15 Movies That Spoiled Their Biggest Twists in the Trailers

1-15

The trailer gave it away.

Speed

15. Speed (1994)

A bus that can't slow down only works if you don't know what's waiting underneath it. Speed's marketing handed over the bomb's rules, the stakes, and basically the entire back half of the plot before anyone bought a ticket. Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock still carried the tension scene by scene, which says more about the direction than the ad campaign. The movie survived its own trailer, but it shouldn't have had to. | © 20th Century Fox
Quarantine

14. Quarantine (2008)

Found footage lives or dies on not knowing what's behind the next door. Quarantine's promotional push couldn't resist showing the infected tenants mid-attack, draining the apartment building of its dread before the cameras even started rolling. The remake of [REC] needed claustrophobia and confusion to work, and ads built around jump scares undercut both. People walked in already braced for the exact thing meant to ambush them. | © Screen Gems
Cropped Kingsman The Golden Circle

13. Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)

Nobody expected Kingsman's trailers to casually confirm Harry Hart was back from the dead. Kingsman: The Golden Circle spent its first film killing Colin Firth off with real weight, then undid it in marketing before the sequel even opened. That twist was supposed to be the emotional gut punch of the movie. Instead it played like old news the moment the lights went down. | © 20th Century Fox
Oblivion

12. Oblivion (2013)

Jack Harper's entire identity hinges on a reveal that the ad campaign gave away in broad daylight. Oblivion builds its first act around the mystery of what Tom Cruise's character actually is, then the trailers basically spell out the clone angle months early. Morgan Freeman's role as a resistance leader loses most of its punch once viewers already know what side of the story they're watching. A movie built on slow-burn revelation got marketed like a straightforward action flick, and the mismatch shows. | © Universal Pictures
The Cabin in the Woods

11. The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

Horror trailers usually sell scares, not the entire structure of the universe behind them. The Cabin in the Woods relies on audiences believing they're watching a standard slasher setup before the control room and the ancient gods show up. Marketing that leaned on Chris Hemsworth and genre-savvy humor hinted at the meta layer well before the midpoint twist could land on its own. The movie is still clever enough to survive that, but it deserved an audience walking in blind. | © Lionsgate
Cropped The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers

10. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

Treebeard's decision to march on Isengard was supposed to land as a payoff, not a preview. New Line's trailers for The Two Towers showed the Ents flooding Saruman's tower with water, giving away the entire siege before anyone bought a ticket. That sequence closes out a huge chunk of the Fellowship's arc, and the marketing treated it like a two-second thrill clip. Fantasy epics rely on scale catching you off guard, and this one got flattened into a highlight reel. | © New Line Cinema
Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice

9. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

Doomsday showing up in the trailers told you exactly how little Warner Bros trusted the film to sell itself on Batman and Superman alone. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice built its whole back half around a monster reveal that ads had already burned through months earlier. Worse, the "Martha" moment and the kryptonite spear got teased enough that the film's big swings felt pre-chewed. A story about two icons finding common ground got sold like a monster mash instead. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
Companion 2025

8. Companion (2025)

Sophie's true nature is the entire engine of Companion, and New Line's marketing ran it right into the ground. Calling her a robot in the trailer erases the slow unease the opening act is built to create. Without that mystery, the first thirty minutes turn into a waiting game instead of a creeping realization. A film engineered around a reveal got reduced to a premise before anyone sat down. | © New Line Cinema
Abigail from Abigail

7. Abigail (2024)

A ballerina locked in a mansion sounds like simple horror bait, until Universal's trailers let the fangs show. Abigail hides a vampire twist that reframes the entire kidnapping plot, and the marketing handed it over before the opening scene even played. That choice drains tension from every early conversation between Abigail and her captors. Once the secret is gone, what's left is just watching people slowly catch up to what the audience already knows. | © Universal Pictures
Cropped From Dusk Till Dawn

6. From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

Vampires don't belong in a kidnapping thriller, yet that's exactly what the trailers for From Dusk Till Dawn promised from the jump. The film spends its first half as a tense crime story before flipping into full creature chaos at the Titty Twister. That shift is supposed to blindside you, snapping genres halfway through the runtime. Marketing that leads with the monsters turns a clever bait and switch into just another vampire movie. | © Miramax
Cropped The Worlds End

5. The World's End (2013)

Five old friends on a pub crawl sounds harmless, until the trailer for The World's End starts cutting to blue blood and robotic strength. That single choice undid the whole setup Edgar Wright built around a nostalgic night going sideways. The pacing of the actual film depends on that shift landing as a surprise, and the marketing handed it over early. What should have been a gut punch became a detail audiences were just waiting to see confirmed. | © Focus Features
Goldeneye

4. GoldenEye (1995)

GoldenEye's trailers spoiled one of its biggest twists by revealing Alec Trevelyan's betrayal. Sean Bean's Agent 006 seemingly dies during the opening mission, only to return as the villain Janus. Showing him confront Pierce Brosnan's Bond in the marketing robbed audiences of a major surprise. | © MGM/United Artists

The Island

3. The Island (2005)

Cloning conspiracies need secrecy to work, and The Island blew past that requirement before opening weekend. Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson play residents of a sealed facility who believe they're the last survivors of a contaminated Earth. The trailers openly showed the outside world, the real purpose of the compound, and the fact that these characters exist purely to be harvested. Michael Bay built an entire first act around a lie the marketing refused to keep. | © DreamWorks/Warner Bros.
What Lies Beneath

2. What Lies Beneath (2000)

Something is wrong in Claire and Norman's house in What Lies Beneath, and the ads wasted no time saying exactly what. Robert Zemeckis spent the first half of the film building dread around a presence nobody could name. Posters and trailers went ahead and confirmed it was the ghost of a murdered woman connected to Norman himself. A slow haunted house setup got turned into a plain murder mystery before the movie even started. | © DreamWorks
Cast Away 2000

1. Cast Away (2000)

Four years pass in near silence once Chuck Noland washes up alone, and that isolation was the entire point of Cast Away. Every trailer still found room to show his rescue, his beard, and his return to a world that moved on without him. Tom Hanks carries most of the film solo, which only works if his fate feels uncertain the whole way through. Marketing decided a happy ending made better advertising than a mystery ever could. | © 20th Century Fox

A great twist depends on surprise, which makes it all the more painful when the marketing team spoils it before you even buy a ticket. Here are 15 movies that gave away their biggest twists in the trailers.
