Famous Mexican-American actor Danny Trejo has recently found himself in hot water after taking on a lead role in Pawn Shop, an upcoming, pro-ICE action thriller co-produced by Ben Shapiro’s Daily Wire. The backlash has already grown so intense that protests actively halted the movie's production.

A Questionable Premise

After word got around that Trejo accepted the role, fans and critics alike were left scratching their heads: How does an iconic actor deeply rooted in the Chicano community end up starring in a project backed by one of America's most prominent right-wing pundits? On set, the 82-year-old actor reportedly shared that he was drawn to the script's positive depiction of a hard-nosed Latino veteran, seeing it as a rare chance to play the hero rather than his usual villain.

However, the trouble started long before post-production. Filming in Livingston, Montana, came to a sudden stop when local protestors disrupted the set, citing unannounced gunfire, dangerous stunts, and negative impacts on a local food bank. The controversy goes even deeper: one of the central scenes reportedly mirrors the real-life, fatal ICE shooting of civilian Renee Good in Minneapolis. The film’s official logline seems to back this up, teasing a high-stakes raid where a lone ICE officer is hunted by an "angry mob" after his partner is shot.

Pro-Immigrant Vs. Pro-ICE

Confronted with the mounting backlash, Trejo took to social media to clarify his stance: "Make no mistake. I am a proud Mexican [...] I am obviously pro-immigrant. I am not pro-ICE." He emphasized that he is simply an actor doing his job to tell a story. Behind the scenes, Trejo's son, Gilbert, defended his father, claiming the actor was completely misled by his agency about the film's political angle and didn't even know who Ben Shapiro was. Now, due to strict contracts, exiting the project is legally impossible.

Meanwhile, the creators are digging in. Daily Wire leadership blasted the local pushback in Montana, labeling the protests as content discrimination and a blatant First Amendment violation. While Trejo insists his heart is with his community, his legendary reputation has undeniably taken a hit.

What do you think? Should Danny Trejo have turned down the role, or is he just doing his job as an actor? Let us know in the comments below!
