15 Murder Mystery Movies Where Guessed the Killer Immediately

1-15

Too obvious from the start.

The Weekend Away

15. The Weekend Away (2022)

A woman wakes up hungover with no memory of what happened to her best friend, and The Weekend Away spends ninety minutes pretending that's a mystery. The culprit gets telegraphed through a single too-calm conversation early on, the kind of scene that only exists to clear someone's name later. Croatia looks great. The plot does not return the favor. | © Netflix
Identity

14. Identity (2003)

Ten strangers trapped at a motel during a storm start dying one by one, and Identity wants you thinking serial killer long before it admits what's actually going on. The twist reroutes the whole premise into psychological territory, but the groundwork gets laid early through details that don't add up, like ages and objects that keep repeating. Once the pattern clicks, every death stops feeling like a mystery and starts feeling like a countdown. That shift happens way before the characters catch on. | © Sony Pictures
Mystic River

13. Mystic River (2003)

Grief does a lot of heavy lifting in Mystic River, and that's exactly why the killer's identity stops being the point halfway through. Sean Penn's rage and Tim Robbins' silence pull focus so hard that the actual whodunit plot feels almost like an afterthought bolted onto a story about trauma. The reveal lands, technically, but by then most people have already clocked who did it through sheer process of elimination. Clint Eastwood directed it like a tragedy, not a puzzle, and that's the giveaway. | © Warner Bros.
The Bone Collector

12. The Bone Collector (1999)

A detective paralyzed from the neck down solves crimes from his bed in The Bone Collector, which sounds like a fresh angle until the killer's reveal leans on the most predictable trick in the genre. Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie carry scenes that are genuinely tense on their own terms. The problem is the script keeps pointing at the culprit through clumsy red herrings that don't herring very hard. By the time the big confrontation hits, it plays more like confirmation than surprise. | © Universal Pictures
Edward Norton in Primal Fear

11. Primal Fear (1996)

Edward Norton walks into Primal Fear stuttering and terrified, and that performance alone should have been the tell. The whole courtroom thriller hinges on a defendant whose innocence feels too fragile to be real, and genre fans clocked that fragility as a setup from his first scene. Richard Gere's lawyer spends the movie convinced he's protecting an underdog. Everyone watching at home got there faster than he did. | © Paramount Pictures
The Little Things

10. The Little Things (2021)

Three Oscar winners sat in a room together, and somehow The Little Things still fumbled the handoff. Denzel Washington and Rami Malek chase a killer while Jared Leto drifts around looking exactly as guilty as the script needs him to. The camera lingers on him so lovingly in every scene that suspicion stops being a theory and becomes a formality. Subtlety was available here, and the movie chose something else entirely. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
Crooked House

9. Crooked House (2017)

Agatha Christie wrote Crooked House as a nasty little trick, the kind of ending that was supposed to feel like a gut punch. The 2017 adaptation keeps the twist but forgets to bury the clues, so the culprit's motive sits in plain view from the first family dinner. Glenn Close and Gillian Anderson circle the real suspect so often it starts to feel like a hint. A book built on misdirection ended up on screen without much mist left to direct. | © Sony Pictures Classics
See How They Run

8. See How They Run (2022)

Children's rhymes and backstage murder do not usually share a sentence, but See How They Run tries anyway. Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan investigate a killing tied to a West End production of a Christie play, and the film winks at genre conventions constantly. That self-awareness becomes the problem, because the movie keeps pointing at its own formula until the culprit practically waves. Cleverness about mystery tropes is not the same as writing a mystery that works. | © Searchlight Pictures
Cropped The Girl on the Train

7. The Girl on the Train (2016)

Rachel's blackout drinking in The Girl on the Train is supposed to make every character read as a possible threat. Instead the editing keeps circling one man with a stare the movie clearly thinks is ambiguous but plays as a neon sign. Emily Blunt sells the panic and confusion completely, carrying scenes that the script undercuts around her. Unreliable narration only works if the audience is actually kept in the dark, and here the lights stay mostly on. | © Universal Pictures DreamWorks Pictures
Cropped A Simple Favor

6. A Simple Favor (2018)

Emily shows up in A Simple Favor dressed like a threat before she does a single suspicious thing. Blake Lively plays her with so much coiled menace that Anna Kendrick's friendship with her feels doomed from the first martini lunch. The movie wants a wild reveal about where Emily went, but the tone has already told viewers she is running some kind of long con. Style this loud tends to give away the game underneath it. | © Lionsgate
Cropped Death on the Nile

5. Death on the Nile (2022)

Kenneth Branagh puts himself front and center in Death on the Nile, mustache and all, and the camera never lets you forget it. The real issue is how early the guilty parties start acting guilty, trading glances and alibis that don't add up long before the reveal. Gal Gadot's Linnet spends so much screen time surrounded by people with motive that the mystery narrows itself down for you. Christie wrote misdirection into the bones of this story, and the movie sands most of it away. | © 20th Century Studios
The Pale Blue Eye

4. The Pale Blue Eye (2022)

Christian Bale plays a retired detective called back to West Point in The Pale Blue Eye, hunting whoever is carving up cadets. Edgar Allan Poe shows up as a cadet helping with the case, which sounds like a fun twist until the plot leans on it too hard. The culprit's motive gets telegraphed through grief that the script keeps circling back to, scene after scene. Atmosphere was never the problem here, the pacing of the reveal was. | © Netflix
Cropped murder on the orient express 2017

3. Murder on the Orient Express (2017)

Twelve suspects, one train stuck in snow, and a mustache doing more acting than some of the cast. Kenneth Branagh directs and stars in Murder on the Orient Express, and the ensemble includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Judi Dench. The problem is how the film frames its flashbacks, practically spelling out the group's shared motive before Poirot even starts asking questions. Agatha Christie's twist depends on the audience not seeing the pattern, and this version draws the pattern in bold. | © 20th Century Fox
Scream

2. Scream (1996)

A phone rings, a girl is home alone, and horror movie rules get recited like a checklist. That's the opening of Scream, and it sets up a killer reveal that genre fans could clock from the trivia alone. Billy's behavior throughout the film follows slasher logic so closely that knowing the rules basically hands you his name. Wes Craven built a movie smart enough to mock the formula, then let the formula answer its own question. | © Dimension Films
Cropped Knives Out

1. Knives Out (2019)

Harlan Thrombey is dead, his family is lying, and somehow the least suspicious person in the room turns out to be exactly who you'd guess. Knives Out hands Ana de Armas a condition that makes her incapable of lying without vomiting, which is less a red herring and more a flashing arrow. Chris Evans plays the obvious bad apple so loudly that subtlety stops being part of the plan. Rian Johnson wrote a mystery about a family of liars surrounding the one character the movie refuses to let you doubt. | © Lionsgate
1-15

A good whodunit keeps you guessing, but these films tipped their hand so early that half the audience had the killer pegged before the first act was over. Here are 15 murder mystery movies where you guessed the killer immediately.
