Blade Runner — 15. Blade Runner (1982)
Ridley Scott's Blade Runner lost money against E.T. in the summer of 1982 and got mixed reviews on release. Warner Bros pushed a studio cut with a tacked-on happy ending and voiceover Harrison Ford has said he deliberately performed badly to discourage. Home video and Scott's 1992 director's cut changed the conversation completely. Now film schools teach its lighting the way they teach Rembrandt. | © Warner Bros

Cropped Troll 2 — 14. Troll 2 (1990)
Nobody involved in Troll 2 intended to make a comedy, which is exactly why it works as one. The 1990 film has no actual trolls in it, only goblins, a detail even the director has admitted made no sense. George Hardy, the small-town dentist who played the dad, didn't act again until fans tracked him down decades later. The Room — 13. The Room (2003)
Tommy Wiseau spent a reported six million dollars of his own money making The Room in 2003, and nobody has ever gotten a straight answer on where it came from. Screenings started as jokes passed between friends before turning into midnight shows with plastic spoons thrown at the screen. Al Pacino's Tony Montana got savaged by critics in 1983, with Roger Ebert one of the few who defended it at the time. Rap and hip hop culture adopted the film's imagery within a decade, long before Hollywood came around to it. Posters of Tony behind his desk, gun raised, ended up in dorm rooms that never bothered watching the whole thing. Jeff Bridges based The Dude partly on a real producer friend of the Coen brothers named Jeff Dowd. The Big Lebowski made barely more than its budget back during its 1998 theatrical run. College campuses kept it alive on VHS, and by 2002 the first Lebowski Fest had launched in Louisville. Wallace Shawn's Vizzini says "Inconceivable!" so often in The Princess Bride that it stopped meaning anything, which was the joke. William Goldman wrote the line into his own 1973 novel long before the 1987 film existed. Mandy Patinkin's Inigo Montoya even calls it out onscreen, telling him the word doesn't mean what he thinks it means. Leonardo DiCaprio spent weeks studying old Quaalude footage before shooting the parking lot crawl in The Wolf of Wall Street. Martin Scorsese let the scene run long because DiCaprio kept finding new physical bits on set in 2013. The stairs, the car, the phone cord, none of it was in the original script in that form. Viggo Mortensen actually broke two toes kicking a helmet during the filming of The Fellowship of the Ring. Peter Jackson kept the take because Mortensen's scream and stumble looked completely real, and it was. The 2001 film never explains why Aragorn suddenly hops around clutching his foot. Samuel L. Jackson delivers the Ezekiel 25:17 speech in Pulp Fiction right before Jules and Vincent open fire in 1994. Quentin Tarantino wrote most of the passage himself, since the real biblical verse reads nothing like it. The speech was meant to set up a character's crisis of faith later in the film. Heath Ledger blew himself up wrong on purpose in The Dark Knight, and that's exactly why the scene works. The detonator misfires, the Joker looks annoyed, and he shrugs before trying again. Sylvester Stallone wrote the raw-egg breakfast into Rocky as a quick, cheap way to show discipline without dialogue. Five raw eggs, one glass, swallowed whole before dawn training.
