The Best 90s Anime That Still Hold Up

1-16

Sabrina Ahn Sabrina Ahn
TV Shows & Movies - December 26th 2024, 17:00 GMT+1
Magical doremi anniversary

16. Magical DoReMi (1999-2000)

Fighting with the power of music? That's adorable and Magical DoReMi is the anime that did it the best. It's a truly iconic 90s anime that is still beloved by many. It's one of the first truly iconic magical girl shows, settling comfortable alongside big hitters like Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon. | © Toei Animation

Mobile suit gundam wing

15. Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (1995-1996)

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing follows five young pilots sent to Earth from space colonies, piloting advanced mechs called Gundams. Their mission is to combat the oppressive Earth Sphere Alliance and its military force, OZ, in a bid to end tyranny and bring peace to the colonies and Earth. Honestly, one of the most iconic mech shows out there and still a great watch in the 2020s. | © Sunrise

Cardcaport sakura

14. Cardcaptor Sakura (1998-2000)

Cardcaptor Sakura, along with Sailor Moon, grew the magical girl genre immensely. It is cemented as one of the biggest animes of the time and has garnered a huge fanbase. So of course, it has to be added to the list, because even today it's still unforgettable. | © Madhouse

Yu gi oh header

13. Yu-Gi-Oh (1998)

Not many anime have enjoyed as much of a success as Yu-Gi-Oh. The card game has become immensely popular worldwide, spawning entire tournaments and the show also has a multitude of spinoffs and one of the best anime films of all time. So of course, we have to include it in this gallery as a truly iconic show, even if watching it back it seems a bit cringe at times. | © Toei Animation

Digimon adventure

12. Digimon (1999-2000)

Of course, we cannot forget about one of the most iconic anime of the 90s, which has spawned an entire franchise with games, toys and cards. Digimon is one of the biggest shows, especially for western viewers, to have become popular – let's not talk about the later seasons though, okay? | © Toei Animation

Pokemon 1997

11. Pokemon (1997-2002)

The original Pokemon is still iconic to this day and one of the best shows. It first aired in 1997 and into the early 2000s, becoming an iconic and memorable show for any kid who grew up around this time. It's one of the best shows any millenial will think fondly back on. | © OLM

Slam Dunk anime

10. Slam Dunk (1993-1996)

If you think back to some of the most iconic sports anime, they might never exist had it not been for the success that was Slam Dunk. This show is one of the best of the 90s and one anyone should re-watch. | © Toei Animation

Dragon Ball Z

9. Dragon Ball Z (1989-1996)

Sure, Dragon Ball Z first came out in the 80s, but it ran throughout most of the 90s, so we've included it in our list. Almost no other franchise has seen the success of Dragon Ball, and the popularity of Dragon Ball Z is to thank for that. | © Toei Animation

Cowboy bebop poster

8. Cowboy Bebop (1998-1999)

Cowboy Bebop has become a cult classic and has even had a return recently by having skins included in Blizzard Entertainment's Overwatch. This just goes to show that even if the show came out ages ago, it still resonates with people today. | © Sunrise

One Piece Luffy

7. One Piece (1999-Current)

Oda... what is the One Piece? We need to know! One Piece is still running today, and 25 years later we are still as clueless as to what the One Piece is as we were in 1999. Truly a classic show. | © Toei Animation

Great teacher onizuka

6. Great Teacher Onizuka (1999-2000)

If you're looking for something completely different, then Great Teacher Onizuka is worth a peek. While the main protagonist doesn't seem like the greatest at first, you start to realize that he is doing his best for his students and teaching them valuable lessons. | © Pierrot

Detective conan header

5. Detective Conan (1996-Current)

Detective Conan, Case Closed has been one of the best and most fun shows since it first started airing in 1996. It's still going strong and worth picking up from the beginning. | © TMS Entertainment

Trigun 1998

4. Trigun (1998)

While this iteration of Trigun might have more filler than actual episodes, the manga artist has stated that the filler episodes of the anime are actually canon at this point. Because of an illness, the manga had to be put on hold, which is why the anime has so much filler. But it's still an incredible show with loveable characters and great action scenes. | © Madhouse

Ghost in the shell 1995

3. Ghost in the Shell (1995)

Ghost in the Shell is about a cyborg cop investigating a mysterious hacker. The series explores themes of identity and consciousness in a world where humans merge with technology. It's truly amazing and worth watching. | © Production I.G

Neon genesis evangelion anime

2. Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995-1996)

Now, while I personally have a lot of beef with this series, most people would recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion... so I guess I had to add it to the list. But honestly, you can skip if you want. | © Gainax

Sailor moon 90s

1. Sailor Moon (1992-1993)

Sailor Moon is probably the greatest show from the 90s. It spawned an entire genre of magical girls and while it might not be a truly "feminist" show, it's still a great show which encourages young girls to be strong. Even today, the original is worth watching. | © Toei Animation
