A YouTuber known for exposing crimes has been sentenced to seven years in prison for fraud and extortion.
A South Korean YouTuber known for creating content about crimes and helping alleged victims of illegal auto loans has been sentenced to seven years in prison. The 34-year-old, identified by Korean media by the surname Lim, was convicted of multiple fraud and extortion offenses by the Seoul Central District Court. He runs a YouTube channel with around 570,000 subscribers.
YouTuber Accused Of Using Damaged Cars To Secure Loans
According to prosecutors, Lim exploited loopholes in South Korea's used-car financing system to obtain loans using heavily damaged vehicles that had little or no actual value.
Some of the vehicles had previously been involved in accidents that were not reported to insurance companies. Because those accidents were not recorded, the vehicles could appear normal when their histories were checked. Lim allegedly recruited acquaintances to pose as buyers and obtain installment loans under their names. Between April and December 2023, prosecutors said the scheme generated around 3.06 billion won, or approximately $2.2 million in loans.
Lim was separately accused of obtaining another 1.63 billion won in August 2023. He allegedly claimed the money would be used to purchase expensive imported used cars and make a profit by reselling them. Investigators instead said the funds were intended for other purposes, including business expenses.
The court calculated the total damages from the fraud offenses at approximately 4.69 billion won, equivalent to around $3.4 million.
YouTuber Used His Platform To Extort A Business Partner
The case also involved allegations that Lim used his online influence to extort money from a business partner.
Prosecutors accused him of demanding around 620 million won across seven separate incidents. According to the court, Lim threatened to publish YouTube videos accusing the business partner of criminal activity unless he was paid.
The court rejected Lim's argument that he had played only a passive role in the fraud. Judges concluded that he had taken a leading role in initiating and carrying out the scheme and described his culpability as serious.
However, the court also considered several mitigating factors. Lim admitted to some of the offenses, expressed remorse, and had partially repaid victims. He had previously been released on bail in October 2025 while the case continued, but was taken back into custody after receiving his seven-year sentence.
His most recent YouTube video was uploaded on August 4, 2026, shortly before his sentencing. Fans have since left comments reacting to the news, with some expressing disbelief that the video could be his final upload for the foreseeable future.
