks up an axe, and Christian Bale plays both halves without a seam showing. Mary Harron directed the film in 2000, working from Bret Easton Ellis's novel that publishers dropped before release over its violence. The film cut most of that violence, and somehow the charm is what still unsettles people. | © Lmurius/Lionsgate
Cropped The Devil Wears Prada 2006 Miranda Priestly

5. Miranda Priestly

Meryl Streep based part of Miranda Priestly's stillness on several real fashion editors, and never raised her voice once in The Devil Wears Prada. The famous cerulean sweater monologue runs over two minutes with barely a change in tone. That's the trick, she never needs volume to win a room. Andy spends the whole film learning that silence can be a threat too. | © 20th Century Fox
Keyser Söze

4. Keyser Söze

"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist," Verbal Kint tells his interrogator near the end of The Usual Suspects. Kevin Spacey narrates almost the entire film, which means every detail arrives through a source with obvious reasons to lie. The office set where Kint's confession unfolds was built from objects the crew spotted in the actual room. People still argue over how much of what he said was even partly true. | © Gramercy Pictures
Christoph Waltz Hans Landa

3. Hans Landa

Christoph Waltz spends the opening scene of Inglourious Basterds asking a French farmer polite questions about his cows before the conversation turns into a death sentence. Hans Landa switches between English, French, German, and Italian in that single scene, and Waltz actually spoke all four himself. Quentin Tarantino has said he almost shelved the script because he didn't think an actor like Landa existed. The horror isn't the violence, it's how long he makes you wait for it. | © The Weinstein Company
Cropped Amy Dunne

2. Amy Dunne

A diary, a staged crime scene, and a disappearance timed for maximum press coverage. That's the machine Amy Dunne builds in Gone Girl, and Gillian Flynn wrote both the novel and the screenplay herself. Amy's "Cool Girl" monologue runs close to four minutes of pure unbroken control over how she's perceived. Nick never actually catches her, she simply decides the performance is over. | © 20th Century Fox
Cropped Anthony Hopkins Hannibal Lecter

1. Hannibal Lecter

Only sixteen minutes of screen time in The Silence of the Lambs belong to Hannibal Lecter, and it won Anthony Hopkins the 1992 Oscar for Best Actor. He never touches Clarice Starling once, yet extracts pieces of her childhood she hadn't told anyone. Thomas Harris built the character partly from real forensic psychiatrists he interviewed for research. A glass wall separates him from every victim in that cell, and somehow it's the least protected anyone in the film ever is. | © Orion Pictures
