15 TV Characters Who Were Never Supposed to Become Fan Favorites

1-15

Stole the show by accident.

Janitor

15. Janitor (2001-2010)

Neil Flynn's Janitor on Scrubs was never given a name because the writers kept meaning to cut the character entirely. He started as a one-off antagonist for J.D. in the 2001 pilot, built on a single running gag about a missing shopping cart. Nine seasons later he was doing full musical numbers and fake backstories about Herve the barback. A joke with no name outlasted most characters who had one. | © ABC
Donna Meagle

14. Donna Meagle (2009-2015)

Retta was hired for Parks and Recreation with a handful of lines and no surname for her character beyond Donna Meagle. The writers built out her whole "Treat Yo Self" persona later, once they noticed how much the actress brought to throwaway scenes. By 2013 that phrase had its own Parks-branded merchandise line. A background desk job became one of the show's most quoted exports. | © NBC
Boyd Crowder from Justified

13. Boyd Crowder (2010-2015)

Walton Goggins was cast on Justified expecting Boyd Crowder to die in the pilot, shot by his old friend Raylan Givens. Elmore Leonard, whose novella inspired the 2010 series, reportedly loved Goggins' performance enough to push for the character's survival. Boyd ended up anchoring all six seasons instead of one episode. Few characters get resurrected by the author of the source material. | © FX
April Ludgate

12. April Ludgate (2009-2015)

Aubrey Plaza auditioned for Parks and Recreation with barely any context on who April Ludgate was supposed to be. The role started as a bored intern with maybe two scenes an episode back in 2009. Plaza's deadpan delivery got her bumped to a series regular within the first season. The intern nobody named became the moral center of the Parks department by the finale. | © NBC
Benjamin Linus from Lost

11. Ben Linus (2004-2010)

Michael Emerson signed on for Lost in 2006 for a three-episode arc as Henry Gale, a prisoner in a hatch. The producers liked him so much they rewrote him into Ben Linus, leader of the Others. Emerson won a 2009 Emmy for the role he was originally contracted to play for weeks, not years. A temporary captive became the show's most important antagonist. | © ABC
Omar Little from The Wire

10. Omar Little (2002-2008)

Barack Obama once named Omar Little his favorite character on television, which says something about how far David Simon's plan bent. Omar was written as a minor stickup artist targeting drug corners on The Wire. Michael K. Williams based the character's scar and swagger on real men he knew from Brooklyn and East Flatbush. By season two he was structuring entire episodes around his whistle alone. | © HBO
Chandler Bing

9. Chandler Bing (1994-2004)

Nobody on the Friends writing staff set out to make Chandler Bing the funniest one in the room. Matthew Perry was cast largely for his timing, and the writers kept feeding him the sarcastic asides that had no other home. By the later seasons he was delivering entire jokes built from a single trailing sentence and a raised eyebrow. A defense mechanism turned into the show's most reliable laugh. | © NBC
Andy Dwyer

8. Andy Dwyer (2009-2015)

Chris Pratt showed up on Parks and Recreation in 2009 with a contract for seven episodes. Andy Dwyer was supposed to be Ann's deadbeat boyfriend who falls in a pit and disappears once he heals up. Amy Poehler and the writers liked what Pratt was doing enough to keep rewriting his exit out of the script. He ended up marrying April Ludgate and staying for all seven seasons. | © NBC
Fonzie

7. Fonzie (1974-1984)

Happy Days in 1974 was built around Ron Howard's Richie Cunningham, with Fonzie sketched in as a minor greaser for contrast. Henry Winkler brought a specific stillness to the leather jacket that the network hadn't planned for, and ABC reportedly worried the character was too dangerous for early time slots. By the third season the show's title sequence effectively belonged to him. A jukebox punch and a thumbs up outlasted the family he was supposed to be supporting. | © ABC
Castiel fom Supernatural

6. Castiel (2005-2020)

Misha Collins joined Supernatural in season four for what was billed as a short arc introducing an angel named Castiel. The plan, according to showrunner Eric Kripke, was to wrap the character's story within that single season. Fan response kept him on the call sheet through fifteen seasons total, long after the original arc closed. Few guest angels get a series finale built partly around them. | © The CW
How I Met Your Mother Barney Stinson

5. Barney Stinson (2005-2014)

Neil Patrick Harris almost didn't get cast because the network wanted someone older for Barney Stinson. How I Met Your Mother creators wrote him as a minor foil to Ted, not a lead. His "suit up" catchphrase and the Playbook spinoffs turned him into the show's real engine by season two. CBS ended up building entire episodes around a character who started as a side joke. | © CBS
Spike

4. Spike (1997-2003)

A vampire named Spike showed up on Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1997 with a two season death sentence attached. James Marsters has said in interviews that Joss Whedon originally planned to kill Spike off fast. Fan reaction kept him alive long enough to get a soul, a spinoff appearance on Angel, and a redemption arc nobody scripted at the start. The villain outlasted the plan built to remove him. | © The WB
Jesse Pinkman

3. Jesse Pinkman (2008-2013)

Vince Gilligan wanted Jesse Pinkman dead by the end of season one of Breaking Bad. The 2007-2008 writers' strike cut that first season short and left Jesse alive by accident. Aaron Paul's performance changed the math enough that Gilligan rebuilt entire seasons around him instead. A character with an expiration date became the show's emotional center for five years. | © AMC
Daryl Dixon

2. Daryl Dixon (2010-2022)

Nobody in a comic book ever met Daryl Dixon because he doesn't exist on the page. Norman Reedus auditioned for a different role on The Walking Dead and producers wrote Daryl in specifically for him. By 2018 he was popular enough to headline his own spinoff series decades after the source material stopped needing him. A character invented for TV became the franchise's most recognizable face. | © AMC
Steve Urkel

1. Steve Urkel (1989-1998)

Jaleel White walked onto Family Matters in 1989 for a single guest episode as a neighbor kid named Steve Urkel. The role was supposed to end there, with no return planned by the writers. Audience response brought him back so often that by season two he'd become a permanent cast member with top billing. A one-episode extra ended up outlasting most of the family he interrupted. | © ABC

Some characters were written as minor players or one-episode footnotes, only for audiences to latch on so hard the writers had to keep them. Here are 15 TV characters who were never supposed to become fan favorites.
