A Chinese animated film made for reportedly just $200 has now earned more than $4 million.
A Chinese animated movie that was initially mocked online for its rough visuals has become one of the most unexpected box office stories of 2026. “Niu Lai”, which roughly translates to “The Cow Is Coming,” was reportedly made for just around $200.
“Niu Lai” Goes From Disaster To Box Office Hit
“Niu Lai” was released in China on August 5 and initially looked like a complete failure. The movie earned only around 7,705 yuan, less than $1,000, during its first few days in theaters. It was then discovered by social media users, who began sharing clips and making fun of its unusual animation and confusing story.
The movie follows a newborn calf as it travels through a surreal world and encounters various talking creatures. Its low-poly visuals and unconventional storytelling quickly became the main subject of online jokes, with some viewers even claiming the animation looked “worse than AI.”
Instead of killing the movie's chances at the box office, the criticism had the opposite effect. Curiosity grew, people started buying tickets to see the film for themselves, and Chinese cinemas began adding additional screenings. Some theaters even created their own posters after the movie went viral.
The $200 Movie Was Made By A Mother And Son
The story behind “Niu Lai” is almost as unusual as its success. The film was created by Xin Yumeng and his mother, Sun Lifang, who worked on the project for around five years. The pair handled much of the production themselves, including the animation, writing, voices, and music.
Reports differ on the exact production budget. Some sources put it at around 20,000 to 30,000 yuan, while other recent reports have cited a figure of only $200. Because of the conflicting estimates, the exact cost of the movie is difficult to establish with certainty.
What is clear is that the film was made on an extremely small budget compared with conventional animated features. It also had almost no traditional marketing before its unexpected rise to fame.
“Niu Lai” has now earned more than $4 million, according to recent reports, transforming it from an obscure animated movie into a genuine box office phenomenon.
