Casting rumors for the Harry Potter reboot are buzzing. Paapa Essiedu could play Snape, and Cillian Murphy is in talks for Voldemort. With 30,000 auditioning for the leads, Warner Bros. promises a fresh, diverse take on the Wizarding World.

The Harry Potter series has left an indelible mark on multiple generations, captivating hearts and minds in both literary and cinematic form.
At the center of this cultural phenomenon, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint brought their iconic characters to life, earning numerous audience and youth awards along the way.
The tale of young wizard Harry Potter and his friends navigating the enchanting, perilous world of Hogwarts, facing dark forces, enchanted forests, and the trials of growing up, has bewitched millions.
It’s no wonder Warner Bros. has commissioned a fresh adaptation as an HBO original series, slated to begin production in the summer of 2025.
A New Dumbledore
Though the highly anticipated series remains in its infancy, rumors about casting have already begun to swirl.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mark Rylance is being considered for the role of Albus Dumbledore, Hogwarts’ wise and legendary headmaster.
Rylance, a 64-year-old British actor, is celebrated for his subtle yet profoundly emotive performances.

His restrained body language and nuanced expressions have won acclaim in filmslike Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spiesfor which he won an Oscar for the best supporting Role, and Ready Player One.
These qualities make Rylance an intriguing choice to portray Dumbledore, a character renowned for his quiet authority, wisdom, and deep emotional complexity.
While Warner Bros., showrunner Francesca Gardiner, and director Mark Mylod have yet to confirm the casting, insiders suggest negotiations may soon commence, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter in the World of Wizards.
Adam Driver vs. Paapa Essiedu: The Debate Over Snape’s New Face
While the Harry Potter community, especially on Reddit, has passionately advocated for Adam Driver to take on the role of Severus Snape in the new HBO adaptation, it seems Warner Bros. is leaning in a different direction.

Despite Driver’s resemblance to Alan Rickman’s iconic portrayal, particularly from his breakout role in Disney’s Star Wars films, the producers have reportedly opted for a fresh and bold choice: British actor Paapa Essiedu.
“No one can replace Alan Rickman, but we can find the next generation,”
remarked Francesca Gardiner.
Essiedu, known for his roles in Men and the TV series The Lazarus Project, has demonstrated a remarkable range as an actor.
In his current film, The Outrun, he stars alongside Saoirse Ronan, playing a partner struggling to support a loved one spiraling into self-destruction.

This layered performance underscores his ability to bring depth and emotional complexity to his characters. Qualities essential for portraying Snape’s tortured brilliance and moral ambiguity.
While this potential casting hasn’t yet been confirmed, it already hints at Warner Bros.’ commitment to a diverse and innovative reimagining of the Harry Potter-World.
On X, the community is not yet happy with the cast. Some find the cast unsuitable:
Paapa Essiedu is one of the most talented actors of this generation but I hope to God he doesn't take on that role, character wise it doesn't match and he doesn't need to be subjected to relentless abuse.

Others advise him not to take on the role as he does not want to expose himself to the racist hatred of the sometimes intolerant Harry Potter community.
Paapa Essiedu is a great actor, but a Harry Potter TV series is beyond unnecessary, and it's just setting him up for familiar. Plus, *that* crowd of people have already started crying. https://t.co/NX0Pbm5yzd

Cillian Murphy as Voldemort? Ralph Fiennes Approves
In another wave of casting speculation, Ralph Fiennes, the original Voldemort, expressed his enthusiasm for the idea of Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy stepping into the role of the Dark Lord.
“Cillian is a fantastic actor. That’s a wonderful suggestion. I’d be all for Cillian, yes!”
Fiennes said during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live.
While there has been no official response to this suggestion, the idea has ignited heated discussions across social media platforms.
Cillian Murphy is doing well, no reason to join a doomed t.v. show.
