At the 2025 Wall Street Journal Innovator Awards, Billie Eilish used her moment in the spotlight to call for more empathy. And not only that, she also made sure her message reached some of the world’s wealthiest.

Moments after accepting her Music Innovator Award at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, Eilish thanked the crowd but quickly shifted gears, using her speech to shine a light on issues she said deserve more attention.

Among those in attendance was Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes Magazine at a staggering $228 billion.

Eilish Asks To Use Money For Good Things

The pop star didn’t shy away from addressing the state of the world, acknowledging just how turbulent things feel and how crucial it is that people show one another empathy and lend a helping hand whenever they can.

“We’re in a time right now where the world is really, really bad and really, really dark and people need empathy.” – Billie Eilish

Eilish then turned her message directly toward the wealthy, urging them to share their money with those in need.

“I’d say, if you have money, it’d be great to use it for good things and maybe give it to some people who need it.” – Billie Eilish

"Give Your Money Away, Shorties"

She went on to point out that the room was filled with people who had far more money than she did and didn’t hesitate to challenge them directly. Turning to the billionaires in attendance, Eilish questioned why anyone would hold onto that kind of wealth instead of putting it toward something good.

“Love you all, but there are a few people in here that have a lot more money than me. If you’re a billionaire… why are you a billionaire? No hate, but… yeah. Give your money away, Shorties.”

According to reports, Mark Zuckerberg did not join the rest of the audience who were applauding her statement.

Billie Eilish Puts Her Money Where Her Mouth Is

Billie Eilish isn’t just talking, but acting accordingly, too. The pop sensation has donated an impressive $11.5 million from the earnings of her 'Hit Me Hard and Soft' tour to organizations supporting food equity and environmental protection.

At just 23 years old, Eilish stood on stage and urged the world’s billionaires to show a little more humanity. It’s a move that takes not only conviction but also real courage.
