LoL Worlds 2021: Takeaways from Day 1

We take a look at the first day of the 2021 World Championship and wonder what we can take away from it. How might the meta shift in the coming weeks?

The 2021 League of Legends World Championship kicked off and after the first few games of play-ins, we’ve already noticed a few curiosities about the meta which might shape the month-long event.

We’ve decided to take a glance at some wonders from the first few Worlds games to see if we can find a pattern there. Which picks were busts, and which were the most influential throughout the early stages of the World Championship?

Miss Fortune OP at Worlds 2021?

Miss Fortune was picked a total of 8 times on the first day of the 2021 World Championship. What does that mean? She has a 100% pick rate. It’s about time a team thinks to ban this champion, after she has been picked so often. Well, that only matters if she’s actually any good.

And she is. After day 1, Miss Fortune won 6 out of 8 games. So yeah, maybe teams at the 2021 World Championship should either think of a decent counter or just forfeit a ban.

Is Red Side Better than Blue Side?

After day 1 and 8 games, we saw that more teams on red side tended to win games. From 8 games, 5 teams on red side won. This goes to show that the counter pick is crucial. Or it could just mean that the teams on red side had a better day, nothing can be for sure yet.

Not enough data has been gathered – it’s only been 8 games! – but from what little we saw, we can say that being on red side with the counter pick in draft can be crucial. This could also just be due to these games being Bo1’s. Once we get into the Bo5’s, we will see which side is the better choice.

  • These champions have the highest win rates in LoL Patch 11.19 solo queue, so they might be crucial during Worlds!

Tryndamere Disappointed us on Day 1 of Worlds

Not even Chovy can make Tryndamere look awesome. Even though the best mid laner at the tournament was on the pick, he still had to rake in a loss. Sure, he managed to tank most incoming damage thanks to the ‘press 1 button and don’t die mechanic’ Tryndamere has, but it wasn’t enough.

After the first loss, we didn’t see anymore Tryndamere at the tournament – only raking in 1 ban later on – so does this mean that after 1 game, we won’t be seeing the Barbarian King anymore during the 2021 World Championship? Who knows.

Worlds Perkz is activated!

If anyone questioned C9 mid laner Luka "Perkz" Perković before the play-in stage, then he managed to shut up all the naysayers with his performance on day 1 of the 2021 World Championship.

He started off the tournament with a stellar performance against the LJL representative DetonatioN FocusMe. His Sylas was impeccable, going 8/0/2. He stole ultimates left and right, cementing himself as a threat and letting the world know that NA is here to play!
