15 TV Episodes That Changed Everything About Their Shows

1-15

Before and after.

TV Shows & Movies - October 5th 2026, 19:00 GMT+2
Attack on Titan 22 Warrior22

15. Attack on Titan — "Warrior" (2013-2023)

Reiner Braun rips himself open on a rooftop in Stohess District, and suddenly Attack on Titan isn't about walls anymore. The 2013 episode reveals that two of Eren's own squad mates are enemy Titan shifters who infiltrated humanity for years. Isayama had planted Reiner and Bertholt in plain sight since episode one, background faces nobody tracked. The show stops being a monster story here and turns into one about betrayal you can't see coming. | © Crunchyroll
Agents of S H I E L D 22 Turn Turn Turn22

14. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — "Turn, Turn, Turn" (2013-2020)

Nobody making Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. could talk about "Turn, Turn, Turn" honestly until Captain America: The Winter Soldier hit theaters the same week in April 2014. That film revealed S.H.I.E.L.D. had been infiltrated by Hydra from its founding, and this episode detonated the same twist inside the show. Agent Ward turns out to be Hydra, Nick Fury fakes his death, and the whole agency collapses in one hour. Marvel had built a TV show designed to blow up on a schedule set by its own movie division. | © ABC
Star Trek Deep Space Nine 22 The Way of the Warrior22

13. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine — "The Way of the Warrior" (1993-1999)

Worf walks onto the station in "The Way of the Warrior" and Deep Space Nine stops being the quiet Star Trek show. This 1995 two-parter marked the first time a cast member from one Trek series joined another mid-run, with Michael Dorn moving over from The Next Generation. The episode also reignites war with the Cardassians and introduces the Klingon-Federation alliance collapsing in real time. Deep Space Nine had already been the darkest Trek on air, and this is where it stopped apologizing for that. | © Paramount
Dexter 22 The Getaway22

12. Dexter — "The Getaway" (2006-2013)

Rita Morgan dies in a bathtub, and the camera lingers on baby Harrison sitting in her blood. "The Getaway" closed season four of Dexter in December 2009 by having the Trinity Killer, played by John Lithgow, do what Dexter never saw coming. Dexter had spent the whole season hunting Trinity as a kind of dark mirror to his own life, and the show punishes that arrogance in its final minute. Every season after has to answer for a finale that refused to let its killer win clean. | © Showtime
The Shield 22 The End of the Beginning22

11. The Shield — "The End of the Beginning" (2002-2008)

Vic Mackey shoots Detective Terry Crowley in the pilot, and by season five's "The End of the Beginning," that bullet finally comes home. Aired in 2006, the episode has Internal Affairs officer Jon Kavanaugh formally connect Vic to the murder for the first time. The Shield had spent four seasons letting Vic slip every trap, and this is the one that stops resetting the board. Michael Chiklis plays the moment less like fear and more like a man watching his own math finally fail. | © FX
MASH 22 Abyssinia Henry22

10. M*A*S*H — "Abyssinia, Henry" (1972-1983)

McLean Stevenson wanted off MAS*H, so the writers sent Henry Blake home in 1975 with a discharge and a plane ticket. Then Radar walks into the operating room and says the plane went down in the Sea of Japan, no survivors. CBS got angry phone calls that night from viewers who thought comedy shows weren't allowed to do that. The cast wasn't told the ending in advance, and Alan Alda's reaction on camera is the first take. | © CBS
Westworld 22 The Bicameral Mind22

9. Westworld — "The Bicameral Mind" (2016-2022)

Two timelines running through Westworld turn out to be thirty years apart, and "The Bicameral Mind" is where the gap finally shows itself. Dolores and old William collapse into the same person once the math lands. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy built the whole first season around hiding that structure from the audience. HBO's ratings for the finale nearly doubled the show's premiere, proof the trick worked before anyone could complain about it. | © HBO
The Good Place 22 Michaels Gambit

8. The Good Place — "Michael's Gambit" (2016-2020)

Four strangers in the afterlife get told the truth in the final minutes of "Michael's Gambit," and it's not the truth they were promised. Michael, played by Ted Danson, reveals the neighborhood was never heaven at all. Mike Schur has said the twist was locked in before the writers even broke the pilot. NBC aired it in 2017, and the show spent the next three seasons rebuilding itself around a lie a demon told for fun. | © NBC
Connors Wedding Succession

7. Succession — "Connor's Wedding" (2018-2023)

"Connor's Wedding" spends its first twenty minutes on small talk about airplane wifi and hors d'oeuvres, then Kendall gets the phone call in a hallway. Logan Roy is already dead before anyone at the wedding finds out. Jesse Armstrong's writers room made the choice to kill him off screen, no hospital scene, no last words. Succession had spent three seasons building toward a death it refused to let anyone witness happen. | © HBO
Buffy the Vampire Slayer 22 Surprise

6. Buffy the Vampire Slayer — "Surprise" (1997-2003)

Angel loses his soul the night he sleeps with Buffy, and "Surprise" is the episode that sets the trap. Joss Whedon wrote the curse so one moment of happiness undoes it completely. The show aired this two-parter in January 1998, right as Buffy turns eighteen. What was a monster-of-the-week format up to that point became a season built around a boyfriend who wakes up as the villain. | © The WB
Mr Robot 22 Proxy Authentication Required22

5. Mr. Robot — "Proxy Authentication Required" (2015-2019)

Sam Esmail hid the biggest twist of season one in plain sight, then let "Proxy Authentication Required" say it out loud. Elliot's father died in 1994, which means the man Elliot's been talking to as Mr. Robot was never there. USA aired this in 2015, and the show's ratings jumped once people realized every scene with Christian Slater needed a rewatch. Nothing after this episode plays the same way twice. | © USA Network
Lost We Have to Go Back

4. Lost — We Have to Go Back! (2004-2010)

A polar bear on a tropical island was strange enough, but "We Have to Go Back!" reframed the whole show as a flash forward instead of a flashback. Jack Shephard says the title line in 2007, three seasons into Lost's run on ABC. Matthew Fox delivers it with a beard and a bottle, which alone told you time had moved wrong. The mystery stopped being about the island and became about escaping it. | © ABC
Game of Thrones Baelor

3. Game of Thrones — Baelor (2011-2019)

Ned Stark keeps his head in "Baelor," and HBO lost its lead actor nine episodes into the show. Sean Bean had been marketed as the central figure of Game of Thrones since its 2011 premiere. George R.R. Martin wrote the death into the books years earlier, but television rarely kills its stars this early or this plainly. Every plot armor assumption a viewer walks in with dies on that scaffold too. | © HBO
The Sopranos 22 College22

2. The Sopranos — College (1999-2007)

Tony Soprano strangles a man with his bare hands in "College," and HBO executives reportedly worried the scene would break the show before it found an audience. David Chase insisted on keeping it in the 1999 episode despite the network's hesitation. Tony's daughter Meadow spends the same hour looking at colleges, oblivious to what her father does a few miles away. The show never again lets you separate the family man from the killer so cleanly. | © HBO
Breaking Bad Face Off

1. Breaking Bad — Face Off (2008-2013)

Walter White dyes his hair back to black and detonates a bomb in a nursing home, and "Face Off" ends with Gus Fring's face half gone in a mirror's reflection. Vince Gilligan and his writers built the whole season four finale around hiding that bomb without a single false cut. Giancarlo Esposito plays Gus adjusting his tie in the final seconds before the blast, a shot AMC ran almost in full. Walter finally wins a war in this episode, and it costs him whatever was left of the man Bryan Cranston played in season one. | © AMC
