Clue — 15. Clue (1985)
Paramount released Clue in 1985 with three different endings, and which one you got depended on which theater you walked into. Jonathan Lynn directed the film based on the Hasbro board game, a first for adapting a game with no fixed plot into a movie. Audiences complained at the time, but home video eventually stitched all three endings together into one screening. Timecode — 14. Timecode (2000)
Ninety-six minutes, four cameras, one continuous take, zero cuts. That's Timecode, Mike Figgis's 2000 experiment where the screen splits into quadrants and every actor improvised from a fifteen-page outline rather than a script. Sound gets mixed live between the four feeds to guide your attention, since nothing was ever edited after the fact. Strange Days — 13. Strange Days (1995)
Kathryn Bigelow built Strange Days around a fictional device called SQUID, which lets people record and relive other people's memories like a tape. Released in 1995, the film imagined Los Angeles on the edge of Y2K a full four years before the date meant anything to anyone. James Cameron co-wrote and produced it with Bigelow, his ex-wife, off a story he'd been developing since the late 1980s. Cropped all that jazz 1979 — 12. All That Jazz (1979)
A director cuts open his own chest, on screen, and calls it entertainment. Bob Fosse made All That Jazz in 1979 as a barely disguised account of his own heart attack and open heart surgery from 1974. Roy Scheider plays the Fosse stand-in, choreographing musical numbers while chain smoking and popping pills between rehearsals. No one had turned their own hospital chart into a full blown musical before, complete with an ending that doesn't pretend to survive. | © 20th Century Fox

Cropped the truman show — 11. The Truman Show (1998)
Peter Weir's 1998 film asks what happens when a man's entire life turns out to be a television set. Jim Carrey plays Truman Burbank, unaware that Seahaven Island is a soundstage and everyone around him is an actor. The film predates reality TV as a genre, since Big Brother didn't air in the US until 2000. Andrew Niccol's script had been circulating since the early 1990s, years before anyone lived their life on camera for strangers to watch. | © Paramount Pictures

Cropped network 1976 — 10. Network (1976)
Paddy Chayefsky wrote the line "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore" for a newscaster having an on-air breakdown, and audiences in 1976 didn't have a cable news culture yet to compare it to. Howard Beale rants his way to higher ratings rather than getting pulled off air, which is the joke that stopped being funny once real networks started doing exactly that. Chayefsky won his third Oscar for the script. Nobody had put a psychotic anchor at the center of a satire and let the network reward him for it. | © MGM

The Conversation 1974 — 9. The Conversation (1974)
Gene Hackman plays a surveillance expert so consumed by guilt over his own eavesdropping that he tears his apartment apart looking for a bug that was never there. Francis Ford Coppola shot The Conversation in 1974, wedged between the two Godfather films, on a budget under two million dollars. Walter Murch's sound design does the real storytelling, replaying one ambiguous line of dialogue until its meaning flips entirely. Cropped Adaptation — 8. Adaptation. (2002)
Charlie Kaufman gave himself a twin brother named Donald in the script for Adaptation. Donald doesn't exist, but both Kaufmans got an Oscar nomination for writing the screenplay together in 2002. Nicolas Cage plays them both, one paralyzed by self-doubt and one cheerfully churning out a thriller nobody asked for. Spike Jonze directed a movie about the impossibility of adapting a book that spirals into becoming the very movie it can't make. | © Sony Pictures

Cropped Being John Malkovich — 7. Being John Malkovich (1999)
A puppeteer finds a tiny door behind a filing cabinet on the 7½th floor of an office building, and it leads directly into John Malkovich's head. Spike Jonze directed this from Charlie Kaufman's first produced screenplay, released by USA Films in 1999. Malkovich plays a version of himself who eventually crawls through the portal into his own subconscious, which is as strange on screen as it sounds on paper. John Cusack's character discovers he can control another man's body for exactly fifteen minutes before getting spat out onto the New Jersey Turnpike. | © USA Films

Russian Ark movie cropped processed by imagy — 6. Russian Ark (2002)
One take, ninety minutes, no cuts. Alexander Sokurov shot Russian Ark in the Hermitage Museum in December 2002, moving through three centuries of Russian history across thirty-three rooms with a single Steadicam operator, Tilman Büttner. The crew got one usable take on their third attempt after two earlier days ended in technical failures. Cropped Dogville 2003 Grace — 5. Dogville (2003)
Nicole Kidman spends all of Dogville in a town with no walls, just chalk lines on a soundstage floor marking houses and streets. Lars von Trier shot the entire 2003 film this way, forcing actors to mime opening doors that don't exist. The bareness makes every act of cruelty in the story harder to look away from. Memento — 4. Memento (2000)
Backwards is the only way Memento makes sense, and Christopher Nolan built the entire 2000 film around that decision. Guy Pearce plays a man who can't form new memories, so the scenes run in reverse chronological order to put you inside his confusion. Newmarket Films picked up a movie that most studios had passed on for being too confusing to market. The condition Pearce's character has, anterograde amnesia, had barely been explored in mainstream film before this. | © Newmarket Films

Twenty minutes, three different ways, one dead boyfriend to save. Tom Tykwer's Run Lola Run hit German theaters in 1998 before Sony Pictures Classics brought it to the US, replaying the same stretch of Berlin with small changes that snowball into wildly different endings. Franka Potente runs through the entire thing, and the film clocks in at under 81 minutes total. Cropped The Blair Witch Project — 2. The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Eight days of footage shot on a budget under $60,000 turned into one of the highest-grossing independent films ever made. Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez told their three actors to keep the cameras rolling and improvise their own fear, with Artisan Entertainment later marketing The Blair Witch Project as if the tapes were real. Heather Donahue's shaky, direct-to-camera apology became the image people still associate with found footage. Breathless — 1. Breathless (1960)

Jean Seberg sells newspapers on the Champs-Élysées in a scene that shouldn't hold together, and somehow does. Jean-Luc Godard shot Breathless in 1960 with a handheld camera and jump cuts that ignored decades of continuity editing rules, chopping time inside single conversations. Producer Georges de Beauregard gave him a tiny budget, which pushed Godard toward improvising scenes on actual Paris streets instead of sets.
